View Full Version : NIS2007/NAV suddenly zapped

I think something has bit me. Norton will not launch and pc is suddenly very slow to reboot. I tried to uninstall /reinstall Norton but it asks me if I want to delete 3 items in quarentine. When I respond yes, the uninstall program closes itself. I am afraid to respond no because it sounds fishy to me. Also, I noticed 2 items in MSCONFIG that are a series of 5 square characters. Arabic?

ActiveScan runs awhile then closes itself ( as soon as I turn my back ).

Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome to the forum, I understand you said you can not run an online scan, I may need that later. I can't see the items because you are running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode. If you have it turned off to keep them from starting, turn it on long enough to get a HJT scan with everything running, then turn them back off until we find out what they are. Here is what I do see:

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

"Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/03/AR2005120300087.html

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\
C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\

So please do this:

1) Uninstall one of those anti-virus programs.

2) Update your Jave program: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2

3) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

4) Post a new HJT log with everything running and we will go from there. Please add any information or comments you think will help.

5) Keep the computer offline as much as possible, this junk will attract more, until we resolve your issues.

Thanks...Phil

wow what a difference - lots of error messages after rebooting in normal start up. computer tried to connect to internet and toolbar at bottom of screen is now tan instead of blue. AVG scan was clean but showed one change...ntoskrnl.exe. Now back in selected start up because IE wouldn't connect to internet.

below are the uninstall log and hjt scan with normal start up.

Not sure how to proceed with this one, I'll give you what information I have and you can decide.

1) First, you are still running both antivirus programs?

2) You have not provided much information but this item:
ntoskrnl.exe when searched provides this Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ntoskrnl.exe&btnG=Google+Search

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe

Cause:

Keyboard issue
Miscellaneous corruption
Corrupt boot.ini file.
Missing boot.ini file.
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.

I am seeing nothing in the way of malware in the HJT log, and because of the situation, don't know how we can even attempt to run scans to look for hidden malware.

I see this: F3 - REG:win.ini: load=??? ?
and you might see something in this Google that will help.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=REG%3Awin.ini%3A+load%3D%3F%3F%3F&btnG=Search

I really believe you have severe problems other than malware. Probably hardware or corrupted Operating System.

I will comment on the uninstall list, I am looking for security issues or malware, and nothing jumps out at me as either with the exception of the multiple AV programs.

Thanks

Took me a while to find your latest post. I guess I kept pulling old versions of the thread. Here we go.

1. OK - AVG is running and norton is still installed but will not launch. I tried to uninstall but it has some items in quarantine. It asked me if I wanted to delete them and I said yes. The uninstall program closes each time I try this. This started before I installed avg.

What will happen if I say no. Do these items run loose on my PC?

2. I will delete the F3 items. I've seen then before in msconfig and they change sometimes.

I guess I'm relieved it's not someone taking over my computer.

Thanks, and let me know how to get rid of norton. I didn't really like it anyway but I like the parental controls. Other options/recommendations for equal / better protection programs?

OK Uncle Ed, you have said to me that you wish to run AVG Anti-Virus and you would like to remove Norton/Symantec from the computer. Please see this link:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=
WARNING: If you'll use the tool above, you will also lose Norton Ghost.

Once you run that, restart the computer and post a new HJT log. Please tell me about any malware issues at that point.

Here is information you may wish to view along with the children?

norton removal tool would not download. The window appears but had a white background with nothing in it. The cursor had an hourglass next to it but nothing ever materialized.

Edd, I am having the same issue opening the webpage and I did check that link when I posted it for you. Here is the link again:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

I am having an issues opening any links at Symantec.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Norton+Removal+Tool+&btnG=Google+Search

It may be a problem with their website? This website: Symantec Service & Support on this page: http://www.symantec.com/servsupp.html will not even open. I suggest you wait a day or so to see if issues with their webpages are resolved. If not, then post a HJT log and we will remove their junk manually.

Thanks...Phil

I can get in now but did not try to download it. No Norton on my computer, let's see if we can clean the last of it manually. Let's do a little cleaning while we are at it.

The first thing I noticed is you are running this program which is obsolete.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ <<< Uninstall
Microsoft no longer supports that program, it is now called Windows Defender. Please uninstall it in Add Remove Programs. While there it would be best if you can uninstall the Symantec stuff. If it will not uninstall, then move on to the manual removal.

Next, I would like you to try one more time to use the removal tool:

Download from here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Print the instructions
Download the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
Make sure to choose your Operating System
I use Windows Vista/XP/2000. DOWNLOAD
Choose to Run the program when given an option.
Only move to the numbered instructions if this fails to work.
_________________________________________________________________

This is a lot of instructions, read them over and follow them carefully.

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Do the same thing for these services:
Symantec Event Manager
Symantec Network Proxy
Symantec Lic NetConnect service
COM Host
Symantec IS Password Validation
LiveUpdate
Symantec Core LC
Symantec AppCore Service

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ <<< delete that folder

C:\Program Files\Symantec\ <<< delete that folder

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log.

Thanks for the feedback, you know this item is runing on the computer...correct:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PnkBstrA.exe
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-2623.html

(second request to do this)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe <<< obsolete program, uninstall it in add remove programs.

I don't see any other problems.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

MS AntiSpyware does not show up in Add/Remove Programs.

I don't know what PunkBuster is and I don't see it on earlier hjt scans. It looks like a gaming function- kids play a couple on-line things with friends. I'll ask them if they downloaded it.

Understand HJT is a Process Manager, when we remove the item with HJT it stops the process from running, you must navigate to the folder and delete it before a reboot when it would be running again and require safe mode to delete the program.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe"

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ <<< delete that folder

Thanks

If you wish you can try booting into safe mode and deleting it there, or you can just leave it alone as long as it causes you no problems. At one time that program has an uninstaller in Add Remove programs, I have no idea why it is not there now.

I booted in safe mode, still getting access denied. Did the system restore thing you recommended. Running normal start up now but I have 2 issues I'd ask you to comment on / help.

1. Internet explorer open on start up

2. I get a message about svchost.exe which reads:

" Instruction at ox7c918fea refereneced memory at 0x00000010
Memory could not be written"

"To terminate click OK. To debug click Cancel."

I've clicked both and the message goes away either way.

Also, is it OK now to download an anti-virus program?

Thanks.

Also, is it OK now to download an anti-virus program?Yes, please install an antivirus program. You started out with two and I only asked you to remove one. AVG Anti-Virus 7.5 is a good free program:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

I am looking at your other questions and will respond as soon as I have information. Important that you have one Antivirus program, one firewall and at least one good spyware program that runs in realtime.

Thanks

Internet explorer open on start up <<< I do not know what you mean by this?

Please post the error messages word for word exactly as you see them. After you post the error, then follow the directions to send Microsoft information about the error and let me know what they respond.

1. What I meant was after a reboot and my desktop appears, the computer tries to connect to the internet by itself. If the modem is on, my homepage shows up. If I uncheck iexplore.exe in msconfig, this doesn't happen.

2. error message verbatim:

title bar reads- svcHost.exe - Application Error

text reads- The instruction at "0x7c918fea" referenced memory at "0x00000010". Memory could not be "written".

Thanks.

OK, open Internet Explorer then Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab.
In the center of that Window you have three places where you can put the bullet. For DSL (I have Verizon) you want the Bullet to be in "Never dial a connection". Apply and OK your way out. If that does not do it, then contact your ISP for help with their settings.

Thanks
