View Full Version : Adware Problems (Purityscan & Others)

2007-05-05, 00:51
Hi. This is my second time on this forum, this time with a new problem.

Yesterday, I was playing a game offline, when Norton minimized the game and warned me of having an infection that it couldn't delete. I wasn't online browsing sites or emails, so I have no idea how I managed to download this pesky problem. I thought I managed to successfully delete it this morning, since I'm not receiving popups anymore (They were actually opening separate Internet Explorer browsers with sites. Not the typical popup screen). BUT, now Internet Explorer seems to be freezing after several minutes of use. When I attempt to close it by Ctrl+Alt+Delete, everything freezes. I can't even click on the Start menu.

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. My Norton Log Viewer is showing the following:

Adware.Purityscan http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2003-090516-2325-99

Infostealer http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2000-122016-0558-99

Trojan.Dropper http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2002-082718-3007-99

Downloader also attempted downloading twice on May 1st, but was "Repaired" by Norton.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner Results:

If I pasted anything incorrectly above, or you need more info, please tell me.

BTW- Another problem that i'm having since I messed around this morning trying to fix the adware problem, is that when I type, it seems to skip some letters occasionally (It's not typo's. It does it even when I hit the keys on the keyboard), and I have to backspace and type it again. Example: Just before, I tried typing "focus" and it wound up as "foc". I think it's only doing it in Internet Explorer, but i'm not sure.

That, and on some websites such as Yahoo, it's showing up "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" in place of the banner/ad spaces.

I appreciate any help. I tried explaining it as best as I could, but i'm not thinking clearly at this point...this has been stressing me out since yesterday now.

Hi again. I don't want this to look like i'm purposely bumping this thread, but just after I submitted this thread, I started receiving multiple warnings from Norton about a "Trojan.Vundo"

How do I get rid of this also? I saw it mentioned in another thread on here as being hard to get rid of. Sheesh! My luck keeps getting worse.

Welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

If you have waited FOUR days for advice post here. http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=1137

I apologize that no one responded to your topic, all volunteers, we are busy trying to help as many folks as possible. That is why the link to post in after four days is pinned to the top of the forum, to catch folks so this does not happen. I do not see a lot in this HJT log, but Vundo is often a hidden. If you have not resolved you issues, please do this:

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it MX848.exe. The restart the computer and post the Uninstall list and a new HJT log. We should be able to see Vundo in the 02 BHO's and 020 Winlogon if it is present.
