I recently got a very bad virus which crippled my machine. I think the main one was smitfraud-c and smitfraud-c Toolbar888

I managed to get rid of them and subsequently ran several spyware programs and got rid of any traces of spyware - although I now seem to get abot 10-15 tracking cookies every time I run a spyware program even though i delete them every time

Also every time i'm browsing the web in internet explorer I frequently get redirected to abcsearch.com and monstermarket.com for no reason - just while looking at a web page:sad:

Welcome to the forum, you are infected and they are nasty. I fear we are dealing with a Vundo trojan, I am not 100% sure Smitfraud is gone and we have this junk to deal with.

I also need to say that because I don't see an antivirus scan results posted, I have to assume you missed these directions.

You can hold that scan, I may need it later and will let you know. Now that you have that information, if you wish to proceed, we need to do so like this.

1) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow only these directions:

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

If you should have an old version on the computer, delete it and get the newest version...v2.161

2) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
Once you have it moved, then rename the HJT.exe, call it murdomacleod.exe or whatever you wish. After a reboot we should see Vundo if it was hiding.

3) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
Please follow the directions carefully if you wish to be successful.

1) Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix along with those, please add any comments you think will help.

Thanks for following the directions and returning your information. I will point out that this junk rarely comes out with the ease with which it went in. So far it looks like no Vundo trojan, please follow these directions carefully and in the posted order.
Spyware programs will often prevent the fix from working, McAfee has so much junk anymore I do not know if it will do this or not. If it does, go offline (unplug you internet connection and make sure you turn McAfee back on before you plug it back in)and turn McAfee off until you run the HJT fix. I might add that it would seem with all the junk they make you pay for they should be able to keep you from getting infected?

1) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

3) Follow the instrucions in this link to download, install, update and run AVG Anti-Spyware. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything it find and save the scan report to post.

4) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help.

After doing the above - I also noticed while looking at my internet options under Privacy that it was set to the bare minimum - could this have been done by the virus infections/malware - I have now set it back to normal and all seems OK

Can you see anything suspicious in the above reports ?

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
