Brian Kim

Alright, so for maybe the past week, Norton 2007 has been catching a lot of viruses. I get continuous pop ups as well, even when I'm just on the desktop with no items open. Norton has probably detected and deleted 35+ viruses and trojans, but Norton can't find EVERYTHING.. So, I've decided to turn to the professionals. :fear:

------------

The one virus that I usually find is 'Downloader', but I've recently stopped finding that. I found some other 'High' leveled trojans, and I have also found other processes such as Notedad.exe. Theres other stuff also, such as the Winfixer products and other stuff.

Please help me, you guys are my only hope.. I can't even browse the Internet in peace!

Welcome to the forum, you are infected, you are probably right about the Vundo infection and I see this:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IESet] IExplorer.dll .dbt which is probably this:

Looks like you missed this information: "BEFORE you POST"
Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Post Reply button.

Thanks

Alright, I installed SP1a I think. I don't understand what you mean in the first paragraph; I've already read and gone through those steps. :fear:

Please do not quote my instructions, I can scroll back to see them if I need to, it's a waste of space.

The "BEFORE you POST" instructions specifies a online antivirus scan with the results posted, since I did not see that I have to assume you did not see it.

You have not updated your version of Windows. I posted a link where you can do that ih my last post, and the instruction to have it done were also in the "Before you Post" instructions:

You have no Service Pack and no critical updates for your browser, when you have done that, post a new HJT log.

Please follow the directions carefully and in the posted order.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

2) This looks to be your Vundo infection, showing you so you know what the file looks lie, it can be tough to remove:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9849ba25-4b72-4d43-a1cb-74b7a6ae911a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mstext - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext.dll

Understand that Vundofix can't update as fast as hackers rename their junk. It may not know the file at first but will learn. You need to watch the report and move on when all Vundo files "has been deleted"

3) Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

My computer seems faster now, but I see something continuously happening. In your previous post, you told me to scan with HJT and then check the files and fix them. When I look at my log, they reappear on my log. Is this normal?

My Vundo log:

Hello Brian, let's chat a moment. Understand you and I want the junk off the computer but the hacker want it to stay on. That's how they make $$, by infecting your computer. See this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html This is a tough infection to remove as I said before.

You removed a lot of the junk, first thing I want to know is there any possibility that it is a valid program:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9849ba25-4b72-4d43-a1cb-74b7a6ae911a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mstext - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext.dll
The clsid list I use is this one: http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html
which is the most accurate available and it does not identify the clsid number. A google of the file: mstext.dll does however return this:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mstext.dll&btnG=Search
So even though I believe it is Vundo, I am not 100% positive. What I would like you to do is enable all hidden files and folders:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Then use one or more of these free online scans to make sure the file is bad:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Post that information for me to view.

Next...if this is Vundo, we have at least two issues.
VundoFix V6.3.17
Checking Java version...
Sun Java not detected <<< I believe Vundofix needs Java to run.
You may not have run the fix long enough for it to do the job, I have seen it take 6 or more times to locate and delete the junk.
We will tackle those issues once I see what the online scans have to say.

I would like to see your uninstall list, like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

I suggest you keep the computer offline as much as possible until we revolve all issues, post ONLY the information I requested about the files, the uninstall list and any comment you think will help.

Thanks

Brian Kim

Brian, I apologize, the notifications system that is supposed to notify me when you post seems to have failed as I did not get notified on 2/24 when you posted and you did exactly the right thing by making me aware.

We seem to have a slight communication issue, I need you to use one or more of these free scans to post information about this file for me:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll these are the free online scanners: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Post that information for me to view.

For instance, if you choose the first one, click to open the webpage and you will see near the top "File to upload & scan" a white box where the file will be entered and the "Browse" button. Browse to that file (remember you will not probably see it if all files and folders are not enabled) I posted that link in the last instructions. Once you have that file in the white box, then click Submit. The file will be scanned and information returned to you. Post that information for me. All three scanners work basically the same.

I see the Java program: Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_13
but this is a very old vertion and unsafe. see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

Start > Control Panel > Java console (looks like a little coffee cup) Once the console is open choose the update tab then check for updates or update, whatever is there on this old version. Once you have the newest version of Java, return to Add Remove programs and uninstall that old version.
You do not have to show me the uninstall list again, I will see the version when you next run Vundofix.

