I know that others had this problem here, and I would normally try to remove this infection myself, but since there are so many warnings of removing items/files that I am not totally clear about, can be a dangerous move, I hope some of your advise can help me in this predicament.

As the title mentions, I have this reoccuring smithfraud malware infection that SpyBot discovers, and cant get rid of. Below is a result of the Hijackthis scan:

In addition, I have Symantec Antivirus, Spybot, and XoftSpy, as well as Windows Defender on my computer. Win XP SP2. I ran FixVundo, and this scan did not come up with any results, however XoftSpy keeps turning up a trojan.vundo infection. Could it be a false positive??

All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

Be sure you read and followed the above instructions. You may wait on the online scan unless I ask for it. I do not use XoftSpy so I have no idea about false positives. I can tell you if Spybot is the newest version and the databases are up to date, and you are totally immunized, the you can ignore Smitfraud.C-Toolbar888 if Spybot is what is finding it.

What is Windows Defender telling you? What other symptoms are you having? Vundo is a prolific popup maker usually directing you to Winfixer and other rouge spyware products.

SmitfraudFix\HijackThis.exe <<< return here and rename HJT.exe, call it nemesyss.exe or whatever you like. Also, make sure you are using that folder "SmitfraudFix" for only HJT.

Once this is done, restart the computer and post a new HJT log. If Vundo is present, it should be showing now. Let me know about any symptoms besides the false positive.

Thanks for your help PSKELLY, you don't know how much I appreciate it.

Other symptoms that I get are very annoying popups, and for some reason, whenever I set my privacy settings with Internet explorer, under the tools>Internet options>Privacy, to Medium-High, once a pop up occurs, this setting is automatically set to "Accept All Cookies".

Windows defender dosen't find anything, its only with Spybot that SmitFraud comes up. I will follow up with the new intructions you set hopefully later tonight.
