Hello John and welcome back to the forum. I need more information that you are providing, describe in more detail exactly why you are posting. Are you receiving any error messages? If so post them "word for word".

You are running MSConfig in Selective Startup Mode, please return it to Normal Mode for the duration of our work, you can return to Selective Startup to save your resources when we are done. Post all HJT log in Normal Mode unless I request otherwise.

Follow the instructions in this link:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html

I would also like a look at your uninstall list, like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Follow the instruction in this link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, make sure you delete or at least quarantine what it finds and save the scan report to post.
When you get the program ready to run, pleasego offline and follow these instructions before you run AVG so it won't conflict.
Please follow these instructions before you run this program:
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

When the above instructions are complete, post the scan results from AVG anti-Spyware, the uninstall list and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help.

Thanks

I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.91GHz XP2600+ w/512MB RAM

My hard drive is about 60% free and doesn't show needing defrag.

I have no error messages, just very slow in any application, even drags when I mouse over something, almost total lockup.

I set my msconfig back to a normal startup.

I'm kind of fearing a RAM problem or a HD failure... I hope I'm wrong. I think I'll run a memtest while you're looking over this info.

Here is my AVGAS scan result:

Thanks for returning your information and it is not showing a whole lot.
Uninstall List:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 9
Uninstall those old versions, hackers can exploit those to infect you.

You may want to look over the list to see if anything there is no longer needed, but if you are 60% free they should not be causing the problem.

Since AVG Anti-Spyware found nothing but the one item in System Restore, you may uninstall it if you wish (unless you want to turn it off and keep the free, updateable scanner, your call) and you may return to Selective Startup, nothing showing in the HJT log.
I believe you said you cleaned that one item from System Restore, if you did not you can use this information to get that adware out of your files.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

I don't think it's the case, but let's rule out hidden Smitfraud infection, a couple of items in the Pandascan look suspicious.
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download and run ONLY
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
(Make sure you read the part about process.exe so your AV does not block that.

Since you have this tool onboard: Kaspersky Online Scanner please run a scan and post the results.

I believe we could benefit from a diagnostic report here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/
If you have questions about the results, you can post and get help here:
http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=6
TechExpress - Step by Step Instructions
http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp
Please post a link to the test resluts for me to view, I may spot something.

I fear there is a good chance this is not malware related, but we should still rule it out. I would also like to test for a rootkit infection, but will wait, looks like your plate is full and the information may tell us what we want to know.

Restart, post the link to the diagnostic, the C:\Report.txt from Smitfraudfix, the scan results from Kaspersky and any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

Okay I did as you said except for the pcpitstop. I couldn't navigate it and find a diagnostic tool that wasn't trying to sell me something, so I didn't get anything for you there.

I did run Kaspersky and Smitfraud. Here are the results. I didn't fix anything with Kaspersky... I figured I'd get your advice first.

Smitfraud:

I don't know if that link will work for you. I'll try it once I post and if it doesn't then I'll copy and paste.

I have been running a memtest that says I have one error, but it's not the old memtest that I remember using in the past. I think this memtest site is trying to get me to buy the deluxe ver. of their software. Any reccomendations on where to go for a good memtest?

I ran it once, had tons of viruses, found out it was just my nortons quarantine file, so I deleted all of my quarantined items and ran a scan on just the critical areas of my computer and heres the results:

I couldn't navigate it and find a diagnostic tool that wasn't trying to sell me somethingThey give the test away, I believe it is hard to find anything free anymore where you don't have a few adds somewhere, but there is no requirement to purchase anything, I send folks there for the test all of the time. You don't even have to register to run the tests, however without registration (which is free) they can't keep records for you so the ability to copy a link I can see would not be available. You would still be able to view the report for your own information. This link shows how to run the tests: http://www.pcpitstop.com/ <<< diagnostic test
http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress/howto1.asp <<< Step by Step Instructions

Any reccomendations on where to go for a good memtest?Off the top of my head I can remember if memory is part of the Tech Express diagnostics.

Kaspersky says you are clean of malware in these areas:
Scan Target - Critical Areas:
C:\WINDOWS
C:\DOCUME~1\JOHNWH~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\

I would have scanned the complete system, I would also clean out those temp files, try this:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925
It's a nice free clean, easy to use and small in size, just read the tutorial.

Thanks

I figured out the pcpitstop. You should be able to hit this link.
http://pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/Summary.asp

I will also run Kaspersky again after I finish running some hard drive tests. This sure seems to be a hardware issue, but I want to make sure and get it right so I'm not throwing away my money. I'll let you know if I come up with anything else out of place. I really appreciate your dilligence.

Nope...that just take me to where you start testing, click on it and see. The link I would need has the numbers at the end that were assigned to the test results, you could view them...correct? If you have questions, just register free and ask those folks, not much about the test results they won't know.

Phil,

I'll try and do that. I wasn't sure if you could link to that or not, even though I could. I guess just because it knew it was me looking at it. I'll run it again now that I know how and have them analyze it. I think I'm doing better though. After all that we've done, and then I ran a complete error-check w/auto fix on my HD and it seems much better. Not 100% yet, but it is getting better. Thanks again for all your help. If I find anything crazy about my problem, I'll let you know, otherwise I think we're done here.

Hummm...that is strange as I have folks post their test results all of the time, I also help at the HJT forum there. Those tests are fairly detailed, but you have to do some clicking to see all of the information. Especially dig into an red flag, the yellow are important also though. Once you resolve the issues pointed out, you can scan again to see the improvement.
Let's do this in case any malware has gotten in your System Restore files:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam
