God my whole weekend and now I'm forced to spread my misery around you guys as well because this thing simply won't die.
Having read the other posts on this topic I have taken the liberty of renaming HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe before making this first post, in the hope of wasting slightly less time.
Thank you in advance for any help, doubly for the fact that this one seems to be quite a popular little bugger.

Welcome back to the forum, first this is a Vundo infection compliments of the nice folks at Winfixer, read about it here:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

The Smitfraud-C 888 Toolbar issue probably has nothing to do with it as it is a false positive in Spybot that might be showing because you need an update: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

I will show you the files in your HJT log, there are very likely more which are hidden and will be found by the fix, follow the directions carefully, it is your best chance for success.
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtutrs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqo.dll

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Thanks...Phil

You are sure welcome, take a look at this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
Vundofix, if you look, is informing you about these outdated versions. It appears you have the newest, uninstall all old versions in Add Remove Programs.

We did not get it all and have more work to do. Please uninstall those old versions of Java before you proceed, they may have to do with how the fix works. If any files are not removed please follow the directions to upload them to Atribune so he can add them to the fix. It may be tomorrow before he can get that done?

We also have a fairly nasty backdoor trojan to remove:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Drivers] ssms.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Drivers] ssms.exe
Read about it: http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32rbotajq.html
Since this is a backdoor, you should view this information:
You're infected, one or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too. How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

I am going to post all of the instructions, you work through it at your pace and post when you are ready.

Here is what we are looking at that needs to be deleted yet by Vundofix:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtutrs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll

Next, follow these instructions:
Thanks to andymanchesta and anyone else who helped with the fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Post the Vundofix results, the Report.txt from SDFix and a new HJT log. We will have more cleanup to do.

Thanks

Would you open Notepad then click on Format at the top and uncheck "Word Wrap" if it is checked.

Thanks, the trojan appears to have been removed but the Vundo files are still there:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F38D448A-F274-4C34-B13B-A3E505E95209} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtutrs.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtutrs - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtutrs.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljiigg - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll

and this one is a real problem that needs to be removed also, but the removal seems to work best if all the Vundo files are gone before removing it manually:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\btuhiqlb.dll",realset

We are going to try another tool, please remove Vundofix completely from your computer. If we need it again, we will download it fresh. This fix may remove some of the files in the HJT part of the removal, so do not be concerned if all or none of those files in the instructions are there, just don't miss anything.

Please download VirtumundoBeGone:
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools/VirtumundoBeGone.exe
* Save it to the Desktop
* Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
* Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the Desktop
* Follow the directions as indicated

This program may generate a "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" which is an expected/necessary part of the process.
Do not be concerned.
Just reboot if your system "jams".

To confirm successful deletion, and determine if there are any additional problems, please post the VirtumundoBeGone log VBG.txt. It is found on the Desktop.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6DECF9ED-D7A0-41C0-B07B-8778CDCC3DA9} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtutrs - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awtutrs.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljiigg - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(very important we delete this one if there)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\btuhiqlb.dll <<< delete that file

run cleanmgr
http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/cleanmgr/

Restart the computer and post the VirtumundoBeGone log VBG.txt and a new HJT log.

Thanks

Funny thing, I couldn't delete btuhiqlb.dll, access denied file in use etc so I restarted in safe mode to try it like that and it wasn't there, and is still missing

First I want to be sure you know what this is: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Link\Core.exe

This is one of the toughest infections I have run into in a while. What is happening is because we are not killing it all, it is morphing and putting itself back. You saw the old 04 item: btuhiqlb.dll here is the new one:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jswttrgl.dll",realset

Here are the Vundo files in the HJT log:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2FBD4EE9-298C-478D-85DA-67CA773F91FF} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcy - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F38D448A-F274-4C34-B13B-A3E505E95209} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljiigg.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljiigg - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll

The hackers have no rules to play by and they do all they can to keep us from removing the junk.

Be sure you have all files and folders enabled.

Please make sure you have followed the instructions to upload the files to Atribune:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Once the Vundo files are removed, open HJT right away and remove:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jswttrgl.dll",realset

We are going to try another method using Vundofix.

Download Vundofix again to your desktop.
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes. You may have to do two at a time, if you can put both sets in, do it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ycbeg.*

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ggiijlm.*

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Once this is done, if it is successful, do this:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\jswttrgl.dll",realset

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\jswttrgl.dll <<< delete that file. If it does not want to delete try this:

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jswttrgl.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

Let's hope this works, the only option I have at this point is to wait for Atribune to add those files if this does not work. How long do you think these hackers should go to jail for? They just finally got these fine folks:

Jail, JAIL nononono you underestimate my spitefullness (if that even is a word). First of all I'd have knocked around a bit by all the people whose time they've wasted, real locked in the stocks in the town square sort of thing. Then I would transfer them to being the personal slave of everyone whose time they've wasted until they are ALL suitably compensated. After that, extensive pyschoanalysis to discover what the most boring, soul destroying task they could possibly do is, then make them do it for 6 months. After all that offer them a position writing anti-spyware software with a shitty pension and very little prospects. And possibly arrange for them to be mugged a few times on the way home from that job. But I rant:

the process mljigg.dll is still around, tried fixing it in HJT twice to no avail so I thought I'd best ask before proceeding.

Oh yes EALink/Core.exe, I do have EALink on my machine, it runs every time at startup and some applications of mine, namely BF2142 use it do download patches etc. I assume it's the process that it calls when it needs to open Link if it isn't already

Yep, you should know the log pretty good by now:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F38D448A-F274-4C34-B13B-A3E505E95209} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljiigg.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljiigg - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljiigg.dll

It appears you were able to remove it .dll that was probably putting back the Vundo files. I must believe you have uploaded this file to have it added to the fix. If Atribune is available, he will add the file to the fix. Here his website if you want to look around: http://www.atribune.org/

You may try the standard Vundofix we used first, or any of the other methods we used that you wish or you may wait to see if the fix removes it tomorrow.

It may be that anyone of the fixes may work now that the file you had to remove manually is gone.

Keep me posted

Thanks...Phil

Ok I managed to remove the damn mljiigg.dll that was utterly plaguing my drive. The solution I used was to open up the VundoFix and rather than scanning for Vundo, right clicked and added a file, but rather than typing in the name of the file, I typed in its full address ie. C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljiigg.dll then hit remove.
Upon re-running HJT the entry was still there but had (file missing) next to it, so was then cleaned up by HJT. My (updated today) Spybot is running now but this may be a solution for others to test and see if it works.
The Spybot scan has come back with only a few cookie based spyware so it looks all clear but it would be appreciated if you could have a ganders over this HJT log just so I can have the expert ok that theres no more problems

Great, glad to hear you got it to work. I have a question though. In my post #8 near the center of the post where I start like this:

We are going to try another method using Vundofix.

Download Vundofix again to your desktop.
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/VundoFix.exe
Are not those the instructions you used? I have had to use that method several times for other folks and I wonder why it did not work the first time you used it?
If not, would you place the method you used in a 1, 2, 3 format for us, that may help others with this infection which is getting harder and harder to remove.

Anyway, your HJT log looks clean, let's clean the System Restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
