my computer is messed up a bit and I have not been able to fix it on my own. I have run SpyBot and adaware and every time I reboot I get find the same stuff. I found this site by running a search on a file name found on adaware (Win32.trojan.spy) I have done all the steps from the sticky thread and here is the HJT log:

MHTML extends HTML to embed encoded objects, such as images, in the HTML document. Although it is actually the HTML rendering extension that renders MHTML, this functionality may also be referred to as the MHTML rendering extension.
This vulnerability is due to the way Windows incorrectly parses the MHTML protocol. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted Web site or an HTML email message. The said Web site can also be sent as a link in email messages or Instant Messaging applications. The malicious user will have to employ social engineering techniques to persuade the user to click on the said links to visit the mentioned Web sites.
Systems that frequently use Internet explorer are at risk from this vulnerability. Attackers who successfully exploit this vulnerability can take complete control of the system, if the user is logged on with administrative user rights. Users with lesser user rights are affected less.

Malware exploiting this vulnerability:
unknown
This update resolves a newly discovered, privately reported vulnerability in the RichEdit component in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. When successfully exploited by a remote malicious user, the vulnerability allows the malicious user to gain control of the affected system. Users who are currently logged on with administrative user rights are more vulnerable than users who have fewer user rights.
The vulnerability exists because of the insufficient validation of Microsoft Windows and Office RichEdit components when parsing OLE objects embedded in Rich Text Format (RTF) files. Moreover, this update modifies the way that the Microsoft Windows and Office RichEdit components parses OLE objects embedded RTF files.
To exploit the vulnerability, a remote malicious user entices a user to open an email attachment or proceed to a Web site containing an RTF file that has a malformed OLE object embedded within.
In a Web-based attack scenario, this vulnerability cannot be automatically exploited. The attacker has to host a Web site that contains a specially crafted RTF file that is used to attempt to exploit this vulnerability. There is no way to force users to visit the malicious Web site. Instead, an attacker would have to persuade them to visit the Web site, typically by getting them to click a link that takes them to the attacker's site, and then convince the user to open the file using a Microsoft Office application.
The vulnerability cannot be exploited automatically through emai. For the attack to be successful, a user must open an attachment that is sent in an e-mail message and then interact with the embedded OLE object within an RTF file.

Hi

Uninstall via add/remove programs:

Ipwindows

Look in your control panels add/remove programs for any of these and uninstall them:

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
or anything similar with Oin or Outerinfo in it.
Zolero
Tizzletalk
MediaTickets
Cowabanga
and any other programs you didn't install or don't recognize - if your not sure please ask first

Download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed (http://www.outerinfo.com/howto.html)

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

does this need to be done in any particular order? when I try to run add/remove programs all I get is... wait while the list is populated... but nothing ever happens. it has been at least ten minutes.

Hi

In that case just skip that step and download & run that uninstaller :)

Wouldn't you know it, just when I got back to the infected computer the add/remove programs was populated. well I ran through all the programs and removed the ones that you mentioned that were there. I also ran both the uninstaller and vundo fix and here are the logs:

Also I forgot to mention that upon start up I get two error messages;

Windows\system32\npnkrpoh.dll failed to load

and

symantic auto protect failed to load.

this started before we started this process and it still is the case. I guess that just means we are not done yet?

one other thing I forgot to mention was that when I ran through spy bot in the beginning smitfraud-c.toolbar.888 was never permanently removed.

Hi

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: wineak32 - wineak32.dll (file missing)

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

things are running night and day. thank you so much for your help.

I am going to put the zone alarm firewall now. is there anything else I can do to keep this from happening again?

again thanks

I just rebooted my computer after installing zone alarm and I am still getting the error message that symantic auto protect failed to load. Is there something more I need to do to correct this?

Hi

You already have firewall in Norton so need for ZoneAlarm.

I'd suggest uninstallation & re-installation of Norton (remember to unplug network cable during that process).
