I am trying to clean my buddy's cimouter, and for the most part, things went swell, but some spyware i cant get rid of on my own, and i don't trust that my experience is enough to resolve it myself.

Here is the Hijack This log:

I also have logs for Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot S&D, and AVG Anti-Virus ready to go.

Additionally, I have been periodically running AVG, Ad-Aware, and SS&D, one at a time of coures, to try and thin out most of the crap. It seems to be working. I haven't saved any of the logs, however. As the computer stands now, SS&D finds nothing. My last Ad-Aware scan found nothing as well, except a few MRUs, which is nothing. AVG, however, kept finding the same items and after four scans, quarantines and deletes, only the most recent scan required a reboot to finalize the delete process. I am currently running another scan with AVG, and will post another HJT log after the scan. After the latter scan, however, I'll still be unconfident that the computer is entirely clean.

I've managed to clean everything out using the three aforementioned programs, and everything seems to be okay now... However, I would still like a professional opinion.

Welcome to the forum, looks like you got Limewire off the computer:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/Pest.aspx?id=453088059
Even if the program is "safe", many of the files moving through the p2p networks are either infected or illegal.

Here is what I suggest for this HJT log:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:51:31 PM, on 4/12/2007

Information first:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
http://www.castlecops.com/s12594-BackWeb_1940576_exe.html
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-180.html

I suggest you do at least this:

1) Update your Java program, once you have the newest version, uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs. You may want to consider turning off autoupdates, the thing is buggy and has not worked for you. You must check this to keep it updated, as you read, hackers are using this to install exploits.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Follow these instructions: http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Be sure to delete or at least quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.

4) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart, post the uninstall list and the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware, and any comments you think will help.

*** VIP *** this computer can not download Windows Critical Updates and that is a major security problem. I suggest you install SP2 as soon as possible.

Thanks

magnus

Thanks for the response pskelley.

First off, I had updated his java after I posted the log. I believe the update I gave him was the J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11. Is there a newer update?

Second off, I already managed to get ATF-Cleaner for his computer. I used it last after I hunted down all the left over file remnants from the obvious viruses he had. If it helps, I researched EVERYTHING I found suspicious through various sources before deleting anything. He hasn't had any problems so far.

Third off, I ran AVG three times before being finally satisfied with the results, and all three scan found nothing. The logs also stated that nothing was found. I took the initiative of saving the most recent in case you wanted it posted. It was obviously a good idea.

Fourth, I ran ATF-Cleaner last, and it cleaned out approx 42MB worth of space. After that, I did a reboot and used the link from my post with the problems I had with my computer (which you also helped me with) to find the Microsoft Update website. I updated his computer to SP2, and then changed his internet security settings to help prevent fututre infections from unrecognized signatures/third-parties.

The only two problems I have were the most inconvenient to you:

One; I couldn't post a fresh HJT log because he needed to take the computer home so that his parents could use the net to pay the bills and
Second; I won't be able to post an uninstall list until later tonight around after 8:30pm tonight because I'll have to wait for him to get home so that I can walk him through the process and then e-mail me the logs so that I may post them.

If I've done anything wrong, please let me know. I would hate to know that I may not have had the best judgement in cleaning his computer (which I dearly hope is not the case).

I would also like to take this time to thank you for the PM you sent back. I sent a PM to tashi and got a reply with several links. I then sent in an appplication at www.MalwareRemoval.com for the University they host. Still no response though.

Thanks much for your time pskelley. Hopefully I managed to do everything right so far.

I forgot to ask you your opinion on the BackWeb-1940576.exe, and the Alcxmntr.exe. Although I didn't really see an absolute need to get rid of them, I would like a more professional opinion. Also, nevermind my question about the newer Java update; I answered my own question simply be checking the link after posting my reply (which figures...:red:).

Once again, thank you.

I personally think you are doing a great job, not a lot of folks that would show concern for a buddy's computer like you have.

First, if you send in application to be considered for Malware University and you followed these instructions:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=233
Then be patient. I know the owner and Chris or one of the teachers will get back to you, there is a lot going on in the malware community right now.
If more than another week should go bye without a response, PM me with the information and I will let those folks know you are waiting for consideration.

If you are running scans, and they are all coming back clean, then I can live without seeing another HJT log and the uninstall list. The other items you asked about, I posted information as they are optional items to consider. I would personally not allow them on my computer, but others do. If all appears to be running well, and you have SP2 in place, just make sure when possible that all three items in the Security Center are green for go and you have done well.

If you have not done so, it would not hurt to set new System Restore files, I believe this should finish you without seeing a HJT log:

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks again for the posted reply.

However, I again jumped ahead of the ideal schedule to help him out. After I posted, I visited him to get the logs (which I never got around to) and went ahead and did a backup just as posted on Symantec's website. I figured it would be a good idea considering a backup now would be much cleaner than the one already existent.

As far as the university goes, I would like to officially note that I was accepted and have started. I appreciate your suggestion rather immensely, and if it weren't for you guys (particularly you, pskelley) at spybot, I probably would not have considered this possible route for education.

Seeing as there is no need for any logs considering that everything seems to be checking out ok, I would say that you guys could probably go on ahead and close this topic and archive it if necessary. If there are any further problems I'll probably go ahead and post a new topic.

Thank you much for you time and encouragement/offer of reccomendation; it means much to me pskelley. Maybe we could work together in the near future.

Meanwhile, best of wishes,
-magnus
