Hi audio

Look in your control panels add/remove programs for any of these and uninstall them:

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
or anything similar with Oin or Outerinfo in it.
Zolero
Tizzletalk
MediaTickets
Cowabanga
and any other programs you didn't install or don't recognize - if your not sure please ask first

Download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\efcaxuv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vuxacfe.*

Click Add Files and Click Close Window
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Hi Shaba,

1. Checked for programs installed as recommeded. None of of those in your list were found.

2. All other programs were installed by me and are recognised.

3. OiUnistaller.exe downloaded and run as suggested. No report was generated by this process.
What is the type/nature of the malware this removes?

4. VundoFix.exe downloaded again and run including additional files as requested.

5. Vundo.txt and HJT log follow

Hi

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winjvd32.dll - Required FileASSASSIN to delete"

Kind of expected - I would have instructed KillBox next ;)

You can edit out all cookies etc.

If that's not enough to shrink size, then please upload it to some place (like rapidshare) and post back link there, please :)

Hi

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner (http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.html). You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

Click OK
Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button
Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi

Logs look good :)

Still problems?

Hi again Shaba,

No further pronlems to report. I will welcome your advice on the following.

Question 1
I am intending to 'harden' my PC defenses, Service Packs, Critical Updates, Extra Services etc.
Your site contains useful advice in the posts:
UPDATED WINDOWS by tashi
SO HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by TonyKlien
Are there any other advice posts that may help?

Question 2
I also intend to re-organise the hard disk storage to remove unwanted files and archive others to external storage. Will the add remove programs in XP Control Panel remove all traces (including databases) of the two on-line scanners installed to conduct your cleaning process? If not are you able to advise what remains on the hard disk and how they can be removed?

Question 3
Are you able to suggest tools/applications that can detect and fix problems with the Windows Registry (broken links, invalid keys/values, defragment etc)? It would be an extra bonus if any of your recommendations were also 'portable software' that does not require installation and is able to run from external USB devices.

Question 4
Lastly I am aware of suggestions that SpyBot S&D is able to be used as a portable application as described above. Is this accurate? If so are you able to indicate where guidance is available on setting-up and using SpyBot S&D in this way?

Hi

1. See my clean speech below, there's a lot info.

2. They should be, yes.

3. I prefer ccleaner (free) or jv16 powertools (commercial)

4. See here (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=3191)

Hi

You're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp) and save it to your desktop.
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1...allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html)

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic405.html)

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial60.html)

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com (http://www.windowsupdate.com) regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html)

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

IE/Spyad (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm) <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Winpatrol (http://www.winpatrol.com/) <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software (http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html)

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php) <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place (http://castlecops.com/postlite7736-.html)

Happy surfing and stay clean!

Hi Shaba,

It can sometimes seem that those who benefit from the service take it for granted and do not appreciate the effort of those who provide it. As I have a service/support background, I have long-held the opinion that good service should be recognised and acknowledged.

Many thanks for your guidance and advice. This was clear. concise and well targeted at resolving the problem.

Goodbye and good fortune.

Hi

Thank you and much appreciated :)

Remember also to update to SP2.

Hello again Shaba,

I did not expect to contact you again so soon but while following your "clean speech" suggested actions a further issue has developed.

Each of the following have been successfully conducted.
Java v 1.5 removed
Java v 1.6 installed
IE configuration changed in accordance with your suggestions
System Restore disabled
SpywareBlaster installed
Firefox re-installed (this is my primary browser)
Fresh installation of SpyBot S&D
To this point no unexpected activity experienced.

Upgrade to XP-SP2 installed without problems or error messages
At each boot-up SpyBot Resident now reports 11/05/2007 14:21:03 Denied value "SSC_UserPrompt" (new data: "") deleted in System Startup global entry!
SpyBot check of PC finds muliple infections by MS Security Center and Smitfraud Toolbar-C.888 again. These are all removed by SpyBot.

Should this be treated as a contiuation of the earlier support request or should I open a new post in another part of the forum? If so where should I open it?

In case it is required a HJT report follows

Hi

These are fine, feel free to put them to ignore if you like to:

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.UpdateDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify!=dword:0

These should be gone on next scan:

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888: Settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-220523388-1767777339-839522115-1003\Software\Microsoft\aldd

Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888: Settings (Registry key, fixed)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR

As for resident log, I think this (http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4) forum will help you :)

Hi Shaba,

I feel the MS Security Center finds are due to the fact that I have switched off auto-update of XP. I prefer to conduct this manually. These will be added to the SpyBot ignore list.

I was surprised by the rediscovery of Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 that the first scan by SpyBot again found . I was concerned that there may have been residual elements of the earlier infection still remaining. Subsequent SpyBot scans do not find this malware.

Resident continues to block the "SSC_UserPrompt" so I will raise a post in the forum you suggested.

Many Thanks.

Shaba

Yes, you're right :)

I hope that you will get answer for that teatimer issue in that forum.
