I'm using Spybot S&D since the early time and I am totally satisfied with protection implemented, this is the reason why I am trying to give my small contribution.
Few days ago I did the upgrade from 1.2 to 1.4 downloading all available patches. In the same PC-maintenance slot, I did also other program upgrades, operating system security patches, etc...
Since then I was not able to run Scandisk and Disk Defrag on C drive anymore.
My Op system is an old Windows ME (I know I should upgrade it, but my philosophy is to not touch running things... until it comply with my needs!) with two physical hard disks, C: is a 60 GB hd containing the Op.sys and programs plus D: that is an 80 GB mainly used to store disk images of C once a month. I use for that the wonderful Power Quest Drive Image program which many times avoided me to completely reinstall system, programs and data, and was very helpful this time too).
Next is a description of my problem:
I could run both Scandisk & Defrag in DOS mode on both HD's
I could run both Scandisk & Defrag on D: under Win ME control.
As soon as I was trying to run Scandisk on C: under Win ME control, it hang with none error message: the HD red LED stopped flashing and nothing happened for hours until Scandisk was cancelled.
Same behavior running Defrag on C: under Win ME control, just the HD LED was flashing normally but no increments were displayed on the status bar.
Obviously, I have no hardware errors on C: at all, therefore I did investigation to try to find another reason causing the system utility tools to hang.... and with great surprise have found that killing the TEATIMER of RESIDENT S&D, both tools were able to complete their jobs.
I have found nothing similar mentioned in S&D Help file, therefore I want to inform you about this, maybe this information can save time to other S&D users (and helpful for you).
In case of need, the Process-list and the System Startup reports are available, let me know if you need them (or like to have) as well as any additional data.
Let me take the opportunity to give you my best wishes for the Christmas time and the coming 2006, my thanks also for the excellent program developed as well as the “commercial strategy” applied.
Thanks God for that.
Sincerely, Roberto Esposito
