I keep getting the smitfraud-c toolbar back after cleaning with Spybot. Here are my hijack this and vundo logs:

Looks like you were able to remove a Vundo infection, though you still have bad stuff that needs to go. Before I post instructions, let's cover this one.

smitfraud-c toolbar: I understand that if your version of Spybot is totally up to date. you won't see this item that is supposed to be a false positive in Spybot, see this:

Please follow the instructions carefully and in the posted order:

1) Java version is 1.4.2.3
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.
Java version is 1.5.0.10

Download the newest version and uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs. There is a very good chance this is why you got infected?

2) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

3) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

4) Spyware Doctor may stop changes we must make, turn it off until you are done.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\pmlkii.dll <<< delete that file

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know about any malware problems.

Thanks for your help. This was driving me crazy. As you can tell, I'm new to networking forums... I followed all steps, but I was unable to delete the pmlkii.dll file (it says that I have no access; file properties do not say that it is read only). Here's the HJT log.

Thanks for returning you information, that line is gone, HJT probably removed it. When you have an issue like that, boot into Safe Mode:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/ and delete it when not running. You can also use this HJT tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Just be sure the file is bad before you delete it.

I also notice the RO lines are still there, they are not malware, just the way you have your Internet Explorer browser set:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/ie7_basics.mspx

I would like to run another scan to make sure nothing is hidden, if that works for you, follow the directions in this link:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
Delete or quarantine anything found and post the scan report.

Post your uninstall list along with that scan report:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

Please let me know of any malware problems.

Your HJT log looks clean of malware, if there are no malware issues, I would say you are good to go. Please do this now:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
