After having a few problems with my PC I removed a file called IPwins.exe. I now get a warning message "Ipwins.exe - unable to locate component" every time I start up my PC. Does anyone know how I can stop? ANy help would be very much appreciated.

Hello.

ipwins.exe is considered an undesirable program, added by adware.

As you have posted in the malware removal forum please see this topic:
"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288)

Skip the Spybot-S&D scan for now.

Copy/paste the information requested into this topic, and a helper will respond when available.

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum, that's OIN/PurityScan adware, see this: http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/ipwins/
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Ipwins.exe+&btnG=Google+Search

http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html
http://www.spywareremove.com/removePurityScan.html

If you need more help than that, then I suggest you follow these directions:
"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I used the online scans and spybot (as suggested in the mandatory steps link posted above) several times over until they all came out saying that my PC was okay. That was several days ago though and I still seem to be getting viruseses and adware since then, which leads me to suspect that maybe there was still something on my pc that these scans didn't pick up?

I have run Hijackthis and pasted the log file underneath. Any help or suggestion from anyone would be very very much appreciated indeed!

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. I can't see a whole lot (just some trash we will get later) in the HJT log. PurityScan/OIN while technically adware is nasty and hard to get rid of. The purveyors need to be drug out to a tree and hung from a branch. Let's do a little investigating to see if anything is left before we clean.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Follow the instructions in this link to download, install and update AVG Anti-Spyware. Make sure you delete or at least quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.

Restart and post the uninstall list and the scan report.

Thanks

Hi,

I ran Hijackthis, and downloaded, updated and ran AVG as you suggested. The log files for both are below.
The AVG file was too long to post on this forum so i've left out all the ":mozilla.104:C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT\00000430.MOZ -> TrackingCookie.247realmedia : Cleaned." lines. These lines that I have omitted all contain this line except with different tracking cookie names. All of them have their status set to "cleaned".

Opps, forgot to post the link to AVG Anti-Spyware. Good job going and getting it:bigthumb:

Hey, you are pretty good at this, I can hook you up with links to the free training schools if you like.

I believe you will find an update, once you have the newest version, then uninstall all old version in Add Remove Programs.

Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.11) <<< out of date, hackers are starting to exploit that browser, if you are going to use it, keep it updated like all programs.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

Far as I can see that is all, you may want to look for stuff you no longer use. Since I see p2p a program, even though the program is not illegal, many files that can be downloaded are, and unsafe.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
