Hello,

I am working on a friends computer as a favor. I think there was some pretty nasty stuff on it. I hope its all gone. I'm wondering how bad the malware was, and if their security as far as financial info was in danger of being compromised.

Any advice, or pointing me in the direction of more info, so I can learn more would be great.

I followed instructions in this forum, here are the results...
Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the forum, you have some nasty stuff on your computer, see this:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/virus.aspx?id=61569
A trojan called Virtumonde/Vundo
http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/ipwins/
and a bunch of other junk I can't identify. I want to be sure you have read these instructions:
"BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at own risk.
We are going to start with a multipurpose tool that will clean much of the junk if not all, but with this tool as with all automated tools, there is always a slight risk, please be aware of that as you proceed, and follow the directions carefully.

Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Aurelius

PSKelly,

Thanks so much for getting back to me with help.

I have done a few things since last night. I uninstalled Java and downloaded and installed the latest version, from the links in this forum.

I ran AVG and Ad-Aware and they found and dealt with some issues...

Today I followed your instructions, here are the results:

"Catherine" - 07-04-19 17:49:15 Service Pack 2

Thanks for returning your information. Combofix removed a lot but we still have a long way to go. I would like to suggest you keep this computer offline unless troubleshooting until we get it cleaned. Follow the instructions in the numbered order.

1) TeaTimer will block changes that must be made, turn it off until we are done:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

2) Start > Control Panel > Add remove programs, and uninstall:
PuritySCAN By OIN, OIN or OuterInfo or anything else you know does not belong there.

3) Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

4) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

5) We need end process on: C:\Program Files\Common Files\{4896E7FC-0AEC-1033-0510-040203200001}\Update.exe
Follow the directions in this link.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#HTProcessManager

6) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

7) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Thanks again. I followed these instructions. I mentioned previously i had run Adaware and AVG, perhaps they got rid of some of this stuff...

Vundofix didn't find anything. So there was nothing to fix, and it did not produce a log.

update.exe in step 5 was not there. I think I deleted that with AVG.

Step 8... the file and folder you mention were not there.

Here is a fresh log.

Thanks again.

PSKelly,

Here is the log from the last time I ran AVG last night/ early this morning ... after I saw this I uninstalled all of the old Java versions and installed the latest.

BTW, I am downloading everything a on Mac and transferring the files using a USB flashdrive. So I have not been online in a few days. I did however download all the updates for all the AV/ Anti Spyware apps on wednesday.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the help.

Good morning, the HJT log looks great this morning:bigthumb: I will suggest that it is common knowledge the Java updater:
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe << is buggy and rarely works right. I would suggest you turn it off to save resources and update manually in your control panel. You make the call and here is some information: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000020700.xml

Do you know why this is in the log >> R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0...ir.asp?Ext=mim ? If not, use HJT to get rid of it.

For your information, I see programs you are starting everytime you boot that you may not need and can start manually in All Programs when you do need the program to run, see this information:
http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/startup.htm

See these instructions concerning those infections in Java cache in the antivirus report. http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virusproblem/howtoclean/cleanjavacache.shtml

If possible, I would appreciate a look at a scan result from AVG Anti-Spyware which you have installed. Please use the instructions in the link and delete or quarantine anything it finds.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

So...all I need to those scan results and your feedback, how is the computer running now.

Thanks...Phil

Phil,

I did remove that line:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0...ir.asp?Ext=mim

I also disabled Java updater (I always wondered what that was!)

I went through the startup programs, and disabled many of them.

I looked in the Java cache folder... and there are some sub folders, but everything is empty, since it was freshly installed.

OK... so I updated AVG Anti-Spyware and followed the instructions and ran it... and after 47 minutes... the computer just shut off. One moment it is running, next moment screen is black and computer is silent. I checked for a report after booting back up... but there wasnt one. Before it crashed it did find 11 items. I don't remember what they were.

It is a Dell laptop, plugged into power, and I have set up a power profile where everything is set to never. There is no connection to the internet, no ethernet cable plugged in, and I disabled wireless connection in Network control panel. This had happened to me a few times before while running some of these scans, but that was before I had gotten help from you.

Once again, thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. You guys are really cool for helping people like this.

~Mark

Sounds good, wonder why AVG Anti-Spyware shut down? You had that program on the computer. If you don't own it then once the trial is over it needs to be turned off or uninstalled. Let's do this:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

See what the experts have to say, but if you do not own AVG Anti-Spyware you need to have a good spyware program that runs in realtime. Here is one that is available free:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Run the computer for 48 hours and then post to let me know all is well. That being the case, I'll close your topic at that point.

