I was unable to get a log from the other recommended online scan, although it SAID it found only the alt.net problem and couldn't fix it.

Welcome to the forum, I wish to be sure you have seen this information: "BEFORE you POST" Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.

There is nothing showing in the HJT log, which is not unusual for Smitfraud infections. We need a little information, like this:

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< download Smitfraudfix from here and follow ONLY these directions.

Search:
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 1 and hit Enter to create a report of the infected files. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm

Post the uninstall list and the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix.

Thanks

You all must be REALLY good if you understand all that! Thanks again for all the time spent on this for me. Hoping this brings my system back up to par and gets rid of that annoying pop up warning!

Good is the guy who created the tool for us to use:
This tool was created by S!Ri, and is available for FREE.
Voluntary donations will be accepted by S!Ri, at his main website only.
Anyone, other than the creator, trying to make a profit
or solicit money from its use would be involved in fraudulent activity.
http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php <<< tutorial if needed, follow the directions carefully:

Clean:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Optional:
To restore Trusted and Restricted site zone, select 3 and hit Enter.
You will be prompted: Restore Trusted Zone ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to delete trusted zone.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Uninstall list:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
You have the newest version installed, uninstall these old versions, hackers can use them to exploit you as long as they are on your computer.
http://www.theregister.com/2007/05/11/google_malware_map/ <<< like this

Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player
For your information, Viewpoint is installed by aol probably without your knowledge. I suggest you uninstall this resource waster in Add Remove programs.
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/archives/2005/nov4.php#viewpoint
http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

That is all I see but I do not know all of those programs. You want to make sure you do and you know they are safe.

Post the C:\rapport.txt from Smitfraudfix and a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

Thanks

NO MORE NASTY POP UP INVADING MY SCREEN!

I play very memory and internet access intensive games and having this thing constantly interupting me was causing serious issues with my gaming! You have my thanks forever and I will definately recommend you guys to anyone who has similar issues. I am about to move to KY to help care for my parents and my mother has a computer she won't even turn on because of the density of the infections. I will most assuredly be using SPYBOT to fix it!

Could this malware nasty have been what was causing my modem to reset ever half hour or so? If not, I will still have to purchase a new one :)

Thank you all again!

Thanks for returning your information and the feedback. If you want to express your thoughts and feeings about the scum who are responsible, you can do that here: If you have been infected by one of the SpyAxe family

Great job following all of the complex instructions:bigthumb:

I did not notice before, you have no folder for HJT? HJT needs to store logs and backups, create a folder like this:
C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe and move the bachups and the log that is there into that folder along with the .exe You can make a shortcut to the Desktop for HJT if you are sure no one in the house will fool with it. It can be dangerous in untrained hands.
A little tutorial about some things HJT can do: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html

You are also running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode and I should see a log in Normal Mode? Your call.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

Besides that the HJT log looks clean of malware, let's clean System Restore files now: System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

The question about the modem is a little out of my field, I have not heard of this infection causing that issue, but the hackers are constantly changing the junk, so who knows. Might just be a setting changed. If you provide more information about the modem, descripe what it is doing, post any errors you get word for word, I will see what I can find out. If your ISP provides the modem, sidcuss it with them also. I should say it may be as simple as unplugging the modem, for a few minutes, power down the PC. Then plug the modem un and start the PC. You are actually rebooting the small computer in the modem. That may work?
