I don't know if it matters, but on rebooting I was getting some error messages: error loading c:\WINDOWS\system32\usukkmyu.dll (couldn't be found). I also got some warnings that it was shutting IE down.

Anyways, thanks again!

Hello,

That error message is good! The files are being got, and they don't like it! This part should take care of those error messages.

Before beginning, you may want to save these instructions to Notepad or print them out for easier reference.

Please download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido) (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)

Load AVG Anti-Spyware and then click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Click the settings tab, then click "apply all actions" and choose clean (quarantine)
Close AVG. Do not run it yet.

We need to run VundoFix again, but a bit differently this time.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the entry below into the box

o C:\WINDOWS\system32\usukkmyu.dll

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.

Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode on the screen that appears.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0DFA0FEB-8941-4FB9-BF98-7343CD807CCF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxwwtu.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winrzf32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winrzf32.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Navigate to and delete the following files (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\v6.exe

1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Be sure to rehide them when you're done!

In Safe Mode, load AVG Anti-Spyware and click on the Scanner tab at the top and then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
AVG Anti-Spyware will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware will display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
Click on "Save Report", then "Save Report As". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Restart back into Normal Mode.

In your reply, please post the report from AVG and a new HijackThis log. Please also let me know how your computer is running. :)

Thanks,
tea

Hello Tea,

OK. I followed all your instructions. The only file that was there to delete manually was the v6.exe. However, in trying to delete it I must have accidently run it (or it was already running) and it wouldn't let me delete it. So I pulled up Windows Task Manager and stopped it -- I was then able to delete it. Hopefully it didn't do any damage if I did accidently run it.

Anyways, here is the AVG report:

I did not get an error message for the usukkmyu.dll file on rebooting this time, and so far my computer seems to be behaving. I'll keep my fingers crossed until I hear back from you.

Thanks again for all that you do -- it's very much appreciated!

Hello,

Good to hear it's behaving. :)

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [syswin] C:\WINDOWS\system32\v6.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winrzf32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winrzf32.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Delete the following files, if present :

C:\WINDOWS\system32\v6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winrzf32.dll

Reboot your computer.

Please download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please go Here to run Panda's ActiveScan. http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button

A new window will open...click the Check Now button.
Enter your State/Providence
Enter your E-mail address and click send.
Select either Home user or Company.

Click the big Scan Now button

* If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
* It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a few minutes)

When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.

When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save report and save it to a convenient location (activescan.txt to desktop).
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report, please, and a new HijackThis log.

Still behaving?

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

My computer will not let me delete c:\windows\system32\winrzf.dll

When I tried rebooting, it appeared again in the HijackThis log -- I fixed it again, but I still can't delete it out of the system32 folder. What next?

Thanks.

It wants to be a wise guy huh? We're tougher than it is. ;)

1) Please download the Killbox (http://www.killbox.net/downloads/KillBox.exe).
Save it to the desktop and run it.

2) Select "Delete on Reboot", and then select "All files".

3) Copy the file name below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winrzf32.dll

4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If it doesn't work in normal mode, do it again in safe mode. Let me know. :)

You nailed it! winrzf32.dll has been deleted. HijackThis had
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winrzf32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winrzf32.dl (file not found) so I fixed that and it hasn't come back after another reboot.

So I ran ATF Cleaner and that went fine.

While doing the Panda's Active scan, my PC-cillin gave me a pop up warning of suspected spyware:

Infected file: dumphive.exe
Name: Freeloader Smitfraud
Risk Level: High
Action taken: Detected

PC-cillin is asking me to either REMOVE, ALWAYS REMOVE, or ALWAYS IGNORE.

Did the active scan somehow trigger the SmitfraudFix (by S!ri) that I downloaded as instructed in the sticky message? --Or is this something else that I want to remove?

Anyway, here's the ActiveScan report:

Incident Status Location

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/PocketKillBox Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\name\Desktop\KillBox.exe
Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\name\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\Process.exe

Infected file: dumphive.exe The file is part of SmitfraudFix. Some AV companies flag this file, and as you saw in Panda, Process.exe. You can delete SmitfraudFix, VundoFix, and Killbox. :)

Everything looks great. :bigthumb:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html).

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html).

SpywareGuard (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html)
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial50.html).

A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial43.html). Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm)

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!

Thank you for all your help!

I removed the programs as you instructed, but what about the AVG Anti-Spyware? Won't this conflict with my PC-cillin -- or is it OK to have both running?

Also, I just recently had another popup warning about a possible spyware file trying to restore or something (was located in C:\System Volume Information\........)

Infected file: A0100968.exe
Name: Freeloader Smitfraud
Risk Level: High
Action taken: Detected

I'm assuming that this is also from the SmitfraudFix program as well? I instructed PC-cillin to REMOVE and it was then Quarantined. Please let me know if this is OK or if it's something to worry about.

After rebooting, I received another similar popup warning for a possible spyware program (C:\System Volume Information\_restore{AE236820-30AE-4526-96C6-E6A8760B1555}\RP954\A0100978.exe)

Infected file: A0100978.exe
Name: RAP Generic
Risk Level: High
Action taken: Detected

I also quarantined this file. I'm wondering if this is because I deleted SmitfraudFix from my desktop rather than an unistall using Add or Remove Programs (wasn't available). These two files are probably just from the SmitfraudFix, but I'd feel better if I heard it from someone who knows better!

Thanks.

Hello,

but what about the AVG Anti-Spyware? Won't this conflict with my PC-cillin -- or is it OK to have both running? No it won't, they should be all right with each other. You run into problems when you run realtime protection with multiple AVs and Firewalls. :)

I'm wondering if this is because I deleted SmitfraudFix from my desktop rather than an unistall using Add or Remove Programs No, you did right. I would have told you if you needed to uninstall those things. ;) There is a big difference. Let's see if this fixes the problem :

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Let me know. :)

Regards,
tea
