View Full Version : Help needed with Vundo, Winfixer who knows what else
Hello, I'm desperately looking for help with regaining control of my laptop. About a week ago my Norton started showing a lot of infected files , at the same time my hard drive started spinning every couple seconds and web pages started opening randomly.
I've ran numbers of online scans some of them found and removed many adware programs.
Here is the incomplete list:
Adware.Purityscan
Trojan.Vundo (removed with vudofix, probably not completely )
Trojan.Horse
Infostealer
Winfixer
Win32.Agent.AT
My laptap is more stable right now but IE opens web pages sporadically and Spyboot scan finds Win32.Agent.At every couple days.
I'm Running XP Sp2
eTrust scanner shows nothing and Trand Micro found Winfixer

Hi, welcome to Safer Networking forums!
You have a very old variant of vundo there.. :)
Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from here (http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip).
Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from here. (http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe)
Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe
In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.
Once you see this screen click on each instance of avap.dll once and then click the kill button.
After you have killed all of the avap.dll's under winlogon click ok.
Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of avap.dll then click the kill button. Click on the Threads tab at the top.
Once you have done that click ok again.
Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.
O2 - BHO: PsapiAnalyzer Object - {125399A6-E13D-42CE-A021-7F9069A79440} - c:\windows\fonts\avap.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: avap - c:\windows\fonts\avap.dll
Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.
________________
*Open notepad.
Copy and paste the text inside the Code Box below into Notepad
Choose File > Save As and under "Save as type", choose "All Files".
Type fix.reg in the File name and save it to your desktop.
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{125399A6-E13D-42CE-A021-7F9069A79440}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.
Close notepad. Make sure that all windows are closed.
Find the fix.reg file on your desktop.
Double click it.
It will then ask if you want the file merged to your registry.
Answer Yes.
_________________
Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.
Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box
c:\windows\fonts\avap.dll
Click the red circle with the white x and allow your computer to reboot.
After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.
So far it's much better, Thank you , here is the log after the steps.
I've still got IE window opened without even lunching IE.

Hi,
I'm deeply sorry for the delay in responding, I could've sworn I posted a reply before...
Thanks again, it's much better ,so far IE stopped opening new windows, my hard drive LED still blinks every second or so. Don't have log from AVG because it didn't find anything and the report was not available.
Did this happen only when you got the infections? It could also mean that the hard drive is busy, perhaps with a lot of the programs running on your machine.
*Since HijackThis creates backups of all it fixes and we want them safe and secured should they be required later, we need to move HijackThis to a permanent folder.
a.) While in your Desktop, right click in the background > Go to New > click Folder > Name the Folder HJT
b.) After creating the folder, find your HijackThis.exe (it looks like a detonator with some dynamites). Then, drag and drop that file to the new folder you created.
*We need to temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer, it may stop our fix.
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
- Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
- Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
- Open Spybot S&D
- Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
- Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
- If your firewall raises a question, say OK
- Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
- Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
*Open HijackThis > choose Scan Only > Place a checkmark in the boxes beside these entries in bold.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1557B435-8242-4686-9AA3-9265BF7525A4} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3F9D0C61-737D-44D1-BD80-91AF857061CC} - (no file)
Close your browsers and all open windows except for HijackThis, then click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.
*Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
Please post a fresh HijackThis log along with the kaspersky scan log.
Here is the Kaspersky log and HT log, you are right the drive LED could be just my programs running . I've used filemon and it looks like those are valid requests, before it was just a lot of IE . Overall my laptop is doing great and no more popups.
Thanks again

Hi,
Congratulations! Your log looks clean!
Configure Windows Xp to hide system files:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Do not show hidden files and folders.
Check the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More options tab
Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security.
Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these.
