hi Nozzy,
the tool for smitfraud dosnt run on vista. you can try this commercial app, but no guarnantees. down at bottom.
you can try this first:
i would do this in safe mode, looks like you already know how to get there:
might want to copy/paste this into notepad and save it somewhere so you can read it in safe mode:
-------------------
once in safe mode:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {a7882806-1dd1-11b2-b700-85eea76f9436} - C:\Windows\system32\UKhgh5mm.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)
to show all files in vista:
Click Start.
Open Computer.
Press the ALT key.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
see if you can find and delete these two files in the system32 dir. vista requires permissions to do this:
klknslgt.exe
UKhgh5mm.dll
------------------------
this is actually for XP, but should be very close to vista, if you are not sure of the path dont delete:
using explorer(right click on start>explore) drill down to these >>> you want to delete whats >inside< the folder, not the folder itself<< delete what you can
C:\Windows\Temp\ (at the top you can use: Edit>select all File>delete
C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ (will dump all your cached internet content including cookies)
C:\Documents and Settings\-Your Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
C:\Documents and Settings\-Any other users Profile-\Local Settings\Temp\
go to start>run and type in:
cleanmgr then click ok, chose option to clean all files on computer.
--------------------------------
reboot normally, first stop:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
download, install, update scan (follow wizard)
see if things improve.
---------------------------------
shelf life
After doing all of the above my problem still persists.
The only thing I could not do was locate UKhgh5mm.dll
Otherwise, I did everything else mentioned.
The only problem I'm experiencing is have the "personal security center" balloon pop up on my taskbar 10 minutes after I log on. It doesn't seem to have installed anything else that I can see. It just keeps coming up as a yellow triangle with an exclamation point on my taskbar. if I click it then it goes away and brings up the fake security window but returns 10 minutes later.
At one point i did install Ultimate defender unknowing that it was malware but I believe that was removed.
Is there anything else I can do?

hi Nozzy,
run hjt again in normal mode and save/post the log.
also copy/paste the last super antispyware log:
if you launch the main menu, go to the preferences button then log tab at top
click on last log, then click the view log button
it opens in a text file, you can save it somewhere and copy/paste it here.
------------------------------
you might try another malware scanner like sunbelts counter spy or pc tools spyware doctor (both work on vista) but the main removal tool (smitfraudFix) dosnt run on vista.

Upon scanning again I seem to have fixed the issue! Thanks a bunch shelf life!
and here are the logs anyways.

hi Nozzy,
ok good, lets make sure its really gone first.
so super antispyware and defender's real time protection dont interfere with hjt i would do this step in safe mode. you can disable super antispyware by exiting with the bug looking icon by the clock if its running. windows defender iam not sure about other than stopping the service but there must be another way to deactivate it, maybe the security center? if you know tell me.
-----------------
once in safe mode:
scan with HJT, put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click fix checked.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [klknslgt.exe] C:\Windows\System32\klknslgt.exe
then look for it again in the system32 dir (klknslgt.exe) and delete it.
while in safe mode, run superantispyware again.
-----------------
reboot normally, rescan with hjt and check the log for the above 04 item. if you see that above 04 item in the log:
close hjt, restart it, click on "open misc tools section" then "delete a file on reboot" copy/paste the path below into the window or browse for the file, click open
C:\Windows\System32\klknslgt.exe
at the prompt to reboot select yes.
------------------
after the reboot rescan and post new hjt log

I scanned and fixed in Safe mode and when I logged on normally it was not there any longer. Thanks.
