Dear all,
I have faced one serious problem after my IT person has uninstalled and reinstalled windows on my laptop. After updating to all new updates from Microsoft I found that when my laptop connects to internet, svchost.exe in task manager runs at 99% to 100% CPU and takes up to 100M memory.
I tried most malware reomvers, tried spybot all actions before posting hjt, but still when only there is internet connection it starts to run at high speeds.
I paste here hjt report and also tasklist /svc, which shows I got 2 spyware.

Hello and welcome to the Forums :)

We'll begin with an online scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)

Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello :)

The infections were in the Outlook inbox folder. You should do some cleaning there.

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

Hello :)

OK that log was clean too.

This is propably a bug with the updates. Microsoft has announced a fix for this.
You should try if the following HotFix helps --> Link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q927891)

When you run Windows Update to scan for updates that use Windows Installer, including Office updates, CPU utilization may reach 100 percent for prolonged periods

Let me know :bigthumb:

Dear Mr JAk3,

I have downloaded the hotfix Update for Windows XP (927891) (I did not have neither 927891 nor older version 916089)
Restarted as mentioned but still when I get internet connection PC runs with 100% of Svchost.exe. What I do to stop it is that I disable radio, on PC and that way I disable wifi connection. svchost runs for couple of minutes at 100%, but then stops, and I can connect again to radio and get internet access. I do not use cable connection just WIFI.
So only way I can use PC when I disable internet and enable later.

I also did some cleaning
deleted this email:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst/Archive Folders/Inbox/04 May 2005 05:50 from webmaster@ukrpack.net:mailing error/error-mail_info.zip Infected: Email-Worm.Win32.Sober.p skipped

but could not find this one:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst Mail MS Mail: infected - 1 skipped
so overall it seems like no current cure for svchost.exe?

Hello :)

Have you checked the Windows Update site again? Any available updates?

Then it is the same infection mentioned twice. You removed it, good.

You may always try to restore the state of your computer to a date before the update via System Restore and see if the problem is gone. Then you may report to Microsoft and wait for the problem to be fixed.

Dear Mr_JAk3,
I will try those options you suggested, I will mention that I did try update once it did not find any new updates, then tried a day after and received error updating. I will try to update once again and see if system restore will help. now I am thinking that it is definetelly the Microsoft or windows update causing that.

I will try all this and will post any changes.

So far thank you for the help provided, now I know where to persuade the problem.

Dear Mr_JAk3,
i was not posting for a while as I was checking if problem was gone, though the problem is still present.
I am not sure which update I should remove, which is the one that causing the problem, I made a list of all my updates I have installed since windows reinstall. somehow I think the problem was during the first update, as far as I can remember then since early beginning as I got laptop svchost.exe was running high speeds.
It is strange that i do not see the hotfix 927891 in the list of updates.
Just ran another update and it did not find anything.

I have copied the full list of updates I retrieved from Microsoft Update, may be your eye can catch some update that might cause this problem? I assume they should be somewhere in the bottom, probably created on 22. veebruar (February) or next couple of days.

Hmm the update wasn't on the list...

as far as I can remember then since early beginning as I got laptop svchost.exe was running high speeds.
Maybe it is something else...

Make a new folder in the C:\drive called silentrunners
Download 'silent runners" from here: (direct download)
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs
Save it to your silentrunners folder.

Click start> run> type cmd and hit enter
Type the following exactly and hit enter after each line.
cd c:\silentrunners and hit enter
"silent runners.vbs" -all and hit enter

Wait until it pops up saying its completed, then post the resulting logfile here
It will be very large. You may need several posts to include everything

OK nothing bad there either. There are many things that can cause this problem...

Let's see...

1. Download this file - combofix.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

hi just ran it,
and it did clear some data like data entered in browsers forms, but I have it backed, and it changed default browser to Internet Explorer Back. Though it is no problem.
So here is the report,

I see silent runner in the list and some other ones, should not they have been removed or something?

Hello and sorry for the huge delay...

Delete this file if found:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMMGR32.EXE

Then you could create a new user account. Then restart the computer and log in with the new account. Does the svchost.exe problem appear at the new account too?

i ok I have messed up,

I have deleted C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMMGR32.EXE, and created new account.

svchost.exe at the start also did run full speed, but after some more restarts it did not. I made sure it runs every hour, for about 5 minutes. First run at 14.00 second at 15.03, third at 16.25, (as I started laptop at 16.20)

and secondly I am now can not log in with my first user account, (only with new account), when I restart just one new user appears for logging in.
I have all my emails etc set back to old account.

Is there any way to enter old account to copy all to new account? Or how can I enable old account as well? If I copy cmmrg32.exe back would it work? But I do not have the file anymore

Hello :)

Hmm this is strange...the file you deleted was 0 bytes on size so it wasn't working correctly anyway....It wasn't legitimate

Please follow these intructions (http://dwightblackburn.com/winxp/) and run the system file check utility. You might have more files missing.

Please go to Control Panel -> User acounts
Does your old account appear there?

Hi
I am currently running the utility, it is good I had CD, I will post the results what it says

I checked Control panel user's list and there is only new account listed there. Regarding the old documents then they are listed in here C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator

but when I go to My Computer, then I have listed there:
shared documents folder and "new account documents" folder, but logically there should have been extra folder "Administrator documents" (old account)

OK I have run scannow sfc several times (why, as I though some report would appear, but it did not), copied i386 folder before scanning to c drive, changed in the registry as prompted D to C for looking up i386 folder.

The scan created new folder (I asume) C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\system32\dllcache, with 1071 files created size 149Mb,

in the user accounts still just new account.

CMMGR32.EXE file was not created so it is not looking good. and as I restarted then svchost.exe ran again at full speed.

OK good :)

Hmm there was a similar case where the svchost problem was related to the Windows Automatic Updates. So let's see if it is the same case here.

Disable the Automatic Updates temporarily:
Start -> Run -> Copy this to the box and hit enter: sysdm.cpl
Choose the Automatic Updates-tab
Check the Do not update automatically -option and hit Ok
Restart the computer.
Does the svchost.exe problem still appear ?

Hi again,
after i have disabled automatic updates, the problem with svchost.exe has disappeared. So it seems the problem was in the automatic updates as you mentioned. I guess I will just stick with updates being disabled and run updates once a week.

:bigthumb: Thanks for help I appreciate it.

Hello and sorry for the delay, I had problems with the internet connection...

Ok nice to hear that we found the cause. You could now try if installing this hotfix helps -> Link (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q927891)
Install it, restart the computer and trun the updates on and see how it works.

If it doesn't wrok then it is best to disable the automatic updates temporarily and wait for Microsoft to release a fix.

Hi,
tried updating and downloaded that hotfix, actually I found it already installed on my computer. So after enabling automatic updates, svchost runs at 100% as usual, for several minutes then stops. So I made it clear I would stick just with updates off, as nothing else seems to work, and hope at some stage there will be this update or bug fix issued by microsoft.

We tried found problem, but not much to do, but thanks for making this clear:bigthumb:
