View Full Version : Smitfraud-C Toolbar 888 -- How do we kill this

afsdoc
2007-05-18, 16:02
Hi -- I think I have read everything and understand what you need to help me. I have this dreaded Smitfraud-C Toolbar 888 problem. I have read what you all have recommended for others and tried to do it including:

1. Using spybot in safe mode -- still there after it says fixed
2. Downloading vundo fix and running it -- problem returns
3. Using the smitfraud fixer you recommend -- and still problem
I have Mcaffe as my virus software and have updated spybot as of 16 May -- everytime I go online issues get worse of course so not sure I could do a kasperkey online scan.

Any help would be huge

Below is what I get when I run HJT

Hello,

Your system is terribly infected. Problem with these infections nowadays is, it causes a lot of damage. Even if we clean the malware off your system, I can't guarantee that your system will be clean afterwards, because these infections/bundles leave a lot of leftovers behind that most scanners won't even recognise and logs won't show.
Also, I can't promise you we can repair all the damage it caused... Even after cleaning the malware, you can still get errors afterwards because of the damage. Solving these is not always possible since it will be searching for a needle in a haystack to find the right cause and solution.
So, we can try to clean this up and do what we can, but keep in mind that we can't solve ALL problems this malware already caused.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start. Reason I am telling this is because when a system is so terribly infected and we try to clean this up manually, the damage that is already present may interfere with our removal attempts.

Please perform my next steps in the right order..

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup (http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm)
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat).
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Then,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Don't worry if some entries won't get fixed.

* Download Combofix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Thanks so much for looking at this -- I am on holiday now in the states and will get to this promptly on my return -- hope to have this to you Monday -- quite a bummer you are rather pessimistic -- is this trojan that evil or am I particularly lucky (eg should I be planning to buy a new machine)

Thanks

Andy

Ok, I'll read you back on monday.
I just hope you won't use this infected computer in between.

Nah, no need to buy a new machine, although it's quite heavily infected, but we can fix this - so don't be pessimistic. ;)

OK -- I have done as you instructed.

First, when I went to hijackthis and check all the selections you told me to choose, one of them was not there at all:
O20 Winlogon Notify: vtsrq -C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsrq.dll

Despite that I persisted on with your directions -- and I think I have posted the stuff you have asked for -- if I have gotten it wrong I apologize in advance -- and again thank you so much for your help and patience -- becuase the posts combined are too long I will post combofix out first below and then the hijackthis separetly

Andy

Then drag the ComboFix-Do.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/Combo-Do.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Did as you instructed -- when the combofix ran it automatically rebooted but did not produce a logfile so I ran it again and this is the text I got:

"Andrew" - 2007-05-28 15:33:11 Service Pack 2
ComboFix 07-05.27.V - Running from: "C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew\Desktop\"

Also -- if we suceed I so owe you a coffee, a beer, dinner, all of the above -- u will have to point me to someplace where I can read and understand why Mcafee failed so miserably at dealing with this

Thanks

Hi,

Well, the script you made did run as I can see from your log, this since the files and folder we put in the script to remove are gone.
Maybe it ran two times? Anyway, it worked, that's the most important thing. :)

Just a leftover we have to deal with... So go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

sc delete "AFSEGTGF Windows Service" Hit enter

It will open a black window for a second and close it again.

Then delete the folder C:\Qoobox <== this folder contains the backups of the files Combofix deleted, and we don't want them anymore :)

The rest of your logs look clean again.
And another important thing to perform..

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs: Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

u will have to point me to someplace where I can read and understand why Mcafee failed so miserably at dealing with this
I made a personal page for the Antivirus and other scans/tools I recommend here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/Links.html) and you won't find McAfee or Symantec/Norton there. This is with a reason I didn't put them there. Imho, both are bloated and because of that, cause a huge system slowdown and I am not really impressed by its detection and removal. But then again, this is my personal opinion. I am sure that there are a lot of people who like McAfee and Symantec/Norton.

There are a lot of free Antivirus out there as well which are great in detection and removal. My personal choice is Avira - it impresses me everyday with its detection and was also recently being tested/compared with other Antivirus. Full results here (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/alex/marx/detections_2007q2.htm).

Anyway, how are things running now? Popups gone?

Lol... I just counted how many McAfee related processes are active and running here in your case..: 16!

So, I assume you installed the latest version Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.1? Or did you have problems with installing it?
Can you post a new HijackThislog in your next reply to see if it's properly installed?

miekiemoes
2007-05-29, 01:12
Actually, no need to post a HIjackThislog. The best way to figure out if it's properly installed, is to verify it first if you're having the latest version now.
To do this, go to next page and click the Verify Installation button
http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
This should show what version you have installed.

Then, to test if java is working, go to next page:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

If you can see the animated dancing Duke logo image there, then it means that Java is properly installed and working.
If not, then read the instructions below. Also make sure your McAfee isn't interfering with java applets and blocking them.

I anticipated you would recommend all these and I did all these steps -- even uninstalled and re-installed it -- when I check the internet properites everything is kosher -- however, when I try to open to java tool on the control panel as JAVA recommends on it sites I get this gobeldy gook saying it can't find the path of the file -- so something isn't talking to something else

Also, I want to make a donation to spybot of course, but would love to get you a gift card to say amazon as a thanks for all your time -- would that be ok

Hi,

First thing to know is,
Then, to test if java is working, go to next page:
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

If you can see the animated dancing Duke logo image thereIf you saw the animated Dancing Duke logo, then it is properly installed.

