sysprot32.exe - A stubborn piece of malware

Hello all,

For the past few weeks I've noticed a process called Sysprot32.exe snooping around my computer. Obviously I jumped on it assuming it was a trojan or rootkit but to no avail I can't remove that darn bugger. I've tried so many things, in and out of safe modes. Avast, Spybot S&D, Adaware, AVG Antivirus, AVG Antispyware and AVG rootkit. None of it has worked and I usually do a pretty good job at taking care of pests like these. But at any rate, here is my hijack this log.

Appears, since I see no required online scan, that you missed those instructions. You can wait on the online scan to see if we need it, but please read and follow the directions.

1) You are running two antivirus programs at the same time and this is not a good thing. They conflict with each other and you will be less safe than if you ran one good program and maintained it properly. Uninstall one, update the one you keep and run a complete system scan, post for me any item that can't be removed, the complete name and pathway.

3) Did you install this program: C:\Program Files\RocketDock\RocketDock.exe

4) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

5) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

6) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune

Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

7) AVG Anti-Spyware: Deactivate the Resident Shield
- Before proceeding, deactivate the "Resident Shield" as this may prevent changes to the registry.
- To do this, click "Change State" to the right of the Resident Shield option in the main window.
- You will clearly see the status change to Inactive if you have done this correctly.

9) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

9) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysprot32.exe <<< delete that file

10) Make sure you are updated, then run this program according to the instructions in the link, delete or quarantine anything it finds and save the scan report to post.

11) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Restart the computer and post any information I requested, the uninstall list, the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help.

Thank you for replying.

Before I begin responding to each of your steps something new came up when I booted up my computer this morning. An error message as well as a cmd prompt came up and told me that NTVDM had tried to perform an illegal command and failed. It mentioned winbo32.exe, so I googled it and found that it was bad stuff too. Hopefully that will be dealt with during the sysprot32.exe purge.

Ok, moving on.

This is all the logs BEFORE I followed your steps. I will post an AFTER log of the things you requested again after I follow your steps.

1) I'm not running the norton antivirus, I think it just says I am. The deal there is I installed some programs from the norton CD to help me do maintenance on my computer. Programs such as Speed disk and Windows Repair were installed, but not that antivirus.

The internet filter on this computer named Bsafe might been made apparent by the hijack log but that antivirus program is also not being used. The only Antivirus programs running right now is AVG.

2) ijji.org was unable to queue my search but I used http://www.virustotal.com instead. It's results are as followed:

Make sure you followed the directions and deleted or quarantined all items, and did not "not action taken" that being the case you may edit out all cookies, I don't need to see then.

I do need that HJT log though and you can uninstall the out of date version of Java: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11

I don't see the sysprot32.exe process running in my task manager anymore but I'm still concerned about registry entries and such. Also, sometimes it doesn't show up for a while in my task manager. I'm not to sure what prompts it so show up when it does. I'm keeping an eye on it though.

Do you know what was up with that NTVDM illegal command thing though (winbo32.exe)? And should I be concerned about the other virus's virustotal.com found, or are those just the names of the virus's sysprot32.exe is a product of?

Restart the computer and post any information I requested, the uninstall list, the scan report from AVG Anti-Spyware and a new HJT log. Please add any comments you think will help.That is the only information I need to see.

You HJT log looks to be clean of malware, post that AVG scan please, if you can't post it in one posting, split it to two or more.

The online scan it just telling you the different names different AV's call the item. Seems they can't get together and all call it the same?
