View Full Version : CoolWWWSearch...and others....nasty!

Hey Guys....
I'm usually only observing these forums (it is fun watching you guys outfox....the fox!).....and can usually rid my computer from malware/spyware without your help (though I get it from reading your posts to others). But this time I'm stuck.....this one is nasty!
I'm attaching the Spybot report so no sense rehashing here what malware is detected. But, after removal by Spybot it returns instantly (even when removing via W-safemode). Also, each instance of IE launch, reactivates all malware (detected by TeaTimer).
Additional behavior (I'm listing this becuase it's new....to me at least):
a. Pop ups on desktop (usually related to security or spyware ads).
b. Fake "task bar" icons alerting to "security breaches" or "virus activity" requiring user action to close (which launches more pop ups or IE to a related website).
c. And this one is a gas! When attempting to use "system restore" the process appears to be aborted by a fake "restoring system" screen. When the computer reboots, the system has not been restored to the selected restore date!
Here is the HJT log (after Spybot detect, fix and saving of report):

I will be away from my computer for a few hours, but have "subscribed" to this thread so will be ready to take action as advised.

Hmmm? Is there something wrong with this post or a reason no one has responded (though several posts after mine which are similar in nature have responses)? Did I miss something here?
Tom
Hello.
Someone will take a look at the system and advise you as soon as available to do so.
Please see here:
If you have waited three days for advice post here. (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?p=4836#post4836)

Thank you, Tashi.
My "Why no response" post in this string was based on what appeared to be responses to posts similar to mine, but after the date I made my original post. I am wrong about that, as I see the "string's" stack order in this forum moves up as "replys" are posted to an original string.
My mistake, I apologize for jumping the gun.

Tom Pabst

Hi
Please disable SpybotSD TeaTimer, as it may hinder the removal of the infection.
To disable SpybotSD TeaTimer:
Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on System Startup icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box.
Dont turn it back on until we are completely finished.
We dont want it to inter-fear with our fix's.
Download aboutbuster to your desktop and extract the files inside also to the desktop
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip
run the program, when its finished restart the pc
Download and run cwshredder
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/
restart the pc again. Once back at the forums make and post a new hijackthis log

Hi Lonny,
I responded to your last post/request to run another HJT log.......that post was there when I exited these forums but gone now. I just came back in here to see maybe why I'd not heard back from you (I'm subscribed to this string....no email messages from you since since 12/29). I'll run another HJT and post it here again.

Looks good, Any problems now ?

Morning Lonny,
Well, at least it is morning where I am (San Francisco, CA - USA....it is 6:40am). There doesn't seem to be any problems, though I want to run Spybot "search" again (as that would cause reactivation of the adware before) and I'd also like to turn TeaTimer back on and see what happens?
I tell you, based on this latest adware infection and the posts on this forum, it looks like somebody really upped the ante....on sophistication/tech of adware....borderline malware in my book! Who does this? Is there actually a company called "CoolWWWSearch" that's responsible for this? If so, these people need to be prosecuted! If spam is illegal, so should this malware installed without the user's permission (imho).
I really appreciate the help you gave me (this time), and all the others who have helped remove adware over the last three years I have been coming to this forum. I know my "login" had to be redone recently, so it doesn't really reflect how long I've been using this forum. Maybe that's because for a long time, I didn't need to because I've taken reasonably strong measures to prevent this garbage from finding it's way on to my computer. I wasn't running TeaTimer when I got this infection, not sure it would have stopped it (and I'm not sure I have TeaTimer configured properly.....so I'll have to research that and make sure that I do).
Well, back to the job at hand. I am off to re-run SpyBot, turn TeaTimer back on.....and then I'll post one final HJT back here afterwards.....for a final check.
Sincerely and with much regards,
Tom Pabst

I have not turned "TeaTimer" back on yet.....won't do it without an "okay" to do so from you.
I haven't used this "host file" you've mentioned. Will need to look into it and see perhaps give it a "trial run" for a while. Will come back with questions if I have any (won't get to this until later today or tomorrow, however).
Let me know if there's more to fix on the above HJT log. I don't seem to be having other problems (yet). LOL.....

Tom
