Hi,

My Sbybot keeps coming up with Smitfraud. In the past few days I have also had numerous viruses which I have managed to get rid off. Can someone please have a look and see if I have a problem.

I have done an etrust Anti virus online scan which found no virus, I have also conducted an Adaware and AVG Anti spyware and Anti Virus seach which found nothing.

Vundofix found not infected files.

All advice given is taken at your own risk. You said:

Make sure your Spybot version is the newest and all databases are up to date and all bad products are immunized against.

Here is what I do see.

1) Left over from Vundofix that was not removed.

2) This nasty trojan that has compromosed you security. You need to read all about it under all tabs and consider this information:

Let's see if we can clean up the malware like this:

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

4) Disable the Service
Click Start > Run and type services.msc
Scroll down to Windows Active Directory Helper and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

5) Delete the Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type (MSSearchHelper) and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nddydcpd.dll <<< delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iexplorer.exe <<< delete that file (make sure you are in the correct folder)

8) Run Avg Anti-Spyware using the instructions in the following link. Delete or quarantine andthing it finds and save the report to post.

9) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post the scan results from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log. How is the computer running now?

Hi,

Thanks for helping me and sorry for the delay in getting back - we are operating on different time zones and I am very much a novice.

Anyway, I am having a bit of trouble completing all your recommendations.

I have not been able to disable Windows Active Director Helper - it is already showing as stopped and there is no option to click stop. I cannot delete th NT service via Hijack this as MS Search helper is still enabled.

I have posted the AVF scan which found nothing and the new Hijack this. I haven't had a trojan in 3 days but am still getting pop-ups. Thanks again for your help.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\ <<< needs an update. You are only down one, but hackers are using Java to infect computers easily, so you want to keep it updated just as you would Windows.
Once you download the new version, uninstall any old versions in Add Remove programs.

Let's clean the System Restore files: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Hi,

Thank you so much for yor help. I have updated Java and deleted the old version. I have also disabled McAfee so I am now running only 1 anti-virus. I have also fixed the system restore. Everything seems to be running fine now and comes up clean.

AVG Anti-Spyware is a good program but it does use some resources. Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it off completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.
