HI, looks like I have fallen foul of these two. Any help would be appreciated.

I have doen the online ETrust online scanning but could get the log (any help). Also ran Spybot in safe mode. Finally downloaded Hijackthis and ran. Again could get the log, it just shut down.

Also, keep getting the AVG Spyware - Adware.Vitumonde warning and can't remove it with that program.

I'm a novice, so any help would be greatful in getting the logs and geting rid of these items.

Welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

I would like to help, but we need at least the HJT log to get started. Vundo is a tough item to remove and we have to see what we are working against. It might help if you rename HJT.exe, point your mouse at it and rename it Cozi41.exe or whatever. You may want to ask someone with more computer experience to lend you a hand. Once you get a HJT log posted we can hopefully start working on cleaning your computer.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. I will have a go at renaming the HJT.exe and see if it produces the log.

Hi pskelley

Weel changing the file name worked. The log is below. Also, when running the Etrust scanner online it picked up the Adware.Virtumonde under c:\windows\systems\xxyvvuu.dll. The scanner removed everything else but this.

The log is

Thanks for returning your information and the HJT log, some information for you about this junk:
Since there is a class action involving this one, you may want to view this information:
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2007/030807-mystery-around-winfixer-slowly-unravels.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBUZHiKhsog
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/search.aspx?q=winfixer+msn
http://www.revenews.com/wayneporter/archives/adware-spyware-greynets/getting_the_fix_on_winfixer_aol_network_now/

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

You have a pretty good mess here, and much of the infection will be hidden, here are the Vundo files I can see:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtst.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xxyvvuu.dll
This is also bad: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vfvgnlta.dll but we will need to remove it manually once Vundo is gone.
Please take the time to read an follow the directions carefully.

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit
the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

Thanks

Thanks for returning the information and the feedback. Right you are about that Vundo file, here it is:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F49ED2B3-08F5-4BA3-8536-2DAEE8C8409B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyvvuu.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: xxyvvuu - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xxyvvuu.dll

watch that 020 area in the HJT log, when the file is gone we can remove the rest with HJT but as long as a Vundo file is logging in early, we can't kill it. Here is what you need to do.

1) Run Vundofix until it locates that file and deletes it and any other files it locates, the stuff does morph.

2) If it does not, then make sure you follow the instructions to upload to file so it can be added to the fix.

3) Once you have done both 1 and 2 then you may give this a try, but the directions must be followed exactly.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

C:\WINDOWS\system32\xxyvvuu.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uuvvyxx.*

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

There is a lot of junk in the log, don't worry about it, we can remove it, you just concentrate on killing Vundo.

Thanks

Hi again,

Many thanks for the quick response. I have rerun Vundo.exe a couple of time, the second pick up three more files (see below). However when running HJT, the log still shows the two offending files. I have uploaded these file as requestd in item 2. When doing Item 3, can you explain 'put a check next to run', can you explain as when I double click on 'VundoFix.exe', I only get the run, save or cancel options. I don't want to run No.3 option incorrectly.

Again many thanks for your help and patience.

* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
I need to see the HJT log, if we don't get all of the junk with Vundofix, the stuff will morph and put itself back, unless I can see a log, I have no idea what you did.
Option # 3, I am sorry, I have never had this infection so I have never had to use those instruction. All I can tell you is that I have used those instructions many times without any problems. My suggestion is that you print them and then follow them step by step and you can not go wrong. I would say to wait until morning to try Vundofix, Atribune will probably have added the file, but without seeing that log, I am slightly blind.

Please post a HJT log when finished so I can see if the infection is gone.

Thanks

Follow these directions carefully:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

(this is very important, this is a very bad file)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\irwkmepa.dll <<< delete that file

6) Use the instructions in the following link to run AVG Anti-Spyware, delete or at least quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post:
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post that scan report and a new HJT log. Let me know how the computer is running and add any comments you think will help.

