Hi, having trouble getting rid of Smitfraud -- it keeps popping up in Spybot, and I've tried a few other measures, namely vundofix and smitfraudfix together with a range of other spyware removals (avg, defender, adaware), and I'm almost at my wits end! Any suggestions?

Here are the logs for hijackthis, vundofix and smifraudfix:

Welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

I understand you have done some of the above, but I want to make sure you saw all of the instructions, especially this one at this point:

Note: In notepad under Format, uncheck "Word Wrap" Produce all HJT logs like this, single spaced.
single-spaced - (of type or print) not having a blank space between lines
Once you have turned off "word Wrap" post a new HJT log and I will respond as soon as possible after that.

Thanks

Thanks for returning the information and you are infected with Vundo, Please notice the Vundofix tool is telling you that Java is out of date.

Java version is 1.5.0.3Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.
Java version is 1.5.0.6
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed

This is probably the reason you are infected, see this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Download the newest Java version and then uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.
Restart the computer so changes can go into effect.

Is your Spybot program up to date? This: Smitfraud-c.Toolbar888 see this information: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668

This is not your problem, Vundo is. Some information about the junk for your benefit:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

VundoFix is updated often, and we will not need Smitfraudfix. Delete both of those from your computer and please follow these directions carefully.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

(it is very important the next directions are followed if the fix cannot delete all of the Vundo files it finds)

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

There will be hidden files, but these are the Vundo files in the HJT log for your benefit:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstts.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwxxu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hqbxqrkt.dll

Thanks

A couple of questions that will help us later.

1) Are you aware this program is on your computer?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/PSIService.exe-16772.html

2) Do you know what this service is:
O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe
Google does not: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=AFSEGTGF+Windows+Service+&btnG=Google+Search
If you don't know, then use one or more of these free scans to find out if it is bad:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I've removed the old versions of java and downloaded the latest from sun - Is it 1.5.0.6? Vundofix is still making reference to it, but this should be the latest version.

Also downloaded the link for the latest vundofix, and removed it "successfully" (but I'm still getting popups for "winantivirus"), and have a new hijackthis log.

These two programs are news to me, I've never heard of them.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/star...exe-16772.html
O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe

I'm running Trend Micro PC-cillin, and its also been turning up a few trojans, one just came up with the following:
Infected file: C:\DOCUME~1\Bendoza\LOCALS~1\Temp\dsxjvqkk.dll
Virus name: TROJ_VBSTAT.A
Is this related?

Anyway, here are the logs. And thanks for all your assistance!

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback, I show this as the newest version of Java:
Java: Update 6 version 1 is now available
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
If you open your Java Console (little coffee cup in the Control Panel) then click the Update tab and Update now Java should find the newest version for you.

You have not removed all of the Vundo files, run the scan again, run it several times to be sure:
Watch for the junk in your HJT log, there will always be a BHO like this:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8114F47B-F609-4C4C-A34B-65B147C919B0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwxxu.dll
And a 020 Winlogon like this: O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxwxxu - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\byxwxxu.dll
If you have any problems removing it file, follow the directions at the end of the Vundofix and upload the file so it can be added to the fix. Usually, several hours after Atribune has it, it is added and the fix will remove it easily.

I need to know what this is, that is why I gave you the links to have it scanned:
O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe
Make sure all files and folders and enabled: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Upload that file and post the results for me.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe

Part of the Protexis copy protection and license management software. This will typically be installed by other software that uses this to protect itself from being illegally copied. This program is running on your computer, if you want it removed, tell me that.

Please read and follow the directions carefully...thanks.

Hi again. Having some trouble carrying out your instructions.

I've run vundo a few times and on two occassions it found files and removed them, but has been running clean the last few. Hijackthislog is still showing C:\WINDOWS\system32\byxwxxu.dll though. You mentioned uploading this to atribune by following directions at the end but I'm not sure what you meant. Vundofix just has a link to a paypal account for donations.

In regards to O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe, I've tried to run all three scanners, but none of them worked. Two said file size 0bytes, and one said that either a firewall or malware program was preventing the file from being uploaded. I tried emailing it to one of the scanners and turning the firewall off but that didn't work either. All files and folders are enabled.

In regards to C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe - I don't think I need this for anything.

Java is up to date.

Hope I haven't overlooked anything. Thanks. Ben

Well, not getting much help from you, so I will proceed like I think I should.

You mentioned uploading this to atribune by following directions at the end but I'm not sure what you meant. Vundofix just has a link to a paypal account for donations. Are you reading the same directions as I am? This information is right in the Vundofix instructions?

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com
Please understand it is you who is setting in front of that computer and not me. You also have the option to do this:
http://www.cyberwalker.com/faqs/how-tos/reinstall-faq.html
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/

Just let me know if you would prefer that route.

Before we start, I would you to know that this junk: C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe explained here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/PSIService.exe-16772.html
and in detail here: http://www.protexis.com/services/software_licensing.htm was placed on your computer by something you purchased to make sure you follow their licensing agreement, read it over. I consider it a deceptive practice, it may be illegal but the software you installed along with it may not work once this junk is removed. You get to make that call, I will show you how to remove the junk. You really need to read the EULA agreements carefully before you install stuff.
Please follow these directions carefully, the Vundo fix I am using must be done exactly as it is posted for it to work:

1) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

Wow, now i remember what it's like to have a computer running at normal speed! :)

Seems to have worked a treat.

I just had one problem with the "Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service". After finding out that the dsymn.exe line had reappeared in the hijackthislog and the file could not be deleted in explorer (file being used by another program), I realised that if i disabled the service, closed the service window and ran services.msc again, AFSEGTGF would somehow reset itself back to automatic. I repeated all the steps a few times to make sure I hadn't overlooked anything, but it doesn't seem to want to go away.

I think I can do without the PSIservice protexis licensing stuff. I can't think of anything important on my computer that needs this, so I'd rather just get rid of it completely.

Everything else was fine! Your help is appreciated.

Anyway, here are the logs.

Thanks for the feedback, and this item is still in the HJT log, thus still on your computer:
O23 - Service: AFSEGTGF Windows Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe

Understand that HJT is a process manager, when you remove an item with HJT it ends the process from running and if you go straight to the file you should be able to delete it.

1) Disable the item in Services

2) Use HJT to remove the item from your log

3) Navigate to that file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exe and delete it.

If that does not work try this:

1) Disable the item in Services

2) How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dsymn.exe
and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

If that does not work then try this:

1) Disable the item in Services

2) start the computer in safe mode:
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/safemode/

Once in Safe Mode navigate to that file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsymn.exeand delete it.

As soon as that Service and that file is gone, post a new HJT log, I have closing information you need.

Thanks...Phil
