hi E-literat,

lets start with vundofix first, then we will use hjt:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

* Click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
-------------------------------
after you run vundofix do this:

scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

hi E-literat,

first check for any updates to spybot and your antivirus:

ok we will do everything in safe mode.i would copy/paste this into notepad and save it somewhere so you can read it in safe mode. you will be rebooting 2 times; once after using vundofix, then hjt.
------------------------------
to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart. chose the first option from the list: safe mode

once in safe mode:
start vundofix and this time right click in the blank window to "add files"
copy paste this into the first line:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mprcht.dll

then click "add files" then "close window"
back at the main window the file to remove will be listed
click "remove vundo"

hi E-literat,

well that didnt work, you also got something new in the log. i would use your computer as little as possible until we make some progress. trojans usually fetch more trojans. in fact i would pull the plug on the modem when not in use.

lets see what avg can dig up. after downloading, installing and updating boot into safe mode like before to do the scan:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware(formerly ewido) from and save that file to your
desktop:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware(formerly ewido) and save that file to your
desktop:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG ( ewido) anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
Update now" link.
* Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
----------------------------------------
reboot computer into safe mode to run:

* Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
* Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
* ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
* If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
actions"
* Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
* Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important). Please post the AVG log in next reply.
-----------------------------------
reboot normally, post the avg saved report and new hjt log in next reply.

hi E-literat,

ok thanks for the info. making progress.

can you find this file in the system32 dir:
ntos.exe

located here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32

if so go to this web site, browse for the file on your computer and upload it so it can get checked out by 15 or so applications:

http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
--------------------------
also repeat the online trend micro scan and post that report.

hi E-literat,

lets go back to that first post and the online scan results. see if you can find these files, except do it in safe mode and do this to show all files:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
-------------------------------
might want to copy/paste this in notepad and save it so you can read it in safe mode:
tap f8 key during restart to reach safe mode
once in safe mode see if you can find these and delete them, if you cant, dont worry about it:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem\audio.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem\video.dl
----------------------------------
reboot normally, go to this website:

http://www.norman.com/microsites/nsic/
at the top click on submit file
put in the security code
you can use my e-mail address:
echoreply(at)hotmail.com
browse for the file on your computer
click the upload button
----------------------------------
lets do another online scan also (cookies arent anything to worry about)with another scanner:

Kaspersky virus scanner
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

click on online scanner, accept EULA, after it loads the database (may take awhile) click next
click Scan settings button
Under Scan options check standard and both Scan Archives and Scan Mail Bases, then ok
click on My computer link and scan will begin
after scan is done there is a option to Save report as a .txt file. Click that button. Copy and paste the report into your reply

hi E-literat,

thanks for the info. iam still not convinced about this:
ntos.exe
its part of the problem. that last scan mentioned smifraud, lets run smitfraudFix.

download smitfraud.exe to desktop:

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Open the SmitfraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

* Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
* This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
---------------
please post the .txt file from the smitfraud scan. in next reply

hi,

thanks for the info. nothing in the smitfraud report.
lets do this. again do it all safe mode, so might want to copy/paste this into notepad:

boot to safe mode, chose first option on list

look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall winbuyer (if present)

look for and delete these two: (we tried only ntos.exe before)
1) c00E4CE7.dat
2)ntos.exe
both are in the system32 dir.

---------------------
reboot normally, download pocket killbox to desktop just in case:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
we will try that to delete some files next

i dont like to keep trying app after app to remove something but we seem to be stuck on the same files. you might have something new.

try the safe mode delete if that dosnt work we will try killbox, then superantispyware.
also remember to use internet as little as possible and unplug modem.

