3rd. attempt to get this message posted intact!! This prtotcol need to be fixed!!!

Hi,

Uup, here too, another unwitting fumble in my allowing the download of a “would be” codec that resulted in another case of a Spydawn infection. And actually I should have known better, but that’s spilled milk now. I simply cannot get rid of the Spydawn system tray icon that persists in displaying that annoying bubble every minute or so. Please help, as I get the impression from all the posting here to date, that fixing this problem is NOT so simple as it might seem. The running of this SmitfraudFix.exe is potentially dangerous as it will destroy/dismantle a crucial components of your system’s desktop (that will not be recoverable) should one run the SmitfraudFix.exe inappropriately. How does one really know when to use this program safely?

Anyway I guess I need help from a “pro” here. Read the “Before You Post” blurb, and hopefully I am providing the necessary logs for you guys to be able to help.

Background: The machine is a ThinkPad T43p. Once the infection was discovered (almost immediately) I tried to uninstall the Spydawn via add/remove programs, then a manual search for all forms of Spydawn files etc. When that failed to fix/remove the infection, I searched the registry for all references to Spydawn. In all these scenarios I removed/deleted the offending files or registry entries. CAV anti virus, ZoneAlarm, Windows Defender and SpyBot all have at various time found some kind of Spydawn files or entries, which I allowed these programs to remove the offending files/entries also. All this has failed to remove the tray icon “system alert” and its irritating popup bubble.

I should also mention that one of the above programs (I believe Windows Defender or ZoneAlarm) makes reference to an entry in the C drive’s “System Volume Information” folder that there is an entry/reference related to Spydawn. All my attempts to access the “System Volume Information” folder are unsuccessful informing me that access is denied.

Below is the hijackthis log, and the initial Smitfraud log. These were run in “normal” mode, not sure if this was correct or not.

My Panda log as scanned 04-05'07 is attached as a .txt file as it WOULD NOT copy/paste as text in this space, appearantly the file was too large. (2 KB and iguess more than 21000 characters in length).

Just mabe??? this limited message format IS TOO SMALL...limiting for adequate posts of logs under these circumstances i.e. fouled up compters, again???

Not really tring to be a nudge, just that Iam hoping/expecting that I be able to comply with your desire to provide the requested/needed?? information in an effectient, consise and timely manner. I have an 'inkling' that my system may be really badly fouled up by the Spydawn thing. Yourn patients and understanding is greatly appreciated.

Well... I geuss we will not be doing the attchment either! My Panda log file is approx. 94 KB the max to attach is a SCANT 19KB...think the issue I raised above very likely has merit???

Any suggestions as to how I am to get the damn log file to you folks is greatly appreciated here too!

Welcome to the forum, let me see if I can help, first you have posted so much stuff, I want to start with the directions to be sure you have seen them: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process. Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

There is nothing wrong with the protocol if you follow those directions. Sometimes logs are to large for one posting and have to be split.

If you want my help, please follow the directions, your version of Smitfraudfix is outdated and I can see you have the infection from that report but I would like to see the "Search" scan with the newest version,
SmitFraudFix v2.166 which you can download from here: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php
Follow ONLY these directions:
Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Post ONLY that C:\rapport.txt, once I have time to look at it I will post instructions as soon as possible after that.

Thanks

Thanks, the infection is there. The creator of Smitfraudfix indicates that the Desktop can be damaged if the fix is run on an uninfected computer, hense the care to make sure it is present. Let's do this now:

http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed

Follow these directions:
Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

Thanks pskelly,:alien: It appears to have removed it as the:mad: spydawn/system-alert icon:mad: no longer is showing up in the system tray. However apon the re-boot up into normal mode the my normal desktop background theme was replaced with a solid blue background. I was able to restore it back via deshtop properties then themes tab:) If this is a normal or common occurance or effect of the applied fix, folks should probably have a "heads-up" regarding it and how to correct this as well. Just a suggestion.:bigthumb:

Below, the now current SmitfraudFix and HJT logs (if they will fit here):

"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
I would appreciate it if you would read the instruction please:

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
It is preferable, and the log easier to read, if you do not use the [code] or [php] options.
If you would like a response to your last post, follow the instructions for turning off word wrap and post the information again:sad:

Thanks

Sorry, word-wrap for both files disabled and then copy/pasted here, hopfully it will display in the desired format. As it appears on my screen/post-web page I wasn't able to confirm it. Let me know.

Thanks, I appreciate your posting the logs so I can work with them. Some information for you, then I would like to clean a little if everything seems back to normal.

1) Your Java Program needs and update, read this:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

2) You are runnig MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. I have no idea if malware programs are turned off as I can not see them.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\Documents and Settings\Dennis Majkowski\Desktop\msconfig.exe /auto

3) This program is "Optional", I personally consider it questionable.
O2 - BHO: MEGAUPLOADTOOLBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-CCB0-B130EEDBE97C} - C:\PROGRA~1\MEGAUP~1\MEGAUP~1.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: MEGAUPLOADTOOLBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-CCB0-B130EEDBE97C} - C:\PROGRA~1\MEGAUP~1\MEGAUP~1.DLL
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download Link Using Mega Manager... - D:\Program Files\Megaupload\Mega Manager\mm_file.htm

as is this one:
O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: WeatherBug Browser Bar - powered by MyWebSearch - {8EAB99C9-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL

4) Some information about download managers:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/articles/download-managers.html
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads.php?cat=dlman

5) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

8) System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Thanks,

I appreciate your help PSKelly, please be patient, my schedule suddenly got heavy again, and it might be another day or to before I can get to this issue again. Yes, the spydawn infection does indeed appear to be gone, and will start work on the other "clean-up" issues you suggest shortly. I will post here again when these are accomplished or if I run into difficulty. Again my thanks.

Dennis