Thanks...pskelley

Phil,

Thanks once again for all your help.:bigthumb:

I did all the things you suggested, cleared and set new restore point, read all the links. Downloaded, installed, updated and ran Windows Defender. It did not find anything.

Then I tried to run AVG Anti-Spyware in Safe Mode. I went and made some tea, when I came back... the computer had shut down again. Before I left to make tea, I did see "Adware.PurityScan" was found.

I hadn't done any surfing, and only went online to download updates, and Defender. I surfed a bit today in Firefox with no problems.

Launched IE and wham, pop-ups redirected to a site with "zango" in the url, and dialog box pop-ups from IE that say."Important Yahoo message received" with an ok button. I ALT+F4 those.

I just remembered that, when I had ran Panda Online scanner before my first post, that the computer had shut down then as well, after about an hour of scanning. the Trend Micro Scanner did a full scan.

If this was my computer I would zero fill and re-install, but that is my last resort. It is friends of the family, with 3 users and data all over the place. LOL.

What should I do next?

Mark

Then I tried to run AVG Anti-Spyware in Safe Mode. I went and made some tea, when I came back... the computer had shut down again. Before I left to make tea, I did see "Adware.PurityScan" was found.
I would need to see the scan, exactly where the item is located.

1) Post an uninstall list, like this:
Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

with 3 users
If you have multiple user accounts on the computer I need to see HJT logs from each user while signed in to there account. Please mark the logs plainly.

2) Let me see a BlackLight scan result in case their is a hidden rootkit:
Please download F-Secure BlackLight Beta:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml

Save it to its own folder in the Desktop
Double-click blbeta.exe to run the program
Click : Scan
A list of all items found is created

The list is in the BlackLight folder on the Desktop, and named fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (xxxxxxx are numbers).

Please provide the log created by BlackLight in your next reply.

Restart and post the HJT logs from multiple users, the uninstall list, AVG Scan results showing the Adware.PurityScan item and the results of the BlackLight rootkit scan.

Thanks

Phil,

I didn't realize the users would all need to be scanned... oops. The plot thickens.

AVG Anti-Spyware crashes before completion every time, so no logs are created as far as I know... I looked in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports and it was empty.

The Blacklight Beta scan did not find anything, log is included below.

Here are the other logs and list you asked for:

AVG Anti-Spyware crashes before completion every time, so no logs are created as far as I know... I looked in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports and it was empty.Uninstall that program, we may try another one later?

USER 1

Not what is causing our problem, just for your information.

Rest of the HJT log looks clean.

USER 2 <<< this is the problem, I would hazzard a guess that this is the user that got infected.

Make sure all files and folders are enabled:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Use one or more of these free online scanners:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
and scan this file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe
post the information, do nothing else, it may be valid.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway
(same information, optional removal)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ozen] C:\Program Files\Common Files\?ystem\n?pdb.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ioqf] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\ioqf\ioqfm.exe G
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Aida] "C:\WINDOWS\System32\RACLE~1\notepad.exe" -vt ndrv

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(all three are PurityScan/OIN, you will be able to tell them and they must be deleted)

C:\Program Files\Common Files\?ystem\ <<< delete that folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\COMMON~1\ioqf\ <<< delete that folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\RACLE~1\ <<< delete that file

Run ATF-Cleaner while signed in to the user.

Balance of that HJT log looks fine, at least now you know who is getting you infected.

UNINSTALL LIST

SideStep <<< Adware...I strongly suggest you uninstall that one.

Viewpoint Media Player <<< junk
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.

Once you have remove that junk in user 2, post a new HJT log after a reboot for that user and let me know about any issues at that point.

Thanks

I followed instructions:

I used all the services to scan the file, all scans came up negative. It looks like the file is ok.

I deleted the lines using HJT.

these 2 folders are not there. the other folder I deleted
C:\Program Files\Common Files\?ystem\ <<< delete that folder
C:\WINDOWS\System32\RACLE~1\ <<< delete that file

I ran ATF cleaner.

Im going to uninstall those other apps you mentioned.

After rebooting with user 2, I was still getting pop-ups... "Congratulations you have won a Nintendo Wii"

With User1 (the user we worked on the most)... i noticed during 015 Trusted Zone Enumeration, it takes awhile, 20-30 seconds to scan. I only noticed this because User 2 and 3 HJT scans happened instantly, and it seemed odd.

Sidestep will not allow me to uninstall it, i tried in safemode, user 1 is has admin privileges. Ohhh look at that... everyone has admin privileges. Again... here I would like to remind you, this is not my computer.

Sidestep has a program group in program files menu, the installer in there doesn't work either.

Wow... I don't know what to say LOL.

