Let me start off by saying that, as my name suggests, I am not great with computers or technology. That being said, responses written for someone who doesn't know much about computers would be the most effective. Now onto the problem.

I've seen a few threads around with people posting problems similar to mine. While using firefox (the only browser I use), I'll occasionally get a bunch of IE pop-ups and ads. They seem to be taking up a lot of RAM. While that isn't the worst thing in the world, it's extremely annoying and I'm thinking that it's a symptom of something worse. I've seen a few people post HijackThis logs. I don't know what it is or what it does, but I got that and used it. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Hi NotTechSavvy

I'd like you to post a log with 1.99.1 version:

Use this (http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis_sfx.exe) link to get HijackThis.
Save it to your desktop and then double-click to run it.
It will install the program in c:\program files\HijackThis.
Browse to that location with windows explorer, rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe and double click on the scanner.exe program to run. Choose the 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
That will allow you to save the log to the desktop (or some other place) and leave open a notepad file with the HijackThis log in it.

Now post your HijackThis log into this topic.

Hi

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

It seems as if my problems have gotten more numerous here. The image that was on my desktop won't show up anymore (a light blue color is now in its place). I recently had the "blue screen of death." I found about 15 files on my desktop that were all executable files that I never downloaded. I deleted them because I'm sure that they were harmful. And now both AVG and windows is telling me that I have multiple viruses and healing them doesn't seem to do anything - it tells me I have the same viruses over and over again regardless of whether I've healed them or not. I just went through the task manager and ended every task that seemed unnecessary. Here's the latest HijackThis log.

Hi

Yes, we are back to square one and even behind.

It's essential that you keep computer as much as possible disconnected or cleaning process won't make any sense.

First, re-run vundofix

Remove from add/remove programs:

New.net or NewDotNet or similar

Then:

Download SDFix (http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

1. Please download AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/)
Install AVG Anti-Spyware
Launch the program, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will now open to the main screen.

You will need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware, do not run the scan yet!


2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller (http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip) to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
Click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".


3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE (http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu) and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, Open AVG Anti-Spyware:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware

5. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon http://metallica.geekstogo.com/foldericon.png and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.



Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I am posting on another computer right now because I can't even start up the one experiencing problems. I was able to install SDFix, but after that when I restarted, it went to the blue screen of death. Now, everytime I start it up it does that. I tried starting in safe mode. It shows a list of things it's loading, at the bottom it tells me to press Esc to cancel loading one of them (I've tried pressing esc and doing nothing). After that it doesn't do anything.

The only thing that I can think of that I might have done wrong is this. I have AVG already and it alerted me about a threat. Instead of heal (which I had been selecting previously) I selected move to virus vault. My fear is that I may have moved something important and that is causing the blue screen. Other than that I haven't done anything to exacerbate this, so I don't know why all of the issues are getting worse. I'll try starting in safe mode again.

I just tried and it again told me to press Esc to cancel loading Vax357.sys or something similar. I didn't do anything and just let it go. After that I let it sit for awhile and it didn't do anything so I shut it off. At this point, I'm even more confused as to how I can deal with this.

I'm not trying to bump my thread. I'd edit my posts with this information, but I guess I can't do that. I have my problematic computer started here and I need to mention this. Anytime I click on a folder, a little error message pops up that tells me "This page has an unspecified potential security flaw." and asks me if I want to continue. Normally I would just hit yes, but it says Internet Explorer in the window bar, so it appears to be something harmful. I can't get to the Brute Force Uninstaller because it gives me that warning and I'm reluctant to choose yes or no.