By the way, I remember downloading Winbuyer last month, it promised to find the best price on products and to give me a $100 dollar coupon to shop with, but it was a scam. This is probally where I made my mastake!!!

hi E-literat,

crap, its still there. no i dont think winbuyer is causing all the problems. i saw there website: looks harmless, iam surprised they wouldnt have a uninstaller in the add/remove programs folder though. we can come back to that later.

we will use pocket killbox then do some stuff in safe mode again, you might want to copy/paste the safe mode stuff into notepad and save it to desktop.

have you gotton killbox yet, if not you can get it here:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
-----------------------------
start killbox.exe

Select the options: Replace on Reboot AND use dummy

copy paste this line into the field Full Path of File to Delete

C:\WINDOWS\system32\c00E4CE7.dat

then click the button with a white X on red background

When asked if you would like to Reboot, select >No.
Once again, in Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe

Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked to Reboot, select >Yes this time

your computer will reboot, during the reboot tap the f8 key so it starts in safe mode again.
once in safe mode. please run superantispyware once. and do this also:

using explorer(right click on start>explore) drill down to these >>> you want to delete whats >inside< the folder, not the folder itself<< delete what you can

C:\Windows\Temp\ (at the top you can use: Edit>select all File>delete

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (will dump all your cached internet content including cookies)

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

reboot normally and post a new hjt log please

Opened KillBox and followed directions on both files and click white X/ click yes on reboot/ message appeared saying: (Pending file rename operations registry data has been Removed by External Process (I click/O.K). program would not reboot. I don't know if this is related, but earlier I did a search on ntos.exe and this file was said th be in quarantine (ntos.exe.bac_a02680/in folder C:\Document and Settings\Compac_Owner\housecall6.6\Quaratine)..
How should I proceed?

shelf life
2007-04-23, 02:51
hi,

must be in quarantine from the online scans you did. bring up task manager by clicking ctrl-alt-del at same time. under the processes tab see if these are listed:
ntos.exe
c00E4CE7.dat
---------------------
do a online scan here:(unless this is the one you had problem with, cant remember)save and post report please.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?
----------------------
also do this:
go to start>run and type in regedit then click ok
windows registry will open up.
work your way down by clicking the (+) signs:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\[c00E4CE7.dat]

click on the folders on the left under the notify key
on the right see if you find the .dat file on the right side
if so:
click on the folder and at top click File>export
in the file name box call it reg.txt
in the save as type change to:"text file" (.txt)
save to desktop.
please post the saved reg text in next reply.

O.K self life,
Opened KillBox and follow directions, but tried it with each file separatly and received same message (Pending file rename operations registry data has been Removed by External Process) (I click/O.K). program would not reboot. So I close that program and manually rebooted in safe mode/Followed those directions/C:\Windows\Temp\ (at the top you can use: Edit>select all File>delete ( I found these files and deleted)

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (will dump all your cached internet content including cookies)

C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\

Local Settings found under only one user and no temp file in hat folder!

Reboot in normal mode.

hi E-literat,

very good.

might as well get the folder too, even though its probably empty now:

Start up Avenger once more
Check the 'Input script manually' button.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, copy, and paste the following:(including folder to delete: line)

Folder to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem

Then click on 'Done'.
Click the Traffic Light icon to start the script.
Then press OK at the prompts to reboot your PC.
----------------------------
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.

hi E-literat,

iam not sure about the syntax, try running this via avenger instead:

Folders to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem

in any case the folder should be empty, avenger did remove the two .dll's that where inside of it.
-----------------------
also see if you can find these two files (one we already did, just want to repeat it)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe

please upload it to this website, its not the same one we used before:
if its busy try at another time; use choose button to browse for files one at a time, then upload it. if anything is found you can copy/paste results into notepad and save it.