Once you have scanned the file and received information that it is indeed malware, then return to the instructions for running Vundofix. Read and follow the directions carefully. Post the report and a new HJT log.

Since notifications failed once if you post and do not hear from me within around four hours (except at night I am EST) PM me again.

Thanks...Phil

Thanks for replying.

I have removed the old Java and installed JRE 6.
I scanned using VundoFix, but I found nothing.
I scanned mstext.dll, and it is indeed malware.

Before we start anything, I am not convinced that is a bad file, it may be the hackers are using a valid name to confuse us. Please use the other two scanners and post those results.
See the Google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mstext.dll&btnG=Search
I would also like you to navigate to that file and point your mouse, then right click and choose properties. Post all of the information available under all tabs.

I would also like to know IF you followed these direction:

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.comIf the file was submitted as instructed, Atribune may have already added it to the fix.

So you will be aware, this item:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9849ba25-4b72-4d43-a1cb-74b7a6ae911a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll
Does not scan on the CC list: http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html
O20 AppInit_DLLs and Winlogon Notify list: http://www.castlecops.com/O20.html

It is very likely it is just a version of vundo the fix does not have, which is the reason for uploading that file. I am also interested in knowing, since I see nothing in the HJT log but that item, what malware symptoms you are experiencing.

Thanks

Brian Kim

I have just now uploaded mstext.dll. Sorry for not doing it earlier :red:

Lately these days, I receive little or no pop ups. If I do receive pop ups, it is when I am using IE and one usually comes up every 2~4 hours. I have not received one lately, mainly because I use Firefox. My computer runs at average speed. I never really detect anything wrong with my computer, but I sometimes question the processes running.

Also, here is the tab information you wanted for mstext.dll:
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9338/mstexttu6.png

There was only one tab named 'General'

Thanks for that information, would you look at that date and see if you remember installing a new program:
Friday, March 16, 2007, 7:17:27 PM. I am concerned it may be valid but I have no idea what program may be using it. Let's see if we can find out here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic9211.html click this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php and submit it the same as you did in the online scans. Please post that we are unsure if it is bad, and that you would appreciate the information.
You may have the information sent to you if you wish, but I would like it also. You may mention my name:
Phil Skelley and email address: pskelley at msn.com please change the at to @ to keep the spambots away.
Make sure you place the link at Safer Networking:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=12329

As far as popups, are you running a good blocker like: http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_xp.html
If you should use that one, I strongly suggest you download JUST to basic toolbar, they will try to get you to download a lot of resourse using eye candy that is not need to block popups.

Since it may take a few to get that information, lets try to get some information to you.

Help! My computer is slow!

How to prevent Malware
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

I am concerned because you do have new malware showing in your HJT log that WAS NOT in the last log? Means you are getting more infections. I will post links from experts to help you stop this.

Make sure all files and folder are enabled:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(unless you know what this is, Google does not. You can scan it before you remove it if you wish)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\urstus.dll",setvm
(unless you know the next item, remove it)
O4 - Global Startup: Real-time Monitor.lnk = ?
(remove also unless you are 100% positive it is safe)
O16 - DPF: {CD995117-98E5-4169-9920-6C12D4C0B548} (HGPlugin9USA Class) - http://gamedownload.ijjimax.com/game...Plugin9USA.cab

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\urstus.dll <<< delete that file

Run ATF Cleaner (no need to delete passwords in Firefox if you use them)
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Post a new HJT log.

You can check your running processes here:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/processexplorer.html

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

Understand that your copy of Windows is not secure and will not be secure until you install SP2 and get the new Critical Updates it will bring. Just as soon as we are sure your computer is clean of malware you must do this.

Thanks

I don't really remember installing a program then. Also, I checked most of the things I downloaded, and none of them had that date. I'll keep on searching and get back to you if I find something.

I could not find a 'urstus.dll'. Norton found a Trojan Horse a bit earlier before I tried searching for urstus.dll, so I think Norton may have removed it.

Thanks for the feedback, whatever that was is gone, I would be concerned by how it got there were I you. Look over the expert advice and tightenup your security. I would like to tell you to download SP2, but it is best that we find out what this is first:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9849ba25-4b72-4d43-a1cb-74b7a6ae911a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mstext - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext.dll

The one exception would be since you say you never installed it...for you to ask me to show you how to remove it. Until SP2 is installed you need to be super careful online.

