View Full Version : HJT this and certain keywords cause windows and programs to close - My HJT log
Hey everyone, first time poster!
I went through the steps I should take before posting, and I did the online virus scan...except that I couldn't find anywhere offering me to save it! But there were only 4 files that were infected, and it claimed it successfully removed them all, because when I rescanned, it didn't turn anything up.
Here's my HJT log:

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking forums!
Is this log taken from safe mode? If so, next time please post a hijackthis log taken from normal mode only.
Also, can you please describe your problems further? What words will cause programs to close? Does HJT close too?
*Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Cheers for the quick reply!
The reason my HJT log was from Safe Mode was because at the time, if I was in normal mode, every time I tried to open the folder containing it, it would close immediately. The same would happen if I Googled 'Hijackthis'.
Also I couldn't access Msconfig, it suffered the same problem as mentioned above.
But! thanks to the SDFix, those aspects of the problem seem to have gone, as after I had finished SDFix, I was able to open and run HJT normally. I can also now use Msconfig.

Hi, looking better there:laugh:
Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
Mirror 1 (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/MsnVirRem.exe)
Mirror 2 (http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item9)
Mirror 3 (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/MsnVirRem.exe)
First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish
Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log
Right ok, I ran MSNVirRem.exe and I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing but it couldn't find anything, and I have had problems occuring in MSN, such as messages being sent from my account automatically advertising a link that would then infect the recipient.
Here's the log:
MsnVirRem Log by Skate_Punk_21
Please Note: any existing old logs will have now been renamed to msnvirremOLD.log
Fix running from: C:\Documents and Settings\Tony Lewis\Desktop

Hi,
*Did you have AVG free before? I noticed that you are not running any AntiVirus application. You could get infected immediately after we clean you up. Please download and install ONE of these:
» Avast! (http://www.asw.cz/eng/avast_4_home.html)
» AVG AntiVirus (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free)
» AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/)
*Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the items I listed in bold if found.
Logitech® Desktop Messenger (LDM)
is a free service designed to deliver software support, news and information you can use. LDM ensures that you have simple, speedy, and effortless access to product upgrades, technology tips, and technology news and offers that are relevant to you. LDM delivers information right to your desktop, allowing you to take advantage of all of the advanced features of the Logitech products you own, while staying abreast of new computer-related product and service developments (Logitech and otherwise) that are applicable to your life. Once a week, when connected to the internet, Logitech Desktop Messenger will automatically connect with Logitech servers to see if there are any new messages for you. It performs this check during idle time to avoid slowing down other applications that may be accessing the Internet. If there is a message on the server, then Logitech Desktop Messenger will download the message utilizing bandwidth that would otherwise be unused. After the message is downloaded, Logitech Desktop Messenger will wait for one minute of keyboard and mouse inactivity before displaying the message on your screen. I suggest doing all updates yourself and removing this application.
uTorrent
This program is very likely the reason your system is infested with malware. Even when a program like this is not infected itself, it will still bring malware into your system because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove this program from your system.
*Reboot

On your next reply, please include a fresh HijackThis log, AVG Antispyware log and a description on how is your machine running.
Right, I had a few problems trying to follow your instructions.
When removing programs, I found and uninstalled Utorrent without any trouble, but Logitech DM wasn't listed in the files there. The only Logitech software I could find was Logitech SetPoint, but I didn't remove that.
I then ran HJT, as instructed, and removed the first two files successfully, but I was unable to remove 'O4 - Startup: lsass.lnk = ?', and I received the following error messages:
'Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe)'
The only option it offered me was to press "ok" and I did so, then received this:
'Unable to delete the file:
04 – Startup: lsass.Ink = ?
The file may be in use. Use Task Manager to shutdown the program and run HJT again to delete the file'
I then ran the Task Manager but it wouldn't allow me to shut the program down, as it was a critical system process. (I also retried this in Safe Mode but it still would not work.)
Right, and then I became more confused. I was in Safe Mode, I had opted to view hidden files, but nothing was where you said it would be.
In C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer there was no file "Set6F4.tmp" although there was a similarly named "Set7C4.tmp" and that was it. I didn't delete the other file.
In C:\Documents and Settings\Tony Lewis\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, even though I should have been viewing hidden files, the folder appeared to be empty. I checked the properties of the folder and discovered it did in fact contain two files, but I was unable to "get hold of them". I went through CMD and found the folder, and ran the command "dir", and it turned up there were no files but 2 Dir(s), and when I gave the command "del lsass.ink" I was informed that the file could not be found.
The two folders you asked me to delete, well, they were just as elusive as the above mentioned files. I couldn't find them anywhere. I checked exactly where you asked and they just weren't there. I don't know, maybe I'm just going crazy, but I was able to delete 'Tjacqdhei' using Command Prompt. According to CMD, P2P networking can't be found.
I successfully backed up the registry! My first achievment!
I ran ATF-Cleaner without any hitches.
I then ran AVG-Antispyware and saved the log while I'm including here :

By the way, I’d uninstalled my Antivirus software as I was expecting to Install Bitdefender 10, but trust Royal Mail, it hadn't arrived! I reinstalled AVG for the now.

Hi,
When removing programs, I found and uninstalled Utorrent without any trouble, but Logitech DM wasn't listed in the files there. The only Logitech software I could find was Logitech SetPoint, but I didn't remove that.
Ok.
Ok.
By the way, I’d uninstalled my Antivirus software as I was expecting to Install Bitdefender 10, but trust Royal Mail, it hadn't arrived! I reinstalled AVG for the now.
hehe.. Good :)

Hmmm, I'm no expert, but things seem to be running good thanks! Hopefully my final HJT log is below, I really hope there aren't any more problems. Thanks for all your help, just a few final queries...
Can I now uninstall all the software you've had me download?
Are there any suitable programs, such as Utorrent, that are safer to use? Or are they all basically a very easy way to get infected with malware?
Finally, is it possible that I could begin to learn how to help other people disinfect their computers, and understand what it is you can see when you look at my HJT log and know exactly what's not supposed to be there? Any way for me to learn?

Can I now uninstall all the software you've had me download?
Yes.
Are there any suitable programs, such as Utorrent, that are safer to use? Or are they all basically a very easy way to get infected with malware?
All of them are the same.
Finally, is it possible that I could begin to learn how to help other people disinfect their computers, and understand what it is you can see when you look at my HJT log and know exactly what's not supposed to be there? Any way for me to learn?
Yes there is. You can sign up in the Malware Removal University here: forum.malwareremoval.com
*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.

Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.
*Your Java is out of date....
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
Click Start > Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp), and install it to your computer.
Other than that, Congratulations! Your log looks clean!
Configure Windows Xp to hide system files:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.
Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.

Ok thanks, it all seems good! Just a final thanks for the time you've put in to help me here, I really appreciate it! And as much as I've appreciated your help, I can safely say I hope I never have to ask you for help again, because it's painful and drawn out process dealing with malware
Cheers!