What is the next step?

Again thanks so much for all your help.

Let me just first say that it is not my computer either (who is the owner). If no one is responsible for keeping it clean, then why am I cleaning it? Sidestep is very adware orientated and it may also generate popups. Would you please instruct the other users that there is no such thing as free. When they download this junk that says it is free, it will have a price to pay and often popups or tracking junk is that price.
I have done about all I can do unless you can come up with some suggestions. Sidestep is not a DPF, it has been installed, I suggest you sign in as administrator and try again. It may be that someone has tried to uninstall it incorrectly and it will need to be installed again and then uninstalled. You may also need to edit it from your registry, Trend Micro has those instructions:
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/grayware/ve_graywareDetails.asp?GNAME=ADW_SIDESTEP.A&VSect=Td
If you do this, make sure you backup the registry before working in it:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=68037
Here's the Google on removal: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=how+to+uninstall+sidestep&btnG=Google+Search

Another suggestion I have would be to get rid of all aol seach junk like this:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML
and get your self a good popup blocker, I get popups also if I don't block them. I suggest this one:
http://toolbar.google.com/T4/index_pack.html
If you install it, make sure you install the basic toolbar/popup blocker, do not install all of the other junk they want you to check which is eye candy and resource waters. Once installed, in options, make sure the blocker is turned on and see how it goes.

I would like to look at one more combofix log:
Thanks to sUBs and anyone else who helped with this fix.

Download ComboFix from Here (http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) or Here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your Desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks

Aurelius

Hello again,

I followed the instructions and edited the registry, and for awhile I though I had gotten rid of the pop-ups. But I just took longer for them to appear.

I then went to the Sidestep website and reinstalled the Sidestep Toolbar... and then uninstalled it again. It reported that it successfully uninstalled, and it didnt seem to leave any folders behind.

I uninstalled all the AOL search bars.

They have a yahoo search bar, which has a pop-up blocking feature, and I know that they use Yahoo, so I left it. Is the Google Toolbar better? Should I uninstall Yahoo toolbar and install Google bar instead?

I don't have any other ideas. It is the same pop-ups... "Important message from Yahoo" that I described before.

The call is yours, if you think there is something else we can do, cool... if not and the best thing to do is reformat and reinstall, that is what I would do... I'm out of ideas.

Would it be OK for me to PM you?

Here are logs you requested, thanks again for your help and persistence.

Mark

Let me first just ask how you can say:

They have a yahoo search bar, which has a pop-up blocking feature, and I know that they use Yahoo, so I left it.
and then turn around and say:

It is the same pop-ups... "Important message from Yahoo" that I described before.
I can tell you that I will allow nothing Yahoo on any computer I own. Why do you think the popups are about Yahoo? Why not email them and ask them how to stop the junk?
Smitfraud and Winfixer is installed by hackers. At least we know where that stuff is coming from.
I can not make your decisions for you, but reformating is not always a bad thing. I am out of ideas, we can run more scans but I believe it would be a waste of your time and mine.

I can provide you with a good registry cleaner and instructions for using it if you wish.

Let me know. You can remove all tools we downloaded. You can keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish.

Thanks

Duh... yeah, that kind of crept into my head as I was typing it.
I've been using Yahoo webmail for years, but I don't download any toolbars or junk like that. I am going to uninstall all that stuff, and see if it helps.

I'm going to recommend they use Firefox, which has Google search built in.

Yes, I'm interested in the info regarding the registry cleaning and instructions on the best way to do that.

Thanks again for all the help.

I use Internet Explorer 7 myself with no issues, I also have Firefox and have not developed the habit of using it much. I believe you will need this:
http://www.google.com/tools/firefox/toolbar/FT3/intl/en/
to get the blocker, make sure you skip all the junk they try to push on you that is not needed. You know gmail is available free now?

Phil,

what was the registry cleaner you were going to recommend?

Thanks,

Mark

http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=68037

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

Phil,

Thanks so much for all your help. It has been an enlightening experience.

We have decided to go with the format/ re-install option, and get a fresh start.

What apps/tools in your opinion would you recommend or consider essential for keeping safe on the internet? Would you run more than one anti-spyware app? How often would you do a full scan?

Thanks again for your time, advice and expertise.

Mark

I Mark, in my post #10 I posted links from expert advisors. Once you read those, if you still have questions, let me know. I will tell you this, I have three computers and here is what I run:

McAfee VSO: about to drop them due to the hugh amount of junk they are trying to dump on folks now, getting as bad as Symantec.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=review+antivirus+programs&btnG=Google+Search <<< see what is being said.

I run free Zone Alarm and these freeware programs:
