Like many others, I've had Norton tell me my computer is infected with the Trojan virus xlibgfl254.dll. During startup, I get repeat error windows from various applications stating "The application or DLL C:\Windows\System32\xlibgfl254.dll is not a valid windows image."

I've followed the "Before you post a log" instructions, and the HJT and Panda logs follow.

Welcome to the forum, if you have not accepted help elsewhere, this one is nasty because you can't see it. Depending on what junk it's bundled with is how difficult it is to remove manually. Prevx has added it to their detections:

Before I proceed, I want to point out that your Java program is badly outdated and a real security risk, see this:

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\ <<< out of date, download the newest version and uninstall all old version in Add Remove programs. If Vundo has infected you, you will know it. It is a prolific popup maker directing you to rouge spyware products.

Then do this: Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Follow the directions and stick with the free version.

2) Removal Instructions
To Remove a Current Infection, follow the following simple instructions:
1. Download and install Prevx1
2. Next Activate Prevx1 by clicking the Free Activation button or entering a license key which you can buy here.
3. Let Prevx1 scan your system and running processes. If an infection is found Prevx1 will show you the steps it will take to clean up your system.
4. Click the Clean Up option and let it run to completion. This may require a restart of your PC depending on the strength of the infection.

3) Choose Open, then install, allow the BHO
4) Start Trial, then follow the instruction to restart the computer.

follow all instructions. If it does ot open and start, click on the Desktop icon to start it.
6) System Health Check
Your computer is now being scanned for any signs of previous infections by malicious software including Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Adware and Spyware.
If any infections are found, they will be placed in the Prevx1 Jail for you to review later.
After the System Health Check has completed, Cleanup will automatically start.
Scan will take a while. It is best to leave it alone, you can do other things but it is best not to.
My computer scanned for about 45 minutes and was malware free. At that point they would be informated how to remove any malware found I assume.

Save the report, or write down and post what it removed along with a new HJT log and your comments. We will remove other junk at that point.

I downloaded and installed Prevx1. It automatically ran a Smart Scan, but did not find any malware. It did not do a "System Health Check" (see Item 6 in your e-mail), nor could I find an option to run a check by that name. I did run a File Scan, which resulted in:

I rebooted after running this scan, and upon start-up, am still getting the ".......xlibgfl254.dll is not a valid windows image." pop-up windows.

Thanks for returning your information. I am sure you read where Previx said they would remove it. I have used them before for some tough infections with varied success. Since Prevx uses a bunch of resources and is doing us no good, I would like you to uninstall the program.

Your HJT log does not show that trojan, just a little trash and the MyWaySearch junk, let's see if we can locate the worm.

1) Use these instruction to enable all files and Folders for your Operating System: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Now use Search Companion and search for that file and post the location/s for me.
Start > Search > All Files and Folders > xlibgfl254.dll. We know it shows C:\Windows\System32\ if there are other locations post them for me. Be patient, sometimes it takes a while for search to locate all locations of a file.

2) Let's see if a rootkit infection is involved that would put the .dll back if we manually delete it, follow these instructions:

3) I am used to a lot of malware in the HJT log and not seeing it with this one. I am also interested in any other symptoms beside what you mentioned to start. Do you receive any other error messages? If so post them word for word.

4) On an outside chance a Vundo infection is also involved, please rename HijackThis.exe. You can call it Machspeed.exe or what ever you wish.

Restart the computer and post the results of the BlackLight scan, the search results from Search Companion, any information I requested and any comments you think will help.

pskelley - Before I get through my summary of your requested actions, when I booted up this morning I had multiple warnings of various components of Norton antivirus and autoprotect not working. I worked a long time trying to get them re-started, including Symantec troubleshooting utilities, all unsuccessful. I decided to then start working through your requested actions. When I uninstalled PREVX and rebooted, all of the Norton functions were again working.

Per your request, Prevx has been uninstalled.

Per your request, I've uninstalled "My Search Assistant" and "Viewpoint Media Player." FYI - I've also uninstalled a few other unused programs, including Wingman, RAF Screen Saver, S800 (old printer).

Hijackthis has been renamed.

All Files and Folders in the operating system wre enabled and the search companion only found one location for the xlibg254.dll file, located in C:\Windows\System32.

I downloaded and ran F-Secure Blacklight Beta. When the scan was complete, the report had:

Other than the previously discussed Norton problems, which have now gone away, I haven't had any other software problems. I'm not certain if there could be any correlation, but I had a DVD burner fail and last week Dell had their tech support install a replacement. The computer was virus free for about five days after the installation, so I doubt there's any relationship.

Thanks for the feedback, Let me mention that even though Prevx does the job on some infections at times, I have it on my computer to test it and I had a lot of strange issues including a real slowdown in performance. Seems there is no doubt it does not play with Norton well. We made a wise choice removing it.

I can assume this item is still onboard: xlibgfl254.dll and that basically it is your only issue right now.
BlackLight did not report any hidden rootkit. Since we know this item is bad, let's see if we can remove it like this:

Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\Windows\System32\xlibgfl254.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

Post a new HJT log and let me know if that fixed the problem.

Thanks, the problem is the hackers come up with the junk faster than we can learn to remove them. Some infect so many folks, like Smitfraud that comprehesive fixes are created. This one is new and it is also very rare to have a situation where one file is all we are dealing with. As a result we approach the infection carefully assuming if we can't see it, something like a rootkit is causing it. I am glad everything worked out to the best for you. System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
