View Full Version : MSN Messenger Virus
Hi there,
Just joined and glad I have hopefully found some help
My daughter was using MSN Messenger and unwittingly clicked on a link that was something to do with a photo. It started to send the link to everyone on her list and took over the computer to the point that all we could do was hit the turn off button.
I had the free Avast antivirus and have since upgraded to 2007 Nortons antivirus. I have managed to get the msn messenger to stop propagating the link messages by clearing the cache uninstalling, running spybot and trojan remover 6.6.0.
Nortons scan detects nothing but when you start the computer it blocks trojan Vundo. I googled it and found VundoFix.exe through nortons symantec web site. I run it and it doesn't find anything to remove.
I now have IE & Firefox opening web pages to WinAntivirus. This has only happened since I ran the Vundofix.exe
below is hijack this document.
Thanks for any help
Gavin

Hi gavin63
Rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe and post back a fresh HijackThis log, please :)
Hi
Thanks for the reply, when you say rename HiJack this as scanner.exe do you mean the actual program exe in the program file.
I may have sorted it out. For some reason when Nortons antivirus was installed Vundo trojan was not detected by Vundofix patch. I unistalled nortons ran the scan again and it detected around 5 files. I also ran trojan remover 6.6.0, spybot turned off system restore, restarted and scanned again. I am getting no indications of browser hijacks or msn messenger problems at the moment.
If you meant to rename the actual HiJackThis application I will and then rerun another scan and post just to ensure that I have it sorted out.
Thanks for any help
Gavin
Hi
Yes, rename hijackthis application to scanner, please :) Like this:
C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe -> C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\scanner.exe
"spybot turned off system restore"
Turn it on immediately, please.
Sorry No Spybot didn't turn System Restore off, I done it manually before the scan as it kept coming back after a reboot. As the Nortons was only a trial version to try and help rid the problems I have since installed ZoneAlarm with AV.
here is the new HiJackThis Document

Just another quick question if I can
The infected computer was part of a 4 computer network would this have any bearing on the other 3 as I have scanned with spybot and found a few nasties and also ZoneAlarm AV (not free versions) has detected things on the other three
Hi
"The infected computer was part of a 4 computer network would this have any bearing on the other 3 as I have scanned with spybot and found a few nasties and also ZoneAlarm AV (not free versions) has detected things on the other three"
Yes I'm afraid it might have.

Hi
Logs look good :)
Still problems?
No the computer that was infected appears to be running sweet.
I may do an online Kaspersky scan on the other 3 in the network can I post under this same post if anything is detected or make a complete new post for each.
For some reason I tried to do updates on my other daughters computer as it still only had SP1 (Slack with updates I know) and after shutdown to complete the process it kept rebooting when it finished logging on and tried to get to the welcome screen. I reinstalled a second XP operating system and I can access the files so we can save what was on the HD. I am going to reformat and start with a fresh computer operating system. Could this have been caused by nasties.
Bit worried about updating the one that had the problem now. My other 2 computers have updated ok I think.
Thanks for the help and keep up the good work, without guys like you Internet users would be stuffed lol

Hi
"I may do an online Kaspersky scan on the other 3 in the network can I post under this same post if anything is detected or make a complete new post for each."
Well if they are three of them I'd say that start a new topic.
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update Acrobat Reader to version 8.0
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)
Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)
Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)
Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
