View Full Version : CmdService removal help?
Hi,
I've got a Win2K workstation that has Command Service on it. I updated Spybot and it finds three instances of registry entries, but can't fix them because they are in memory. When I say "yes" to let it run on startup, I get the same result in that it can't fix it because it's in memory.
The registry entries it is flagging are:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet001\Services\cmdService
and the same as above except for ControlSet002 and CurrentControlSet
We're running Symantec Antivirus Corporate and his machine has the current (12/21/05) definitions.
Here's the HiJackThis log:

Hi, thanks for helping me out.
Here's the new log. I noticed a couple of things:
1) After the Win restart after the first fix check I did not find the folder in C:\WINNT that you instructed me to delete. Folder options were set to show hidden folders.
2) I noticed that after the second Fix Checked for the 023 command.exe, that it still shows up in a new HJT scan.
3) Spybot is still finding Command Service.

Hi
Fix these two items with hijackthis
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NewFrn] C:\WINNT\newfrn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adtech2006] c:\windows\adtech2006a.exe
=============
repeat the delete a file on reboot using hijackthis tools for that same file
if you cannot find it your not pasteing the path and file into the file name box
C:\WINNT\RWQgTHViaW5za3k\command.exe
as instructed, restart the PC set windows to show hidden files and Folders then delete the folder
Set windows to show hidden extensions file's and folder's.
click for> instructions<. (http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html)
Then fix that 020 with hijackthis by placeing a check next to it then clicking fix checked
O23 - Service: Command Service (cmdService) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\RWQgTHViaW5za3k\command.exe
Ok, was able to delete the folder ok, and did as was told. Now I notice:
1) The HJT log still shows the command.exe (file missing) 023 entry, even though I checked it and told HJT it to fix it. I went back to verify that the folder indeed is gone, and didn't see it.
2) On the User account on this machine (fixes were done on the administrator account) I get an error: "vcMain.exe Unable to locate dll mscore.dll" on startup. This does not happen when I'm on the administrator account
Otherwise everything looks much better. No pop-ups.

Lets try this, in hijackthis > config > msie tools delete an an service, paste or type in
cmdService
then click ok
Hopefully that will delete it .
(fixes were done on the administrator account) I get an error: "vcMain.exe Unable to locate dll mscore.dll" on startup.
log into that account make and post a hijackthis log
Ok, I got rid of the cmdService service. I had to disable it in the Services control panel first, and then delete it using HJT and restart.
Still getting the vcMain.exe dll message as mentioned above.

Looks good except I dont see that those onlines where used , Its important especialy for norton users to occasionaly get other opinions.
Are those free online scans available in a networked version?
I manage about 40 computers here and I use need a solution that updates automatically without user intervention, which is what Norton Enterprise version does for me.
If it's something that I can "set and forget" on each workstation that would be doable.
Thanks for all your help!

Possibly make it a routine required task for each user do do so on there own.
In the future If you need to post logs for other's pc be sure to mention the fact.
