Smitfraud-C.Toolbar888 & friends

I caught the smitfraud-c bug sometime this week, and a bunch of other nasty malware like MediaPlex, Winsoft, Spyware Doctor, etc. that are making my computer virtually useless.

I ran Norton Internet Security, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, and did an online Panda Activescan. Panda found and cleaned 3 viruses, but was unable to clean a few bits of spyware that it found.

After these failed to clean my computer up, I found the smitRem tool on BleepingComputer.com and ran that, but it doesn't seem to have helped either.

Since I posted last, Norton has sent me a message that Vundo has been resolved. Hopefully that's true, but I've still got plenty of popups and trojans slowing everything down.

Thanks for returning your information, you are still infected with the Vundo trojan, and you have another one also:

Since Vundo does not update and Atribune is constantly adding new files for it to remove, please delete the copy you have onboard and download it fresh from the link I provide. Read the instructions and follow them carefully, if you have problems deleting any Vundo file, please upload it so it can be added to the fix. I will show you the files I see in the log, there will probably be more hidden.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Please download VundoFix.exe (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4) to your desktop
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThislogin a reply to this thread.Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Please understand these hackers can call there junk anything they wish. Vundofix may not know the files at first, but it will learn. You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted"

Here are the Vundo files you have not remove yet:

I posted these for you so you could watch them? Since they were not removed, I must assume you have uploaded them to be added to the fix according to the directions...correct?

Run the fix again, at least twice, watch the 020 items in the log. If they do not indicate they "have been deleted" then do this:

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
* You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
* When VundoFix re-opens,Click Scan for Vundo button.
* Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
* Copy&Paste the 2 entries below into the top 2 boxes

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturq.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayvtqr.dll

* Click Add Files and Click Close Window
* Click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.

Start Hijackthis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the button labeled Delete a file on reboot...
A new window will open asking you to select the file that you would like to delete on reboot. Navigate to the file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32winpdc32.dll and click on it once, and then click on the Open button.
You will now be asked if you would like to reboot your computer to delete the file. Click on the Yes button if you would like to reboot now.

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

I removed all versions of Java runtime env. on my computer using Add/Remove programs except for Java SE runtime environment 6 update 1. Is this not the most current version?

I'm looking through my programs list right now, and I don't see version 1.4.2.3. Should I just remove the version 6u1 that's in my list and just re-install from the Sun website?

It doesn't look like VundoFix is finding the two O20 vundo files in my log:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayvtqr.dll

I'll add these two to the VundoFix hitlist, but should I add C:\WINDOWS\system32\vturq.dll as well? Is "mljgf" the same thing as "vturq" with a different name?

Also, I don't see an option to "Run VundoFix as a task." Am I missing something right under my nose?

Did I tell you this one was tough to remove? How would you like to get hold of these guys? First questions:

To remove this: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32winpdc32.dll
That tool works on those files which are not Vundo well and I can not understand why it is still in the HJT log. If you try a proceedure like the one I posted and it does not work, please communicate that fact to me. Tell me why it failed, if you do not communicate that I do not know if you followed the instructions or not.

I will have to download the fix to my computer and see what I get, all I can say is that I post that proceedure very often with no problems.

You are well aware not that if the junk does not get removed it morphs and changes names. What I would like you to do is try the fix this morning, watch closely at the 020 items in the HJT log, these are the ones that the fix must kill:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayvtqr.dll
This one >>> C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll the Delete on Reboot tool should remove.
don't concern yourself with the other two 020 items, they are valid.

Remember you must delete the old copy and download a new one, the fix does not have an updater, and only the new copy will contain the .dlls you uploaded.

If the fix does not work, then we will try a new tool, but only after you try Vundofix...thanks

Try these instructions if Vundofix fails to remove the junk:

* Save it to the Desktop
* Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
* Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the Desktop
* Follow the directions as indicated

This program may generate a "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH" which is an expected/necessary part of the process.
Do not be concerned.
Just reboot if your system "jams".

To confirm successful deletion, and determine if there are any additional problems, please post the VirtumundoBeGone log VBG.txt. It is found on the Desktop.

I will need a new HJT log also.

I followed the instructions up to the point where I'm supposed to "Run VundoFix as a Task" and add the two O20 Vundo files to the listbox.

As I mentioned, the version of VundoFix that I downloaded (v6.3.23) doesn't seem to have a checkbox option to run it as a task. And I'm pretty certain that this is the only version of VundoFix that I've ever loaded on my computer.

I'll go ahead and add these two files to the VundoFix listbox:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yayvtqr.dll

despite the fact that I can't run Vundo as a task, and once that's done, I'll give the Delete on Reboot Tool a shot.

Thanks for the feedback, I just downloaded Vundofix V6.4.1 and I see only two choices, Scan for Vundo and Remove Vundo. Changes must have been made in the interface of the newer versions. Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, the point your mouse to the white box above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the next window opens, copy and past the files into the boxes and click on Add File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

After adding the two vundo files to the list of files to be removed, the VundoFix log shows that the first file, "mljgf" was deleted, but the second file, "yayvtqr" could not be deleted. However, after running HJT, it looks like "yayvtqr" is gone, and the first file has again changed names to "pmnno."

Has "yayvtqr" really been removed, or is it somehow hiding somewhere else?

Trying VirtumundoBeGone to see if it can get rid of "pmnno" now...

It looks like there's still one vundo file in the O20 section the VirtumundoBeGone couldn't remove:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllml.dll

Any other ideas to get rid of this thing? I'm trying Delete on Reboot now to get rid of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll.

once you have completed the instructions to use the Delete on reboot tools on this file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll
and allowed the computer to reboot, then do this:

Now delete your copy of Vundofix, it does NOT update itself and we must download it fresh to get the newest updates. Once you have it onboard, then do this.

Open Vundofix by Doubleclicking on it, the point your mouse to the white box
above the buttons and right click, then click on Add More Files. When the
next window opens, copy and past these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\yayvtqr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllml.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fifybbse.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winpdc32.dll
<<< if delete on reboot removes this one you do not need to add it, in the log it would say (file missing)

into the box and click on Add
File(s), then click on Close Window. Then click Remove Vundo.

Hmmm... I'm not seeing any Vundo files in my O20's other than "winpdc32." Since I last posted, Norton has popped up a few times telling me that Trojan.vundo has been blocked.

Is my computer starting to heal itself? I obviously still have a ton of problems, since whenever I turn on my computer I get the message from IE that I'm currently working offline, and the only times in the past two years IE has been open is when Vundo was hijacking it to pop up ads. There haven't been any ads lately, just my computer running really slowly and Norton telling me that I still have Vundo.

3) Run ATF Cleaner

I've been using my computer for about two weeks now without any of the vundo symptoms that I had earlier.

I was actually just getting ready to delete this bookmark since everything seemed okay, and just read your reply. I fixed the missing vundo files with HJT, and ran ATF Cleaner.

Thanks for posting that last log for a check and it looks fine. You may keep ATF-Cleaner if you wish but remove all of the others tools we downloaded for the cleanup. I suggest you follow these instruction to clean the System Restore files. System Restore does not know the good files from the bad. In case bad stuff has gotten into your System Restore files, follow the instructions in this link to get clean System Restore files. Turn it off, reboot then turn it back on:
