Norton-Downloader Won't Go Away

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, running Windows XP Home and Norton 2005.

I hope someone's seen this; I have searched the web and have not seen a fix that works yet.

Yesterday a Norton Virus Alert appeared, and will not go away no matter how many times I hit "OK" and there is no way to cancel or close the alert window.

The alert reads:

Virus Alert
High Risk
Norton Antivirus has detected a virus on your computer
Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tmp**.tmp (where ** is any 2 letter/number combo)
Virus Name: Downloader
Action Taken: Unable to quarantine this file (or)

I ran SpyBot, AdAware and Norton in Safe Mode. It showed that similar files were deleted, but when I restart in Normal mode, I get the message again.

Keep in mind this is the installer and there is no way to tell at this point what junk it has installed. I suggest you keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting. I also suggest you download this cleaner:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=1925 and run it to clean all Temp and Prefetch files, which is where part of the infection is showing tight now: Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tmp**.tmp

Since HJT.exe is in a temp folder, you can delete it if you wish and get it here:

I tried doing the online virus scan, but it's been over 17 hours - this can't be right. I will try a different scanner tonight. (I tried eTrust).

No, that is not normal, I have seen them take an hour or two. May be the infection causing it. If you can't complete the scan then complete the rest of the instructions and we will work from there.

I followed all the steps (new Java, clearing all temp files) and the Norton popup seems to have gone away. :bigthumb:

I closed down Trend Micro (keeping Norton), but I see it still shows under Running processes. Before I remove the program, which antivirus program is most suggested by those "in the know" to prevent infections?

Thanks for the feedback, I still see Trend running from Services and I suggest you uninstall one of those completely from your computer. As far as what anti-virus program is the best, depends on who you are talking to. They all have pluses and minuses, but more important than the vehicle, I believe, is the driver. The best AV will not protect you unless maintained properly, updates and run on a regular basis.
I personally suggest only freeware programs, but here is the google with lots to look at:

In the HJT log, I see only this line you can use HJT to remove if you don't want "blank" to be your homepage:

Just in case any bad stuff got in your System Restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
