View Full Version : amaena and 89.188.16.10 popups in IE

I use Firefox as my browser, but also have IE7 installed on my PC.
Recently I started getting popups from IE7 whilst using firefox. IE7 will start automatically and generally has an address starting with 89.188.16.10 and talks about spyware or security type things. I just close the browser and remove the messages.

This has now progressed to launchinga new tab in firefox on some occasions as well.

I found good advice at http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=13108 which I followed as it appeared to be the same problem that I have. The computer still runs quite slowly at startup (firefox takes forever to launch) just after the initial boot, but then launches instantly once I've been booted for a few minutes).

The fix from the thread that I used has resulted in the following error at bootup though:

"unable to find c:\windows\system32\sktiscbk.dll" The file is correct, but the wording may be slightly different for the message. I just click okay as my desktop is laready showing when this message appears.

Is anyone able to provide help? I am guessing I'll need ot supply various logs from Hijack This etc, but I'll await confirmation of what is required first.

thanks
John

G'Day and welcome to Safer Networking, if you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, it appears you have missed some important instructions our administrator has posted at the top of the forum, especially this: "BEFORE you POST" (READ this Procedure before Requesting Assistance)
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=288
All advice given is taken at your own risk.
Please read and follow all instructions and post all required logs or reports, anything less will slow your process.
Use "Post Reply" to post the information in the instructions and stay in the same topic.

Hello John, since you provided limited information, if you have not resolved your issues and want some good advice, it would be to start with the posted instructions above. Vundo is probably the infection and it can tough to remove.

Cheers...Phil

Phil,

Thanks for the quick reply. My apologies for not following the sticky first up. I have read and actioned the sticky now.

My results are as follows:

Spybot produced 54 entries that it removed (and was run in safe mode after the online scan).

Online scan results using Virus Scanner CA:

Since my initial request for assistance over the weekend, Norton internt security also picked up a Vundo virus and has also been blocking af ew other things this morning, which I am guessing are all related to whatever infection I have.

Hope this information is enough to get you started. IF you need anything further please let me know.

regards
John

Hi John, thanks for returning you information, you have not mentioned running any tools and I can see markers for this infection:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B9468BF2-4250-4DFD-BA74-2396DEE1E11E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayx.dll (file missing)
This is Vundo but the file missing makes me think a program you might have run removed some of the infection? I also see this item:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sktiscbx.dll",realset
which comes with Vundo, but I have found it is best that the infection is removed before removing that one or the junk seems to morph and return. Telling you all of this so you will understand I wish to collect some information first.

1) Let's look at the CA scan first, looks like an infected Java cache, give these instructions a try:
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virusproblem/howtoclean/cleanjavacache.shtml

2) See this: http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=12880&postcount=2
For some reason, and it is unusual, I see no Java program running in that HJT log. Would you check to make sure you have the newest version of Java and then uninsall any old versions in Add Remove programs.

3) Hackers know we use HJT and have learned to hide the infection, please return here: C:\hijackthis\HijackThis1991.exe <<< rename HJT.exe, call it johnbdrysdale.exe or whatever you wish. Then restart the computer, create and post a new HJT log. If the infection is there, we will see it in the BHO 02 and 020 Winlogon areas of the new HJT log. I will repond as soon as posible after you post.

Thanks

Phil,

I followed each step in your last post (cleared JAva cache, reinstalled Java after removing old version etc) and have renamed the Hijack this file. The report is below.

In relation to the 2 dll files that you have put in red I recall the dday.dll being one that I removed when I followed the instructions you had provided someone in another thread (which I referred to in my initial post in this thread), and I also removed sktiscbx.dll amongst others. I know have an error window pop up when windows is booting though about this sktiscbx.dll file being missing. I click "OK" and the system finsihes booting, but would be good to be able to stop the error message and ensure the system is running as it is inteneded to.

thanks
John

Thanks John for returning your information and the feedback. That item is part of Vundo that the hackers started using assuming we would not figure out it did not belong there. So you know exactly what you need to remove:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sktiscbx.dll",realset

Let's do a little cleaning as we remove it:

How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(unless you set IE this way on purpose)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B9468BF2-4250-4DFD-BA74-2396DEE1E11E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayx.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [setup] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sktiscbx.dll",realset

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sktiscbx.dll <<< delete that file

(if you have any problems deleting it, use this tool)
How to use the Delete on Reboot tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#delreb

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and create a new HJT log and look to make sure that junk is gone, then post a log for a last look.

I suggest you run CA again and make sure it is scanning clean.

Thanks...Phil

Okay,

I've followed your intructions but the CA scan is still showing items again.

Thanks John, the HJT log looks good, let's clean System Restore:
System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:

Let me post this information for you now:

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If you want to run another scan to make sure nothing is hiding, use this one. Delete or quarantine anything it finds and post the scan results for me to view.
http://forums.security-central.us/showthread.php?t=3165
If the computer is running fine, then save that scan for when you need it if you wish.

Now lets look at this stuff, you will have to delete the stuff manually. I can not see where it is of value since it in C:\Backups. I can not tell from here what program the backups exists in. You should be able to tell from there though.
Navigate to C:\Backup\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\file\ the folder in red and delete the stuff. As far as I can see they are all in the same C:Backups\ folder. I would like to know what they are if you you would let me know.

Thanks...pskelley