So, when you want to open the control panel via start > controlpanel > java-icon, it says it can't find the file?
The file is called javacpl.cpl or javacpl.exe will also open it.
It should be located in your system32-folder and the C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin - folder. When you doubleclick the file, it should open it.
Once again, make sure your McAfee isn't interfering here, because when you open it, it could be possible that your McAfee displays an "alert", so you have to allow it.
If still no luck, I think you better post this issue at the Sun Java forums since they are the only experts in their software and can give you the best support concerning Java issues: http://forum.java.sun.com/index.jspa

Also, I want to make a donation to spybot of course, but would love to get you a gift card to say amazon as a thanks for all your time -- would that be okThat's very nice of you and much appreciated. So I assume you need my mailaddress to send me the gift card? I'll send it via Private Message here. :)

Concerning the malware issues, that should be fixed now, so please read my Prevention page (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html).

Happy Surfing again! :)

OK -- I'm sorry to pester again but I am still lost as to why JAVA won't work after I followed your instructions to a tee -- here is what I get when I try to click on the java plug in icon on my control panel:

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\javaw.exe-classpath « C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03 »\lib\plugin.jar-Djavaplugin.version=1.4.2_03-Djavaplugin.nodotversion=142_03-Duser.home= « C:\Documents and Settings\Andrew »sun.plugin.panel.Controlpanel

Now also here is a new hijack this output just to make sure there is not a registry issue:

Hi,

I don't see the latest version of Java installed here...
It is still showing the older version in your log, but this time with (file missing) next to it.

I guess your Teatimer is interfering here, because entries were not removed and I even see related entries from Combofix which aren't removed either.

Do next please..

Disable your teatimer and leave it disabled:
How to disable TeaTimer (http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm)
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat (http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat).
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Then,

Check and fix next entries in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [combofix] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe /c C:\ComboFix\Combobatch.bat
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\npjpi142_03.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\npjpi142_03.dll (file missing)

Then reinstall Sun Java from this link:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Then post a new HijackThislog in your next reply.

(ALSO -- how do I check the private message to get your email)On top, you'll see "Private Messages" in the top right corner. Click that link :)

Hi,

Check and fix next leftover in HijackThis related with older version of Sun java - I overlooked that one previously:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe

I still don't see the new Java being installed here though..
What happens when you doubleclick the "jre-6-windows-i586.exe" present on your desktop? (which is the installer for the latest version of java).
Because it looks like the installer never ran. Do you get any error while installing it?
Please disable your McAfee, because I want to make sure McAfee is not interfering with the Sun Java install.

When I click on the file in extracts, goes thru the wizzard, and then installs -- I did turn off mcafee when installed it -- perhaps I didn't turn off all of mcafee so will try that again -- do u want me to unstill the version i have just installed since it does show on the add/remove programs list

Hi,

So the latest version does show in add/remove programs? Strange it doesn't show in your HijackThislog though - it's like it wasn't installed properly.
So yes, uninstall it and reinstall it again.
This is strange though - since it is in add/remove programs, this means that it is installed, but it should create some registry entries as well and showing in your HijackThislog, but none of them were created.
That's why I though Teatimer was interfering and blocking the keys - so not sure if you reinstalled Sun Java again also after you disabled Teatimer.

I did turn off tea timer and reset it the way u told me to and then even made sure it was still off before I downloaded and re-installed the sunjava file -- will uninstall again and then make sure mcafee and teatimer are off and then give it a shot -- what is itneresting is that when I go to the test page for jave I dont even get the little applet to even try to open and then fail -- nothing happens

what is itneresting is that when I go to the test page for jave I dont even get the little applet to even try to open and then fail
That's because, as I see from your log, the latest version is not even installed.
Also make sure you downloaded the correct version/install and not any other one, because on the download page, you can choose between many other installers.
You really had to choose for the "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1" version and not any other one.

I did download the correct version and tried it all again -- still no luck -- here is the hijackthis log -- and i get no error messages when I install it but when I click on the java icon on the control panel I get the same message I shared yest.

Your HijackThislog still doesn't show it being installed though... This is really confusing. Is it the offline version you downloaded? If you did, the installer should be called: "jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe"
This is the installer I asked you to download previously and that one should be on your desktop.
I am asking this, because in case you tried the online installer instead (which is called "jre-6u1-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe", it will also start the install wizard when you doubleclick to run it, but it will download the extra components to install from the Java website first and there it could happen that your McAfee Hackerwatch/Firewall blocks it.

So can you tell me how the installer for Java is called which is on your desktop?

Edit.. Also do next first:

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE: Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Under Browsing History, click "Delete".
Click "Delete Files", "Delete cookies" and "Delete history"
Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed): Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu..
Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
Select all and click the Clear button again.
Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Hi,

I've been doing some more research to find out what is causing this and I've found similar issues where the install went OK, even the finish screen was presented, but it wasn't properly installed.
The issue seemed to be an issue with Windows Installer, although Windows installer was registered properly (tried to re-register Windows installer again, but that didn't solve it). It was the msiexec.exe that was freezing during install and never properly finished the install, although it said finished in the installation wizard.
The user solved it by uninstalling Windows Installer 3.1, rebooted and then reinstalled Windows Installer 3.1 by using Windows update or reinstalling it from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en
Keep in mind, to reinstall Windows Installer, you really have to have a genuine version of Windows XP, otherwise you wouldn't be able to redownload the Windows installer 3.1.
Then the user was able to reinstall the Sun Java properly.

Hi,

Glad to hear. :)
I assume it was uninstalling Windows Installer and reinstalling it again that solved the issue? So you could properly install Sun Java?