Keep me posted.

Is there a way to remove/clean the mstext.dll? The scans said it was infected, so I'm kind of worried with it being on my computer

Have you heard from BleepingComputer yet? If you don't want to wait, we will try this method first and see what happens:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/content.aspx?q=64463

UnRegister DLLs

To unregister mstext's mstext.dll:

1. Click the Start button, and select Run
2. Enter this command line:

(copy and paste it to get it exact)

regsvr32 /u [systemroot]\mstext.dll

Then hit OK. Now let's do this.

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.

There were some errors when I tried your first instructions.

When I typed in:
regsvr32 /u [systemroot]\mstext.dll

I received this error:
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/2376/failmb9.png

I looked at the link you gave me, and it gave another way to do it. I think you might have possibly made a mistake in the [systemroot] area?

I edited the line, and instead I tried:
regsvr32 /u c:\WINDOWS\system32\mstext.dll

I received this error:
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/4426/fail2gs8.png

---------------------------------------------
*Oh, I found something out also. The line you keep telling me to fix:
O16 - DPF: {CD995117-98E5-4169-9920-6C12D4C0B548} (HGPlugin9USA Class) - http://gamedownload.ijjimax.com/game...Plugin9USA.cab

I found out that I get this when I play a game that I downloaded from ijji.com (From my understanding, ijji.com is safe.. I've been using it for more than a year now)

Of course, I could just solve this by using HJT and constantly removing this after I finish playing, but do I have to keep deleting it?

Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, in reference to the ActiveX item, anytime you remove one of them, you will be prompted to put it back the next time you visit the site. I could not get a reading on it but if you know it is safe, leave it there.

Looks like this item: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mstext.dll is going to be hard to remove, have you heard from BleepingComputer? What happened when you tried the Delete on Reboot tool? Please post a new HJT log so I can look before I try another method. If you have any ideas on your end, by all means try them out.

Thanks

OK, looks like you killed that one, but you have picked up another new infection. Where are you taking this computer to get this stuff. Look here: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57E218E6-5A80-4f0c-AB25-83598F25D7E9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tmp6F.tmp.dll
http://www.castlecops.com/CLSID.html

(no name) {57E218E6-5A80-4f0c-AB25-83598F25D7E9} X BHO tmp*.tmp.dll, [random filename] VirtuMonde/Vundo adware related and detected by DrWeb antivirus as Trojan.Juan

Follow these instructions:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57E218E6-5A80-4f0c-AB25-83598F25D7E9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tmp6F.tmp.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Run ATF Cleaner (no need to delete passwords in Firefox if you use them, but make sure you check all the rest, especially "Prefetch"
tutorial >> http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Make sure your antivirus program is updated and run a complete system scan and tell me what the results are.

Thanks

It's very strange, actually. I don't go to porn or weird sites, so I don't really know how I'm getting the viruses. For the past 3 weeks, I've only been going to 4-5 sites only (I am assured that they are safe)

I think I receive viruses when I use IE, but I'm not sure.

I understand, it is not hard to get infected anymore. All you have to do is pass your mouse over a banner at a bad site and you have a Vundo infection. Here is a little recent information about Vundo:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2007/03/27/715954.aspx
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html

I suggest you download Service Pack#2 and update to the Internet Explorer 7That will give you the best possible protection and that is what we need with the aggressive efforts to infect folks that are going on now. Once you have SP2 installed, then open the Security Center in the Control Panel and make sure all three areas are green.
If you have any problems downloading the service pack you can get help here: http://support.microsoft.com/
Need more help?
Contact a support professional by e-mail, online chat, or telephone.

Before I turn you loose, I need to show you this information:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206
"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

It looks very much like you are running two antivirus programs and if that is the case, you want to uninstall one of those. You want one antivirus program, one firewall and at least one realtime spyware program. The information in the links from experts will tell you this again.
Trend NT Realtime Service (Tmntsrv) - Trend Micro Inc. - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2000\Tmntsrv.exe
Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\isPwdSvc.exe

I would look back over your topic and save the links that apply so you will have them to refer to in the future.

Mostly everything runs smoothly. The computer kind of goes slow, but I think it's because I downloaded SP2 which took up some space and also because Norton lags a lot. No pop ups yet. :)