Thanks...Phil

Now this is your computer, if you have a file that is bad that can't be deleted, boot to safe mode and do it there where it is not running. In this case, try this tool:

How to use the Delete on Reboot tool http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb
Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\irwkmepa.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

continue with the rest of the instructions.

Thanks

Hi Phil

I managed to remove that file in safe mode and on reboot checked to see if it was still there. No it wasn't.

I ran the AVG spyware and the log is below. I did put the resident shield on before running the ATF cleaner in item 7. Not sure if that was right to do ???.

Machine is running better. One observation is that I have ETrust anti virus and firewall. I get the Windows security centre warning saying my antivirus says it's out of date but my license run until Oct 2007 and it's on auto update. It's been doing this for some time and still is. Is this relevant ????

Anyyway logs are:

Hi phil,

Forgot to say Outlook is running a bit slow ???. Seems to be struggling a bit. Any thoughts ???

Thanks for the feedback, let me say first that your HJT log appears clean of malware, great job:bigthumb:

Let's look at these other issues. Fitst, keep in mind that your system just went trough some major trauma, not only the junk that got on it and the changes it may have made to programs? But also the tools and our efforts to remove the junk. While we are on that subject, you may rename HJT.exe if you wish and remove all programs we downloaded during the fix. The one exception is ATF-Cleaner, it is a nice cleaning tool and you may keep it if you wish. The one item AVG found is in your System Restore files, let clean them now like this: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?Open&src=sec_doc_nam

One observation is that I have ETrust anti virus and firewall. I get the Windows security centre warning saying my antivirus says it's out of date but my license run until Oct 2007 and it's on auto update. It's been doing this for some time and still is. Is this relevant ????
Start > Control Panel > Security Center. Make sure all three items are green for go. The junk does make changes in settings so if anything is turned off, use the drop down menu to start it running again. I you still have problems with eTrust, I suggest you contact their technical support and check with them, they may have you do a reinstall. Everything running right for Zone Alarm?
You did say:
One observation is that I have ETrust anti virus and firewall. There is not another Firewall running beside ZA is there? You want only one antivirus program, one firewall and at least one good anti-spyware program running in realtime. Are you getting any messages from the Security Center? If so post it "word for word"

Forgot to say Outlook is running a bit slow ???. Seems to be struggling a bit. Any thoughts ???You are talking about the office program "Outlook" and not Outlook Express"...correct. It may be the malware damaged a file/files. I would try this first.
If there are any missing or corrupt System Files causing the problem, this Windows tool will fix that:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

You can also look at the Google to see if anything will help:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Outlook+is+running+a+slow+&btnG=Google+Search

And as a last resort, a reinstallation of the program should fix the problem.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Hi phil

Mnay thanks for your help, it been great having your assistance. I will look at the various websites on safe surfing you have provided.

I updated and reran Spybot. It picked up the Smitfraud-tolbar888 again in the HKey area. I removed it at the end of the scan, rebooted and reran spybot again. The scan showed no further trace. So hopefully that is the last of that.

I did mean Microsotf Office Outlook express, when I go to view an email from the inbox, it freezes and I have to shut it down. I wonder if it's worth reinstalling, any comments ???.

The windows security centre shows both my firewall and antivirus as a warning. It says "EZ Firewall/Antivirus is installed, but its status is unknown/Reports that it might be out of date". Do you think it might be worth contact ETrust for their comments ??.

Once again, many thanks for your help.

You are sure welcome, for starters, since you said you have the newest data bases for Spybot, then you can ignore that worning, it's a false positive, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668

I did mean Microsotf Office Outlook express: Outlook Express I have not used in many years, preferring hotmail and gmail which are both available free. Here are troubleshooting sites for OE:

As far as your firewall/antivirus, I would definately get with technical support to see if that program should be reinstalled.

Many thanks for your help. I'll keep scanning with AVG, Spybot etc on a regular basis to ensure I'm not infected.
