View Full Version : Hijack - possible Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888? - help please

I can start the day by cleaning up my PC as much as possible by cleaning cookies/temp files and doing full scans with Spybot, Norton AV and then Trend Micro System Clean.

However, as soon as I open web browser, Explorer will immediately start jumping to unknown webpages (all the usual ones I've seen other users mention), opening pop-ups and changing homepage. Norton AV will start alerting to the detection of new downloader trojans/infostealers/Trojan.Nebuliser. I will also start receiving alerts from Zonealarm that unknown .temp.exe files are trying to access the internet. Within 15 minutes, Temp folder will have 100s of thse and I will have much malware in general. Browsing is not really possible.

In pereparing to post, I had done a cleanup, but as soon as I accessed etrust anti-virus scan. This kicked-off and by completion, the scan had reported finding:
"mshtml.exe" - Win32/Clspring!generic - in C:\WINDOWS\temp which it couldn't cure.

Spybot in safe mode continues to find a Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSMGR no matter how many times in a row I repeat the clean process.

If you still need help, please review and follow the directions I posted. You will also understand what happens when you add to your own post. You can wait on the online scan, I may not need it.
This appears to be a Vundo infection which I warn you can be hard to remove, there is also other junk. If you wish to proceed with this, I suggest you keep the computer offline except when troubleshooting, the junk will download more.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it ianidall.exe or whatever you wish.
Restart the computer and post the uninstall list and a new HJT log. We should have a look at the infection in 02 BHO and 020 Winlogon.

Many thanks for the offer to help. I regret my system collapsed completely on Friday (amongst other things the paging file had been fragmented into many thousands of pieces and I was being prevented for doing a boot-time defrag). I had all my data backed-up elsewhere, so just a question of the time for fresh installation.

I'm glad I have now found this forum at least - I hopefully am a bit wiser of the dangers and problems that can arise.
