Computer totally jams requiring a cold start

Hi,
I am new to this so please bear with me while I learn the ropes.
Every once in a while (but frequently) my computer will jam requiring me to push the start button to turn it off and then restart. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work. The only thing that works is the mouse pointer moves on the screen, but with no effect. Clicking it does nothing.

Anyway, I tried as instructed to run a remote virus scan using the links given, but none seem to work. Panda won't run at all (I did install the activeX), eTrust starts but then my computer freezes as described above. BitTransfer is a non-working link, and TrendMicro won't start.

When I run my internal virus AVAST it shows no viruses. I also ran the Spybot S&D. No problems were found.

I obviously need help.

Welcome to the forum, I can see some issues but not what I would expect to be causing your freezing problem. I would like to know if you do not get an error message from Windows when this "jam" occurs. I would like that message and any other you are receiving word for word. Understand this may have nothing to do with malware and you may have other issues.

These appear to have something to do with a valid process? But I wonder why it is running from a Temp\~e5d141.tmp folder. If you need this item, move it to a secure folder as we will clean all Temp folders.

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Thank you for your response.
There is no message that comes up before the computer freezes. It just freezes without warning.
I don't know what the processes that are in the Temp folder. The links you provided suggest that they are part of photoshop CS. I am a user of Photoshop CS, and one clue to my problem may be that some of the time, but not always, the freeze occurs after this:

I got this from GoBack which maintains a log of all activities on my computer. (It's main function is similar to MS Restore.) This was the last activity that occurred just before the computer froze. It has to do with Photoshop CS's checking software authenticity. It's not always the last thing that occurs before the freeze, though. If it helps, here is another thing that happened at another time today just prior to the computer freezing:

I don't know if I need this item ~e5d141.tmp, or where to move it to. In fact, I couldn't find it in any folder when I did a search. But I did find c:\Windows\Prefetch\~E5D141.TMP-172F7A10.pf.

Regarding the running of two virus programs. As far as I know I am only running AVAST. I used to use Norton antivirus but I unistalled it. (I do have Norton Ghost installed.) I also don't see Norton, or any other antivirus program in my add/remove programs list. So if there is one, I don't know which one it is. I am also only using one firewall program (ZoneAlarm). I've disabled the Windows firewall.

There were no malware issues when I rebooted, and no error messages.

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. Before I look at the HJT log, let me just say something is causing the freezes and a good clue would be what you are doing at the time it happens.

I would start by searching that site for answers, might be you need a new driver so check for driver update availbility.

It has to do with Photoshop CS's checking software authenticity. <<< same issue probably, this program may not be compatible with Windows or as I said you may need to update the program's driver. I would start with there technical support.

As far as the Temp stuff, if you cleaned that temp folder and ran ATF-Cleaner (it cleans Prefetch) you should have removed any possible problem in those.

Now to the issues with anti-virus programs:

As far as I know I am only running AVAST. I used to use Norton antivirus but I unistalled it. (I do have Norton Ghost installed.)

You can Google the executables to be sure they have nothing to do with the Ghost program or contact Symantec Support.

While I do encourge you to discuss this with Symantec, you are going to experience issues running both antivirus programs at the same time. At the least will be that both programs will be less effective.
If you intend to use Avast4, I suggest your disable those services and delete these files:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\

I have a program from Symantec that will clean off the old stuff, but it specifically states that Norton Ghost is removed with the rest.

If I can do more, please let me know.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I've actually done all the things you suggested at the top of your reply. But I can tell from what you say that I need to pursue Photoshop as the most likely culprit to my problem.

Regarding Norton Antivirus. I would welcome your program from Symantec that will clean off their software from my computer. It is so invasive. I don't mind if it also removes Ghost. I can reinstall it (I don't know that I will) if needed. I have another backup software that I use now, anyway.

So If you don't mind emailing it, I'd appreciate it. I searched Symantec's site, but the best I could find was the removal from Win98/ME.

WARNING: If you'll use the tool above, you will also lose Norton Ghost.

I'll take a moment to post manuel instruction if you would prefer.

1) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to (posted below) and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Disable these Services:
Symantec Event Manager
Symantec Password Validation
Symantec Settings Manager
Symantec Core LC

End process in Task Manager on:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

You can also use HJT, it has a process manager:

Then delete that folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ gives you any trouble just boot to safe mode and delete it there.

Thank you so much for all your help so far, and being willing to practically walk me through various solutions to my problem.

I will try the removal of Norton and see if that may be my problem. I've already contacted Adobe regarding Photoshop CS. Tech support (for not to minor a fee, but I am not complaining - if it works) directed me to some articles that provide procedures that address this precise issue. I guess I am not alone in this. And you seem to have hit the nail on the head as to where to look.

Again, I want to thank you. What a great forum!

I'll post a comment when I've got it resolved and let others know what the actual solution is. You never know, someone else may run into this.
