Got it (and some other nasties) today during a normal surf of pages I visit regularly.
It hijacks IE and opens other pages (a lot of which are resulting in even more malware). Following some instructions I saw for other users, I downloaded the Smitfraud fix program, and created a log. Spybot zapped all of the other malware, but Smitfraud has proved impossible to remove (I've tried numerous methods in both normal and safe mode and have been working steadily on it for about 6 hours now). I'm at wits end! It seems to kill IE after about 10 minutes (I start getting page not displayed errors). I have to perform a system restore to get it to function correctly again.
AVG picked up a trojan horse virus (Downloader.Agent.KVQ) that was successfully removed. I have cleared my temp files and cookies.

All advice given is taken at your own risk.Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.
I appreciate your zeal but:
1) It is always better when the directions are followed.
2) Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 is a false positive: http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=8668
You must be careful as some of these tools can do more damage than good if run when the infection is not present.
3) Looks like you do have a Vundo infection, but that is about all I know without a complete HJT log. So we will both be on the same page, please read and follow the instructions. Since this is likely Vundo, I will let you know if I need the online scan once I have a HJT log and can see the extent of the infection.

I understand, I know how I would feel if one of my computers got infected and I know how to remove the junk.
This looks like a Vundo infection and I am afraid things are going to get more stressful, it is not easy to remove. I need to give you some information and collect some so I can see the infection we are up against. First, information for you.

Before we go after Vundo, you will have to decide about this one:

This item was installed along with another program because the eula was not read. I can show you how to remove it and I would not allow it on any computer I own, but you have to know it may effect your ability to use the program that installed it. It would be illegal to install it without your knowledge, hense the eula agreement.
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
TeaTimer will block changes we must make, use these instructions to turn it off until we are finished:

It is very important that you follow the directions carefully and exactly.
Much of Vundo is totally hidden, here are the files I see in the HJT log to help with your awareness:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.
Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
If there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit

Vundo is hard to remove, concentrate on the information I am giving you. This file:

Run the fix until it finds that Vundo file, if it does not the upload that file so it can be added to the fix.
I will say again, Vundo is HARD to remove, please focus on the instructions.

VundoFix has not detected the file after about 10 runs now, so I have uploaded it to the site you gave me before. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and will keep scanning for the rest of the night just in case it finally does pick it up.
What I have noticed is that going online at all seems to cause some of the Vundo to redownload itself into my temp internet files. I can purge it with the fix, but it's a bit of a problem.

Thanks for the feedback, hopefully Atribune will get the file added and the next time you run the fix it will clean that file. The junk does morph if we can't kill it all. The sooner the hackers responsible for this junk are in jail, the better.
Here is another method you can try using the same fix:
* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qomnnno.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\onnnmoq.*
* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Post a new HJT log if that works, keep me posted we do have other junk to remove, and I have another tool we can try if it comes to that.

OK! Went ahead and did what you asked as soon as I got home today... I couldn't find where I was supposed to make VundoFix run as a task, but I did the rest of the steps.
I placed this C:\WINDOWS\system32\onnnmoq.* in VundoFix exactly as you had typed it--that was OK, right? I wasn't sure if I should change it to .dll or not.

Ah, I hate to double-post, but I've just checked the system32 folder, and qomnnno.dll is now gone from the folder (it was in plain sight before, silently mocking me). Compy is definitely faster--before it was lagging whenever I opened into My Computer (which is saying something--I'm running on 4 gigs of ram) I feel like we might be making headway. ^^

Thanks for the feedback, looks like you did it correctly and that is correct, often the file if removed and the item still has to be removed with HJT.
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to ProtexisLicensing and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.
4) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jsksjhnj.dll <<< delete that file
:\WINDOWS\system32\PSIService.exe <<< delete that file
7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

I've done what you asked--the only thing was that it wouldn't let me delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\jsksjhnj.dll
The computer is running OK--I think that qomnnno file was what was causing the browsers to shut down too--I seem to be surfing with relative ease compared to the last two days.

We still have junk to clean, it looks like it is TeaTimer causing it to stay, we are going to turn off TeaTimer and Windows Defender. You can see the junk in the log that needs to go. It is dead stuff be we want it gone, if it is still in the log after turning off TeaTimer and following these directions, then I want you to uninstall Spybot, run through the directions again and then reboot the computer. Then you can reinstall Spybot and activate TeaTimer if you wish.
1) Turn off TeaTimer: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
2) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
3) This junk is missing from the HJT log, I would like you to check, if it is there use this tool to remove it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jsksjhnj.dll <<< if it is not there, do not be concerned, just make sure all files and folder are enabled or you won't see it.

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jsksjhnj.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

But they are NOT malware, simply the was IE settings are being made and of no real concern.
You may remove all of the tools we download for the cleanup, the exception is AFT-Cleaner which is a fine little tool. You may keep it if you wish. Let's clean the system restore files:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

I removed those last two bits, and the compy is running like new. Thanks so much for all your help! It's so nice to be able to turn somewhere for help with these things--I was at wits end just three days ago.
I'll give all those pages a good read, and will remember to keep my Java up to date from now on. I'll also clean the system restore files right away. ^^
