SpybotSD tells me this is what I am infected with. Here is what I have done so far before I get to the log:

I ran an online scan in IE, I forgot the name of it and it did not provide a log, however, this was several days ago and it did not pick up anything other than cookies.

I ran Ad-Aware SE Personal which found two things, bantool and Surfsidekick. Those seemed to have been removed. I have some logs that can be provided as necessary.

I have been getting pop ups through all of this and until running HijackThis my Internet Explorer stopped opening. The pop-ups ran in Firefox during that time.

Spybot is the only tool I used that found the Smitfraud infection and is not able to remove it. I'm now here to eliminate the problems step by step with you guys. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Hi,

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software and a Firewall. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install them first!!

Avira (http://www.free-av.com/), AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/) OR Active Virus Shield (http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp) (uncheck the Security Toolbar during install) are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Comodo (http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/) OR Kerio (http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm) are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=60)

Reboot your computer afterwards.
After reboot, perform a full scan with your Antivirus and let it remove anything it is finding. It may be better to perform the scan in Windows Safe mode.
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Then reboot once again in order to delete files that were in use previously.

Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply - then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Upon rebooting Internet Explorer is unusable again. So part of what is still active is the cause for that.

Now I have AVG and Comodo installed and running.

I went into Safe Mode and I ran Spybot and it found the Smitfraud infection. I was able to clean all of it, two .sys files and two registry entries.

An AVG scan picked up zero threats scanning the whole computer.

I suspected the .dll file at the top of this list is the new culprit but I have not taken any further action.

Hello,

Let's deal with the rest now...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {09c44f0f-9487-449a-808f-c064e3063dd9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\phjlt.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [runner1] C:\WINDOWS\retadpu1000106.exe 61A847B5BBF72813329B385772FF01F0B3E35B6638993F4661AA4EBD86D67C56389B284534F310
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.drivecleaner.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.errorprotector.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imageservr.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.imagesrvr.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.systemdoctor.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.winantivirus.com (HKLM)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

* Download Combofix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Hello,

This is looking much better :)

Just some leftovers we have to delete...

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Please hide your hidden files and folders afterwards again, when we are done with this thread and your problems are solved, because above instructions to set your system to show all files, unhide legit files and folders as well.
And I don't want you to delete them because they may look suspicious. To hide them again, just perform the above instructions in the opposite way.

Delete next file and folder:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\phjlt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SBO <== folder

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java: Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).
Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs: Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hostwl.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

I deleted the file and the folder successfully.

I got the latest version of Java installed.

However, when I tried visiting http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html, the page could not be found. Is it a typo or perhaps an outdated link?

Hi,

Yes, it looks like Virustotal is indeed down. It's no typo, because the main site is down as well: http://www.virustotal.com
Try this site instead: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Then copy the contents of the results and paste them in your next reply.

It's not widely detected, but certainly malware... so I want a sample of it. To do this, Go to this page (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=8).
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to it and browse to next file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hostwl.exe

Select it and click ok:
Then click the Send File button below.

Then delete the C:\WINDOWS\system32\hostwl.exe

Post a new HijackThislog in your next reply to have a final check :)

I haven't got any pop-ups and my Internet Explorer works. The symptoms I've noticed seem to be clear.

Are there any other final steps?

miekiemoes
2007-05-25, 09:51
Good to hear. :)

Next step is actually the most important step - make sure this won't happen anymore. :) So please read my Prevention page (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html) with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here (http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html).

Happy Surfing again!

Thanks for all the speedy help! I should of came here sooner! If I couldn't get rid of this thing I was gonna reformat my computer. I normally don't have problems with stuff like this but this was a nasty one for only a mildly experienced person like myself. I know where to turn or send people I know if they need help, and I may look into making a small donation to the site! Take care!