Hi shelf life,
Didn't quit understand the second portion of instructions, could you maybe explain more in detail?

the part about the files?
see if you can find them in the system32 dir on your computer and then upload them at that website, so they can be checked out.

avenger part (like you did before)

Start up Avenger once more
Check the 'Input script manually' button.
Click the Magnifying Glass icon.
In the box that opens, copy, and paste the following:(including folders to delete: line)

Folders to delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem

Then click on 'Done'.
Click the Traffic Light icon to start the script.
Then press OK at the prompts to reboot your PC.

hi E-literat,

looks like we are close to the end. you have both superantispyware and avg antispyware. dont need them both. both do the same thing. both are good. up to you which one to keep. both have real-time protection, except avg's guard becomes disabled after 30 days unless you purchase it, you can still update and scan with it though. superantispyware's real time protection dosnt become disabled. i would remove one via the add/remove programs panel, then reboot computer.
--------------------
so they dont interfere with hjt please disable any realtime protection thats running, like spybots tea timer, avg antispyware guard or superantispyware.
if running you would find the icon by the clock. you can exit the program by clicking on the icon.

once disabled:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked

O.K I uninstalled AVG at add and remove programs/disabled Superantispyware and Avast, right now as I type this I realize you didn't tell me to disable anti-virus (LOL!).Scan.exe,found all except F2-REG:system.ini:UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntos.exe/fixed all checked/turned off system restore and Reboot/Turned on system restore and Reboot.
Did I make a mistake turning anti virus off?

hi E-literat,

thanks for the info. dont worry about turning the AV off. i've never known it to interfere with hjt. sounds like you are good to go now.
did you at one time have symantec or norton antivirus? look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall anything symantec or norton or live update. you use avast now as your AV.
iam only referring to symantec/norton antivirus and not any other product you might have from them. (only need one antivirus) if you are not sure dont uninstall it.
looks like some (norton) left overs in the log.

Hi shelf life,
Yes I had Norton Anti-Virus,and one day I looked at my system tray and notice the icon wasn't there.Come to find out that it was disabled and I couldn't enable it,that's when I noticed that I was infected (pop-ups/warnings/loss of performance). In an attempt to get protection and control, I uninstalled Norton and installed Avast. I'm not an expert, but it seem as though the virus had got into my computer, turned Norton off and had control of my browser and my security settings. I had never seen anything like this before and I was lost!Yes I uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus, but still have these in my programs Live Reg/Live Update/and Norton Personal Firewall, at the time I tried to uninstall but was unable, (do you think this Firewall is still active? Should I use Microsoft's Firewall?).

hi E-literat,

it seem as though the virus had got into my computer, turned Norton off and had control of my browser and my security settings

this is very possible, virus/malware can terminate AV/firewalls etc.
-----------------------------
do you still have a subscription with norton?

you could uninstall/reinstall the norton suite you have. i have never had a all in one suite from norton so i dont know if its possible to uninstall the antivirus but keep the firewall? i suppose if you see them both listed in add/remove list then it is possibe.

norton does make a automated uninstaller for their products.
you could use that after removing what you can via add/remove programs
panel then just go with avast and windows firewall or zone alarm free version.
up to you. see this link

Hello shelf life,
Norton came on my computer pre-installed (with a trail period).Recently my job offered it thru our IT department, and that is what I had running (maybe it wasn't installed correct?). Right now I'm leaning toward leaving Avast running, and use the download Norton removal tool (let me research that question. Do you know of a place I could research, on which I may base my decision?

Thank you,
E-literat

hi E-literat,

i dont know what it is you want to research. you can keep or uninstall norton and go with avast. One isnt better than the other. avg antivirus is another free choice.
norton antivirus is probably active on your computer, you only need one antivirus, so one of them has to go. we can get you another (free) firewall.

whatever you do, use the uninstaller in the add/remove programs panel to remove stuff first before using the norton removal tool.

Hi shelf life,
O.K uninstalled Avast/reinstalled Norton Anti-Virus and configured/turn on Firewall (made password protected)/turn Windows Firewall on and Rebooted.

hi E-literat,

ok.

turn on Firewall (made password protected)/turn Windows Firewall
just like antivirus, you only need one firewall. more is not better than one in this case.
if that norton suite includes a firewall then it probably turned off windows fw automatically. you can check in the "security center" start>settings>control panel> security center.
windows fw should be off, if not and your using norton fw, you can turn windows fw off.
