My other protections seem to be defending against the effects of the popups, but I need assistance removing the downloader itself.

3) C:\Downloads\HijackThis.exe <<< rename HJT.exe to Redford.exe or whatever you like.
4) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
Restart the computer and post and information I requested, the uninstall list and a new HJT log.

2) Yes, it was a temporary fix to allow access to a website. I can remove it if you want.
3) Ok, whatever.
4) When I click the save list... button, the program instantly closes. Similarly, if I try to manually save a log file it is ineffective. If I click the option that automatically displays a log after a scan, however, I get one.

Thanks for the feedback,
1) I am 99% sure you have a Vundo infection which is a real pain to remove. I would like to see that list so I can make sure you have the newest version of Java and no old ones. It may be the infection, which is why I want HJT renamed, the hackers know our programs, but you did not rename it as I asked.
2) As long as I know you are aware of the Hosts file, removing it is up to you.
3) C:\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe <<< please point your mouse at the .exe and choose rename, call it whatever you wish, anything but what it is. Post a new HJT log and we should be able to see the infection. It will appear as 02 BHO and 020 Winlogon.

I'm a very reason-related person, and the fact you didn't actually give me a reason meant I had to figure out that reason myself before I realised I had to change the name. I guess I'm not used to just taking instructions - even if they don't make sense. Sorry for the false information. Thanks for returning your information, before I start I want you to know the list that I was talking about that did not look complete was the uninstall list. I have never seen one that started at the letter N since the list is alphabetical. Would you check and post anything from A to the line above this one: Natural Selection 3.2 if I am correct.

The reason it is so hard to remove is when it logs on, these are the files that are tough to remove:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebxwxw - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebxwxw.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkhfc - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll
There will be more that are still hidden.
Please follow the directions carefully for the best chance of success.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"
Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislog
in a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

However, while I got a deleted dll error at startup, spybot keeps telling me that "jkkll" is trying to modify the registry. This is one of the files listed, and even though rundofix deleted five files this one has come up again. What shall I do? At least the pop-ups have stopped.

and yet it or the new version is not showing in the uninstall list and the new version should be?
Please run the updater in the Java console to see what it reports.
If I have not mentioned it before, I will mention again that this infection is extremely tough to remove. So...you have the name of a files it is not removing, if the directions were followed, that file will have already been uploaded to Atribune so he can add it...correct?

The sooner these hackers are in jail the better, but they are hurting a lot of folks in the meantime. Soime who cannot afford the expenses involved.

There is more junk in the log, but this is what we must kill first. Run the fix until it find that file, it will probably find other hidden one and kill them at the same time. The junk will morph until we get it all. Remember to upload the file to Atribune right away so if we need to use the fix it will be added.
If you run the fix and it becomes obvious it is not going to remove the file until it has been added, then you can try this:

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebxwxw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wxwxbeg.*
* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.
* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Watch the 020 area of the HJT log, this one is a valid file:

We don't want to see any 020 lines there like this one:

At that point, send the Vundofix log and a HJT log and we will finish the cleanup.

Sorry if I've sounded a litle crazed but my computer broke at almost the same time as I came down with a nasty stomach bug meaning I am in a lot of discomfort. As for "uploading the files", I would love to help, but I am not totally sure what files to upload. Do you mean the hijackthis file, the vundofix log, or what?
Also, I attempted t run vundofix several times, but it repeadly only deleted similar files and then regenerated them, leaving a growing list of junk in my hijackthis report. How many attempts do you suggest?

Well, let me say I have helped folks clean this infection hundreads of times, perhaps you need to look back over the instructions again. I started around 5AM EST and am about burned out, do your best to follow the instructions, they are not all that complex. Post the Vundofix results and a new HJT log and I shall have a look in the am when I am fresh.

As for the java version, I use the java runtime enviroment since I use firefox. For whatever reason even though I downloaded the latest JRE, vundofix does not show it as my current java version. Here's hoping to less popups.

OK...good job:bigthumb: we have some cleanup to do now:
1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.
2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.
3) We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
Open Windows Defender, Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
4) TeaTimer will also block the changes we have to make, at times Spybot has to be uninstalled because of TeaTimer. Use the instructions in this link to turn it off: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm
5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
6) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\luqjfbfh.dll <<< delete that file

7) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Restart the computer and post a new HJT log, let me know how the computer is running.

Seems to be running great. The sole remaining problem is that the system is still trying to load luqjfbfh.dll on startup, and then giving an error message when it can not be found. I am uploading my rundo log to the website.

Thanks for the HJT log, you appears to have missed that item yesterday, look at my last instruction #6.
Here is the item in this new HJT log:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsUpdate] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\luqjfbfh.dll",realset
This item is what is causing the error message you are getting. Did you follow those directions. Let's go at it again.
1) You must enabled hidden files to see it.
2) You must disable Windows Defender and TeaTimer
3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of this item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsUpdate] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\luqjfbfh.dll",realset
Make sure NOTHING is running except HJT, close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"
Go straight to this file, do not restart the computer, HJT is a small Processor and it has now stopped that running process so the file can be deleted.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\luqjfbfh.dll <<< delete that file
Now restart the computer and look in a new HJT log to make sure the item is gone, you should know what it looks like in the 04 lines by now.
If it should still be there, then do this.

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\luqjfbfh.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button.

The file was already deleted. That's why it was giving me a "file not found" message. The message is fixed, and I double-checked for the file and it was not there. Unless you have any further concerns I am willing to call my problem "solved". Thank you for your assistance.

System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
