View Full Version : iexplore.exe causing huge CPU load, not using IE

Hello all! When I boot freshly, I will get an iexplore.exe item in TM that eats up CPU time like crazy. I do not use IE at all, and from searching this forum, I feel must be some malware.

Everytime I run S&D, I will get a long list of spyware which I remove but it always comes back (except when I run it in safe mode).

Ran trendmicro online scan, no threats found.

Here is the scan:

Welcome to the forum, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you have a really nasty infection:
O23 - Service: Windows Network Log Manage - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\MSInfo\Network.exe
http://www.castlecops.com/O23.html
Windows Network Log (Windows Network Log Manage) X Netlog.exe Detected as Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.el i by Kaspersky
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Win32.Hupigon&btnG=Google+Search
http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.bmi&threatid=54045

A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

If you would like to scan that file to be sure:

Tom, out of concern for your safety and security, I need to post this information for you:
A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks

Thank you for your response.

Between my original post yesterday and today, I effectively stopped both iexplore.exe (renamed the folder in safe mode) and network.exe (set the service to disabled). Would a new posting of the hijack log help to see if the trojan is still there?

Is it possible to find out *when* an infection occured? I have a copy of the OS on another HD from about a month ago, it is possible to check that drive for the virus through the online tools?

Thanks again!

Tom, I would be glad to look at a HJT log to let you know if the trojan has been removed, as well as I would have been glad to show you how to remove it. I provided you with that information for your own safety, and nothing we do will change any of that information.

Thanks...Phil

Hi Tom, I don't see any evidence of the trojan in this HJT log. The only thing I do see is an out of date Java program: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\
See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
I suggest you update the program and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove programs.

I will say I doubt that has anything to do with the trojan you had but it is certainly possible:

High risks are typically installed without user interaction through security exploits
You might navigate to any files that are left and right click then choose Properties. They may be a date when it was installed.
Beyond that I can only point at the information available in Google.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
