Hi, can you please help me? I've been trying to solve this problem on my own but I can't seem to get rid of it.
I got a malware/virus via yahoo messanger. The quicknews info website became my homepage and I can't change it back. Also whenever I run AVG, there's always 2 infected objects that show up - explore.exe and svchost32.exe. The worm is Worm/VB.ARW
Below is my HijackThis log. Please help! Thanks :)
PS. I erased the line about quicknews info in this HijackThis log but it comes up everytime I restart the PC

If you need help, let's proceed, you have a nasty trojan running from here:

Before we start, you have HijackThis installed twice:

Let's try to kill it like this and please follow the directions carefully:
1) Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
2) Download and run ATF-Cleaner according to these directions:

3) Now to be sure I want you to navigate to here:
C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\lee\LOCALSETTINGS~1\Temp\ <<< make sure that Temp file is empty. Do not delete the folder, just the contents.
Restart the computer and post that report from SDFix, a new HJT log and any comments you think will help, we have more to do.

I did what you said but when I restarted the computer the quicknew info webpage still appeared. Also my task manager has been "disabled by the adminstrator" even though I didn't.

Thanks for returning your information. We are making progress but still have work to do. It appears you did not clean out this folder:
C:\DOCUME~1\lee\LOCALS~1\Temp\IEXPLORE.EXE <<< IEXPLORE.EXE running from a TEMP folder is a problem. I will post instructions again and it is very important that you follow them and in the posted order.
I need to tell you that you are getting infected as we go, this is a new infections:

1) Thanks to LonnyBJones and anyone else who helped with this fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Once the desktop loads post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log in the forum please.
(Save those reports and logs until we finish)
2) Hit Ctrl, ALT and Delete at the same time to open Task Manager. Choose the Processes Tab, locate, highlite and end process on:

3) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
4) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
(It is important that you delete the contents of the temp folder in red. (NOT THE FOLDER)
C:\DOCUMENTS & SETTINGS~1\lee\LOCALSETTINGS~1\Temp\
(It is very important that you look for these files in the SYSTEM folder. DO NOT go into the System32 folder!!!
C:\WINDOWS\system\svchost.exe <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\system\svchost32.exe <<< delete that file
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post the report from Fixwareout and a new HJT log.

1) Make sure all files and folders are unhidden.
2) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Follow the directions in the link to download install, update and run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Make sure you delete or at least guarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.
5) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Post the AVG Anti-Spyware scan report and a new HJT log.

Whoops, sorry, didn't realize that AVG antispyware was different from the AVG that I have right now.
I followed your instructions and got rid of the "O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{645B1177-7B8B-4C09-AD0D-550478E863BB}: NameServer = 85.255.115.38 85.255.112.103" line. But after 30 minutes on the internet this line appeared again at the HijackThis log so I had to tick off this line again and restart the PC. Does that mean that I'm vulnerable to this hijack? How can I avoid this?

The Ukrainian hackers send their junk in all kinds of combinations and you had a very bed infection. Sometimes we have to run Fixwareout (of which it is a part) a couple of times and remove the line several times to get rid of it. Often the DNS has to be flushed. It seems you have it right now and your HJT log looks good. I would appreciate a look at your uninstall list like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Then to get rid of the nasties in your C:\System Volume Information\_restore (System Restore) do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I am seeing your antivirus program being AVG Anti-Virus and your firewall being Zone Alarm. You also need a realtime spyware program, see what the experts advise in the links I am about to post.
This is Very Important. The next thing you need to do is download and install SP2. Without it you can not get critical updates from Microsoft, see this:

and without them there is no way you can keep the computer safe if you go online.
AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Let's run Fixwareout again, then remove the line with HJT and then do this:
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

I see no other problems but do not know all of your programs, I suggest you look and investigate any you do not know and uninstall any you are done with.
