Spybot shut down

I have an XP machine (with the latest updates) that has a problem I cannot get rid of. It actually shuts down Spybot 1.4 when trying to do a scan. it will update, but when I scan, something just shuts Spybot down completely. I also have current McAffee virus protection, which when booting up seems recognize a problem, but a scan finds no issues (other than the ton of cookies from the hundreds of incessant popups that this virus/malware/adware creates...) I even get popups running in safe mode, and a system restore to the earliest point I had yielded no benefits. any suggestions?

Post the Hijackthis log in that section of our forums.
Someone will then take a look at the system and advise you.
