i have been getting the following message when I open certain programs like MSN messenger, GTalk, and many others. the message is (for MSN messenger for example)--->

---------------------------------------------------------------------
msnmsgr.exe - Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\xlibgfl254.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

This has not been giving much of a problem except these error messages, but while searching about it on the net, it said its a 'Trojan', so i thought to seek help. I read the "before u post" thread but am sorry if i havent posted accordingly. i couldnt comprehend it properly. i have Spybot S&D, fully updated, but it did not detect any problem. i couldnt find any 'log file' that u asked. do i also have to download HijackThis or any other program?

Thanks for ur help in advance.

Arjun

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking Forums!

Yes, you have to download hijackthis..

Click HERE (http://ralphcaddell.com/Uploads/HjThis.exe) to download a self-extracting version of Hijackthis. Double click on the file, by default it will extract itself to C:\Hijackthis

Next, double click on Hijackthis.exe. Click "Scan System and Save a Logfile." A Notepad will appear in your screen, copy and paste the contents of the notepad to your next reply.

on rebooting to normal mode the errors messages came up again.

i have downloaded AVG antivirus as u had said. another security expert 'pskelley' on this forum has also given me the following advice, i thought i'd show it to u-->>

Hello Arjun and welcome to the forum, I just did help a member kill this one and I thought perhaps you would want to view that topic.
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=12523
As you will see we bounced around a little getting organized and since I could see nothing supporting the trojan, we used the "Delete on reboot" function in HJT and it worked perfectly.
If you feel comfortable doing this and it fixes your issue, great. If not, then please wait until a helper is available.

Thanks

Do tell me what to do next.
Thanks
Arjun

Hi,

Thanks for showing me that.

Are you the one who downloaded this "patch"?

E:\Tennis Elbow\d-885ma1.zip/DVT/patch.exe
__________

Open HijackThis > Click Misc Tools Section
Click "Delete a File on Reboot."
Copy and paste this into the file name box: C:\WINDOWS\system32\xlibgfl254.dll
Hijackthis will ask you if you want to reboot, click yes.

*Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
Click Start > Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp), and install it to your computer.

On your next reply, please include a fresh HijackThis log and a description on how is your machine running.

Hi,

It's not JDK you want to download but JRE (Java runtime environment) Those 2 are different.

Yes please, the safest way is to delete the whole folder:

E:\Tennis Elbow

empty your recycle bin.
____________

Congratulations! Your log looks clean!

Configure Windows Xp to hide system files:

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.

Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr

Select the More options tab

Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.

Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.

» ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com)
» Kerio (http://http//www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm)

Install SpyWare Blaster
~You can download it from here (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html)
~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

IESpyAds
~You can download it from here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm#IESPYAD)
~If you want to know how IEspyads work you can take a look at it here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial53.html)
~Please note that IESpyAds only works with Internet Explorer.

Note: Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" (http://castlecops.com/t7736-So_how_did_I_get_infected_in_the_first_place.html)

Happy safe surfing!

i have removes JDK and installed JRE 6u1. i have deleted the 'Tennis Elbow' folder too. but the folder with the virus has been quaratined by AVG anti-spyware. should i remove it from there too? there is an option "remove finally".

i have configured XP to hide system files too.

im having a problem in the next part. wen i choose to create a new restore point, asks me a "restore point description". wat do i type in here?

also, in the Run window there is no option saying "more options". if i click OK after typing 'cleanmgr', it asks me which drive i want to clean. how do i proceed?

the link to Kerio is not working.

Thanks

Yes, you can do that.

im having a problem in the next part. wen i choose to create a new restore point, asks me a "restore point description". wat do i type in here?

You can type any description you want but it is better to choose a description that you will remember so when you'll use system restore, you'll know which to choose.

also, in the Run window there is no option saying "more options". if i click OK after typing 'cleanmgr', it asks me which drive i want to clean. how do i proceed?

I'm guessing you have Win Xp home?

Do this to clear your restore point:

Turn off System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

the link to Kerio is not working.
