Hello Anyone,
I have just installed Sptbot S/D.
When I ask for a scan,I get an error note, saying I "need to install, the detection update first by using the integrated update,or the, manual updater"

I have installed a few[I think],but when I go for a scan, then the error note keeps coming back.

Has anyone got any advice,on how to get a scan working, and have I got any protection at the moment?

I have a laptop, with wireless connection, and only use it for general surfing.

Thank You
Kathy

Please close Spybot if you haven't closed it since downloading it,then reopen it and then click Help->About.What does it say below Spybot-Search & Destroy 1.4?Does it say Latest Detection Update,or does it say No detection update installed(or something similar)?
Also, please see this tutorial on how to update:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/howto/update.html

Hello Zenobia,
It says
Latest detection update 2007-05-02

I have tried to do a scan, but nothing seems to happen, like running through the files and things.

All I'm worried about really is,is Spybot working, and if so, then I can donate, gladly.
Must thank you for your reply,it was nice of you.

And do you still get the error message about having to install the detection updates first?

Dear Zenobia,
It's lovely of you to help me.

YES;still getting the errot message.

Do you think I might have to uninstall, and try again.
Has anyone else experienced my difficulties.?

Hoping,it can be sorted.

High Regards
Kathy

PS,
When I got my laptop,it had 6,months of Norton installed, which has just ran out,but is still on my machine (acer)
Would this have anything to do with things?

Yes,a few people have experienced this problem in the past. This is probably not related to Norton. Please give the instructions in this post a try,and see if it helps:

Are you in need of an antivirus? The reason I ask is that there are a couple free ones available,if you aren't planning on renewing your subscription to Norton. If so,let me know, and I'll post info about them. :)

Hello Zenobia,
Think I've sorted my problem[thanks to you]
I stared anew,and it works now,[scans]I think?

When you say,you know about Anti-Virus,well does not Spybot S/D
protect me in that way?
but tell me what they are,if you would.

Sorry for reply delay,I've been on a weeks holiday

Hope you had a good holiday.Glad you got the Spybot problem sorted :)
Spybot is more antispyware oriented,so you should still have an up-to-date antivirus installed.
Here are a couple of the antiviruses:
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v
Avast:
http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG
Antivir:
http://www.free-av.com/
It'd be best if you pick out just one of those,if you decide on any of them.Have a look here, for a further explanation:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000031316555206

I'll put up Symantec's page with removal instructions,in case you decide on another antivirus:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2005092709200113?Open&src=symsug_us
There's a link at the bottom to their removal tool, for if anyone runs into trouble when uninstalling.
