Problems, Please Help

Hello, thanks for this forum, it is a wonderful resource.

I am having problems with my computer that started about a week or so ago, right after my last windows update it seems. When I restart my computer it takes forever to get to the log on screen, what used to take a minute or so takes 15-20 minutes. Several programs will not open up when called for (they show as running processes in the task manager, but either they hang and stop responding or they do not open at all), the add/remove programs window will not seem to populate, I waited about 20 minutes before I got frustrated and shut it off. I had thought I would just restore to a point prior to the trouble starting, but the restore wizard won't start. The icon for my C drive no longer looks like the other drives on my computer as can be seen here http://www.naturecoastphotography.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/Book_Page53.jpg I don't think this is a problem cause it's been like that for awhile, and not caused any issues that I could see, but thought I would mention it. Aside from the windows update, the only thing I've done is to update Java which also happened last week. I ran spybot search and destroy after updating it and it found a smitfraud tool bar, it appears to have fixed it though cause it doesn't show up again on subsequent scans.

Thank you, I was able to get system restore to load by letting it dit all night, and was then able to restore to a point when there were no problems. I personally think there was a problem with the java update or the windows genuine advantage program that installed last time auto updates updated. Either way, I didn't allow java to update and didn't allow the genuine advantage to install and haven't had any problems since.
