Hello!

Description:
Last week our browser began displaying numerous separate popup windows. A few of the domains were: rond.starsdoor.com, traveltribe.com, sportskids.com, bid4prizes.com. The virus scanner eventually found "ZQest" and deleted it. After that, dialog boxes popped up saying that func.js and vttc.exe could not be found and threre were no more pop up windows. Using Adaware and Spybot in Safe Mode removed the visible offenders, but the malware programs were reinstalled with each restart of windows. Presistent offenders were Adspy.ttc and Zqest.K8l.

Following the hijackthis log is a list of removal measures tried and results or logs.

The system appeared to operate corrently after running BitDefender. The system is not exhibiting any unusual behavior now, but it is still mostly off the network and not in use. Since each scanner found different and additional problems, I have no confidence that this system is safe to use. I would greatly appreciate a review of the hijackthis log.

I hope I have presented this post appropriately.

TIA,
Lynn

Hello and welcome to the Forums :)

Let's get you cleaned.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...

Disable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
Open Windows Defender
Click on "Tools"
Click on "General Settings"
Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
Click "Save"
Exit the program.

Disable Spybot S&D Teatimer.
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list
Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
Restart your computer

Open AVG Anti-Spyware
On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/).
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Download ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your desktop.
Do NOT run yet.

==================

Disable the bad service
Start
Run
Type services.msc to the field and press enter.
A window opens, scroll down to EBCKXUAS
Rightclick it and choose Stop
Then choose Properties
Set Startup to Disabled
Click Apply and OK.

Then, open HijackThis.
Open the Misc Tools section
Delete an NT service
Copy the following line to the box and press OK; EBCKXUAS
Answer Yes
Close HIjackThis

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list. Fix the O6 entry too if you haven't locked Internet Explorer settings on purpose.

Thank you many times over, Mr_JAk3, for helping me with this cleanup. I was very discouraged at finding the first problems in spite of having what I thought was a pretty secure system and was pretty much resigned to reformating and re-installing the system.

The AVG Anti-Sypware scan did not find any problems. Below are that log and a fresh HiJackThisLog.

Here are the logs after the HiJackThis cleanup in Safe Mode.

The computer had been turned off after the first set of clean up instructions and then restarted to log on and copy the instructions (I knew there was a response by checking from another computer.) Note that the computer would not shutdown or restart on command at this point to restart in Safe Mode. I had to manually turn it off and restart.

The Kaspersky log included a very large number of skipped files. The log is a total of 2123 lines, too long to post here. I'll post just the statistics and the infected file lines. Please let me know if I should run the Kaspersky scan differently to eliminate the skipped files.

Hello :)

HijackThis log looks good. Kaspersky found only infected emails from backups, you should do some cleaning there if possible...

How is the computer running now?

Hello again

The computer seems to be running ok except that it intermittently won't shut down on command or log off a user. This happened a few times before we made the changes suggested but after I installed new protection software and uninstalled unused programs. It is still happening. I am currently troubleshooting this problem. Too many changes at once. The computer still hasn't gotten much use since I haven't solved this additional problem.

Thanks again for your help.

I ran HiJackThis again as part of my troubleshooting. Here is the new log. Some of the entries I removed in the first pass have returned.

Hi again, we'll continue :)

Some leftovers...

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Restart your computer to the safe mode:
Restart your computer
Start tapping the F8 key when the computer restarts.
When the start menu opens, choose Safe mode
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Run HijackThis, click Do a system scan only, and check the box next to each of these entries if still present. Close all other windows and press Fix checked. If something isn't there, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Hello again.

The computer seems to be running fine. I re-enabled TeaTimer and Anti-Spyware. Did I jump the gun here? The HiJackThis logs report the items I deleted. Also the logs are different depending upon which user account I logged into. Here are the most recent logs.

Hi again, we'll try again. :)

Some leftovers still came back...

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...

Disable AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
Open AVG Anti-Spyware
Click Shield
Click under "resident shield is"
Change it to inactive
Close the program

Disable Spybot S&D Teatimer.
Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
On the left hand side, click on Tools
Then click on the Resident icon in the list

Ok now you can ebale the realtime protections but you must allow all the changes they warn about.

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Clear your system restore (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/mcgill1.mspx)
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.

Use ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1)
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.

Use Ad-Aware (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/?showtutorial=48)
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.

Use AVG Anti-Spyware (http://www.ewido.net/en/)

Install MVPS Hosts file (http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.

Keep your antivirus (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53) and firewall (http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=56#56) up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with you antivirus software.

Read this article by TonyKlein (http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=279)
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stand Up and Be Counted ! (http://www.malwarecomplaints.info/index.php)
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)
