View Full Version : I'm Infected by System Alert Popup and others - Please help!
Hi,
I've followed all the advice in "Before you Post", including running S&D and AD-Aware in Safemode with cleaning action, but still getting these bugs on my machine :spider: . Have read other threads where you have helped follow victums and was tempted to try running some of these, but decided to ask the experts for help.
Here's my Panda Log:

Welcome to the forum, you have a dialer onboard, I would keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting until you are clean.
O16 - DPF: {5FD9726A-4977-449D-8352-25FDD8A510B5} - http://scripts.dlv4.com/binaries/ega...1067_em_XP.cab
X 5FD9726A-4977-449D-8352-25FDD8A510B5 egaccess4_1067_XP.cab Added by InstantAccess_EGDAccess an adware application that usually contains dialer functionality.
It also looks like you have a rootkit infection, we need to do this first.
Follow the directions in this link, then post the logs suggested using "Post Reply" to stay in the same topic.

Thanks for returning the information, let's have a look for Adware/NaviPromo
Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml
Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created
The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).
Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.
Don't try to fix anything yet, most if not all will be valid.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\W <<< this item has me a little confused, like the name of the file is cut off? It may be valid, take a look on the C:\ See if you can figure out what that is. It starts off like a valid entry?
it may be this: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/scanregw/ which can be good or bad as you can see. If you have to, use this scanner and scan the file, then post the results:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] C:\WINDOWS\system32\prosvsys.exe /res

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\prosvsys.exe <<< delete that file
Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Post the results of the BlackLight scan, the information about the file that is cut off, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

Have in the meantime updated Jave RTE to vers 6 and removed all previous vers.
Also have installed SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster
I still see in Add/Remove Pgms an entry for "System Alert Popup". Should this be there? Last time I tried to remove it caused spydawn to download.
Thanks again for your help so far :bigthumb:

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. BlackLight was clean, so unless this is a well hidden rootkit, that is not an issue.
Can you assure me this is a valid item: C:\WINDOWS\VdCap03C\StillMnt.exe If you do not know, use one or more of these free online scans to find out:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Is this a work computer? What can you tell me about this proxy?

Smitfraudfix is updated often and the item you mention "SpyDawn" has been removed for a while. It is possible a new item has been added to the fix. Please delete all of version v2.151 and download
SmitFraudFix v2.152 from here: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php Run only Search:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Please show me your uninstall list:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Turn off TeaTimer it may block our fix. I also suggest strongly that since you are running SpywareGuard, which does the same thing, you leave TeaTimer disabled at that point.
Turn off SpywareGuard, right click and exit. It will be put back on a reboot.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ScanRegistry] C:\W
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Restart the computer and post the uninstall list, C:\Report.txt from Smitfraudfix, the information I requested and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help, how is the computer running.
These are files from the first scan, please make sure they are gone:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MPGQFS.EXE <<< delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PROCIA.EXE <<< delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\egaccess4_1066.dll <<< delete the file if there
(delete the contests of the Temp folder (not the folder)C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Local Settings\Temp\temp.frA4A6\ISADD.DLL
C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Local Settings\Temp\temp.frA4A6\PMSNRR.EXE
C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Local Settings\Temp\avA5.exe[SpyDawn.exe]
C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Local Settings\Temp\lafA4.tmp
(make sure that cookies folder is empty also)
C:\Documents and Settings\Tony\Cookies\tony@outster[2].txt
Thanks...Phil
For your information, I have run SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard, along with Spybot (TeaTimer disabled) on several computer for years with great success. Even the places I go when researching these logs, I rarely have to remove an infection. I also run IE-Spyad that you will read about later. For your benefit, here are good tutorials for those programs:

Hi pskelley,
C:\WINDOWS\VdCap03C\StillMnt.exe Is clear - run through all checkers.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = arcptpa001.bp.com:80
Not sure why this was set. This is not a work computer. It's my home PC. Perhaps this was inherited when I had DSL installed. One of the IT guys setup my router for me. Anyhow, I have removed the proxy setting.

PC seems to be running ok - at least the pesky popups are gone ...... just takes very long to boot. Have read about running Registry cleanup apps which might speed this up by cleaning out unnecessary entries. Not sure if this is a safe thing though??
Thanks again Phil.......Gavin

Thanks Gavin for returning the information and your feedback, we will attempt to clear up these issues one by one.
StillMnt.exe <<< probably has to do with this: VideoCAM Slim USB2
Smitfraudfix is clean, you may delete that tool, and any other tools we used during the cleanup. The exception is ATF-Cleaner. You may keep that nice small tool. You may have an interest in this information:

uninstall list: I am looking for security issues and malware, I will not know all of the programs. I will caution you to use care when downloading "free screensavers" and I will post this link in case you have not seen it which is probably the major reason for the Smitfraud infections:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=7344
System Alert Popup <<< that needs to go, review this information to see if it helps you get rid of it.

Yahoo! Internet Mail <<< I can not see the item in the HJT log, but it may be coming from this:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
I am not a Yahoo fan, I consider them part of the enemy, I can only suggest you search and locate the yahoo junk (probably in C:\Program Files\ ) and delete it. If you delete all of their junk, even if the item is still in the uninstall list, it will not be on the computer.
This may be what happened with the System Alert Popup, if it is deleted before you try to uninstall, the uninstaller will not be there to remove it.
Besides that your HJT log looks fine.
In this case, it is VERY unlikely those folders are not there, you may have to enable hidden files and folder to see them:

The information in this link should help with the speed issues:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Let me know how things are running once you get to this point.
