Welcome to the forum, just to be sure of a few issues:

1) You have read and followed all of these directions and understand them.
"BEFORE you POST"
Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

2) You said:
I have followed the steps in this thread: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=4015 but I am still infected.
I see no C:\report.txt from Smitfraudfix?

Copy/paste into your own new topic.
c:\rapport.txt
The HJT log

It is very important that all directions are followed exactly. Since you believe you had a Smitfraud infection, I need to rule that out first. Please delete any of the Smitfraudfix you have on the computer, then download it new from here:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php Then follow ONLY these directions:

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

3) Post an uninstall list like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

4) Please provide more information, if you are receiving popups, how often is this occuring, does it happen online as well as offline and where exactly are the popups directing you to.
I am also interested in any error messages you are receiving, post those "word for word".

Post the information I requested, the uninstall list and the C:\report.txt from Smitfraudfix.

Thanks

slarin

The popups come in very often. They will mostly pop when I'm opening a new tab or just after opening a browser, but they will also pup when I'm typing (like now) or at some regular interval if I leave the compter unattended. They show up in a new window, not in a tab and they often come with a messagebox style warning that my computer is at risk.

The messages says things like:

"Your computer might be at risk.
Windows Security Alert
Your system is highly infected.
840 dangerous files have been detected on your PC!
Remove them now? ok Cancel"
The page title is "Spyware secure"

Another popup have the title "SystemDoctor 2006" and it have a button "Click here to Scan!". This one come out very often. A printscreen can be found here: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/slarin1/Popups/untitled.jpg

Thanks for returning your information, please review the "Before you Post" instructions again:

Please do not attach infected files!
If a helper requests files they will give you a link to upload them.
All logs should be copy/pasted into topic and not attached unless requested by helper in that format.
(When adding posts to your topic, do so by clicking ADD REPLY)
Please don't post a gif/jpeg picture to show the problem, they are not needed and also hard on anyone who uses dialup. The logs will suffice.
Thank you for your understanding.
If you will take the time to read and follow the directions, everything will run much smoother...thanks.

The Smitfraudfix report is clean.

Though I can't be sure until we investigate, this is probably a hidden Vundo infection, please read this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
You will understand this more next.

Uninstall list:
Hijackthis 1.99.1
HijackThis 1.99.1 <<< check this, if it is installed twice, uninstall one of those.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Start > Control Panel > Java Console > Update to the newest version which I think is 6.0, then uninstall all old versions. If you are told you are un to date, then install all but the newest version.

Logitech Desktop Messenger <<< installed usually because the eula is not read when another Logitech product is installed. If you do not use it, I suggest you uninstall it, a resource waster. (optional)

Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.1)
Mozilla Thunderbird (1.0.7) <<< both Mozilla versions are out of date and security risks. If you are going to use them, keep them updated or uninstall them.

You have a load of stuff installed, my advice would be to take a look and uninstall stuff you no longer use.

Please do this: C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe to say slarin.exe or whatever you wish, a reboot should show us Vundo if present.

Let's run a Blacklight scan also in case it is a rootkit which is hidden, like this:
Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.
Do not fix anything most if not all will be valid

After a restart, post the log from Blacklight, a new HJT log and any comment you think will help.

Thanks

slarin

I've uninstalled the extra copy of HijackThis, all the Java Runtime and installed the version 6, uninstalled Logitech Desktop Messenger, installed the latest version of FireFox, uninstalled Thunderbird and did a cleanup of my applications.

I've renamed HijackThis.EXE to slarin.exe and did reboot the computer. I did a scan with BackLight and here is the report:

Thanks for returning your information and good work:bigthumb: BlackLight has exposed the rootkit infection so we can see it.
It appears there is no Vundo infection and that is a good thing, you may rename HJT if you wish. Follow the instructions in the numbered order.

1) Please take the time to review this tutorial so you will know what you are doing when you clean the rootkit:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial124.html these are the bad files:

03/23/07 20:22:34 [Info]: Hidden process: C:\windows\system32\binfovpqem.exe
03/23/07 20:32:33 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\binfovpqem.dat
03/23/07 20:32:33 [Info]: Hidden file: C:\windows\system32\binfovpqem.exe
03/23/07 20:32:33 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\binfovpqem_nav.dat
03/23/07 20:32:34 [Info]: Hidden file: c:\WINDOWS\system32\binfovpqem_navps.dat

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

4) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

5) TeaTimer will block the changes we must make, follow the instructions in this link to turn it off until you are done:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Use the instructions in this link to run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware, delete or at least quarantine anything found and scan the scan report to post:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

8) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware, a new HJT log to check and any comments you think will help.

Thanks

Rootkit eliminated by BlackLight. Thanks a lot! :bigthumb:

Items deleted in HijackThis. Did a complete scan with AVG Anti-Spyware, but it didn't create a report even if I did select the options to create it every time a scan was run or it deleted it after the cleanup. ATF Cleaner was run.

Here is the latest report from HJT:

OK and great job with that rootkit:bigthumb: just one more line in the HJT log to remove. Let's do this:
You may have to disable the spyware programs again, you can try first without it.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: c:\windows\system32\binfovpqem.exe binfovpqem

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

c:\windows\system32\binfovpqem.exe <<< delete that file(make sure all files and folders are enabled or you may not see it:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html )

That should take care of your malware, I am not sure how the computer is running, but you have a load of stuff starting everytime. Look at this information:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, [B]reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
