I swear I am at war with my computer! Please h please help me! I have the dreaded Smitfraud-c.toolbar888! Its like the plague! I have ran 4 different scans trying to get rid of it, including S&D. I don't even know where to start. I have read other logs and everyone keeps mentioning highjack this. Where do I get that and where do I begin to destroy this cursed what ever it is! Much obliged to any help!

computer is very slow and sluggish, constant requests to sign on pop up, redirected searches keeps disconnecting me from internet and saying you are working offline would you like to connect? Upon startup repeat windows asking to connect to internet.

Here is what I have done so far

Ran McAfee Stinger
found: nothing
Ran Earthlink Protection Control Scan
deleted 6 items 2 of which keep reappearing (Trojan.Evker and BrowserAid) after scanning again
Ran Ad-Aware
37 tracking cookies and 11 MRU's (deleted all)
Ran Spybot S&D
found: Smitfraud_C.Toolbar888, deleted but we all know will be back next scan. Found two malware items and another trojan deleted them as well.

Shut down for night

Reran all four scans:
Earthlink Protection found nothing
McAfee Stinger found nothing
Ad-Aware found nothing
Spybot S&D (updated first) when I signed on kep getting the message "The Web page you requested is not available offline.... even though I was online) found Smitfraud-C.Tollbar888 and Winsoftware.winantiviruspro told S&D to fix but we all know that wont happen.

Went online and downloaded HijackThis from Bleepingcomputer, followed instructions in forum topic# 34773

Restarted computer and reran adaware (nothing, removed all MRU's) and S&D

Ran HijackThis:

Welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk. Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mstskmgr.exe

http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq9f6048631200-MSTS27091886/MSTSKMGR.EXE.html

C:\WINDOWS\system\services.exe
Windows Host Services (WINHOST32) X services.exe Appears to be an SDbot variant. Note: Located in %windir%\system

A Backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge. A Backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

If you should decide to continue with the cleaning process once you have read the above information, then follow these instructions.

Update Your Windows XP.
You are currently using an unpatched version of Windows XP.
Before attempting to remove malware, it is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a.
Get SP1a here : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You should also get SP2, but NOT NOW, rather only after your machine is clean.
After updating your Windows to SP1a, post a new HijackThis log please, using the Post Reply button.

Thanks

thank you for your quick responce! This is my brothers computer that I borrowed while I purchase a new one. I happened to do scans before I used it, (thank god!) So I am going to give it back to him and tell him to deal with his mistakes on his own! Thank you very much for your help! Have a great weekend. What you guys do is great so once again thanks a million!:bigthumb:

okay so I have completely restored my computer, I am still paranoid that there is still that nasty trojan on here should I repost my scans, well I have to redown-load everything but what should I do next? (I decided just to yell at my brother but rebuild the PC anyway)

"BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288

If you are in compliance with the above instructions, post a new HJT log, I would be glad to take a look and advise you. If the computer has been reformatted, it should be clean, but you still need Service Pack#2 and all critical Windows Updates.

Thanks

Okay so I went down your check list:
I updated windows, installed SP2 for XP
I tried to run the online virus scanner but it literally took hours to download the signatures and I was still waiting......
I ran S&D after updating it
I ran Adaware after updating it
I ran my McAfee stinger

So here is my Hijack this log, lets hope that it is clean and you don't have to put up with me anymore (thank you by the way) So lets cross our fingers!

Thanks for posting your HJT log, that log appears to be clean of malware. Here is some information to help you keep it that way.

Some good information for you:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict2520.html
http://cybercoyote.org/security/not-admin.shtml

This is a dead line that you can remove with HJT:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

And I have this information:
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-4638.html on this item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs
and you get to make that call.

Thanks...pskelley
